Let's Talk in English.
Hey, everyone, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Gabe.
And my name is Andrea.
Now yesterday we talked about the bathroom.
Two days ago we talked about the living room.
And today we are talking about another very important room in your home.
Which room do you think I am talking about?
If you are thinking about the kitchen, then you are right.
The title of our lesson today is The Kitchen.
Now what are some things that are in your kitchen?
Can you think of the names in English?
Do you have a freezer?
Do you have an oven?
Do you have a microwave?
Do you have pots and pans?
Well, these are all things that you can find in your kitchen.
And they are also key words.
So please open your Let's Talk in English magazine, find today's lesson, and
let's begin with Conversation A.
Hey, Lily, I heard you need some things for your new apartment.
I have everything I need.
But I still want a few more things.
Like what?
I have a small fridge, but I want a big fridge with a freezer.
I understand.
I have a stove and an oven, but I also want a microwave.
You don't have a microwave?
How do you cook?
Slowly.
Well, now Lily understands the difference between "need" and "want." She says,
"I have everything I need.
But I still want a few more things." Well, Ken wants to know what kind of
things.
So he says, "Like what?" Lily says she has a small fridge.
She needs a fridge.
But she wants a big fridge with a freezer.
And I think that we want to look at this key word together, right?
The key word is "freezer." Now if you use a freezer, is the food hot or cold in
the freezer, Gabe?
The food is cold.
It's really, really, really cold in a freezer.
It keeps it fresh.
That's right. It keeps the food fresh and cold.
When food is in a freezer, it is very hard.
It is frozen and very cold.
Now sometimes you can have a small freezer that is part of your fridge.
Maybe the top of your fridge is a freezer, or the bottom of your fridge is a
freezer.
But some people have big freezers that kind of look like a big box in their
kitchen or in a different part of their house.
And I have too much stuff in my freezer.
Sometimes if you put things in the freezer, you might forget that you have them.
So make sure to check what you have in your freezer from time to time.
Otherwise, you have too much stuff in your freezer, or refrigerator.
That is true.
Well, Lily wants a big fridge with a freezer.
She has a stove.
But she wants an oven.
Let's talk about this key word.
oven.
Now you use an oven to bake things.
An oven is usually uh, part of a stove.
Maybe you have the stove on top, and then the oven at the bottom.
It looks like a big box.
You open the door and you put things inside.
You usually bake things in an oven.
And there's another kind of oven.
It's called a "microwave oven," or just a "microwave." That's our key word.
A microwave will heat food up very, very quickly.
It makes it hot.
And you don't have to wait very long.
So how do you cook?
Do you use a stove?
Do you use an oven or a microwave?
Well, let's continue learning with Conversation B.
I remember when I first moved into my apartment.
For the longest time, I only had one pot.
You didn't have any pans?
No. I cooked everything in one pot.
I even used that pot in my microwave.
Wasn't it a metal pot?
Yes.
Oh, no!
Oh, yes! I had to buy a new microwave!
Attention, everybody! Attention! Attention!
Gabe, Gabe, Gabe.
Why are you making so much noise?
And why do you have a pot and a pan?
Well, I have a pot and a pan to make noise because I'm trying to get everyone's
attention so that we can talk about these key words.
I see. OK, I... I understand now.
And "pot" and "pan" are both key words in Conversation B.
That's right.
Let's talk about this one in my left hand.
This is a kind of pan.
And it's something that you can use to cook food.
You put a pan on top of a stove.
And you light a fire, and then you can cook food in your pan.
Now what kind of food do you cook in a pan?
Well, you might cook eggs in a pan.
If you want to fry some vegetables, like some potatoes, you can fry them in a
pan.
So pan is an important part of your kitchen.
But sometimes you might also need to use a pot when you are cooking.
And it's a good thing I have a pot right here.
A pot is a little deeper than a pan.
You can use a pot to cook things in water.
You can put water inside of a pot, and cook on top of the stove.
I like to cook soup in a pot because I can put many different things in there:
water and vegetables and meat and... and more to cook soup.
So pots and pans are both important for cooking.
Now you can put a pot and a pan on an oven... or, sorry, in an oven or on a
stove.
But can you put them in the microwave?
Oh... Oh, no. Oh, no.
You should not put your pots or pans in the microwave because pots and pans are
usually made out of metal.
This is our last key word.
If something is metal, it's not plastic or wood or paper or glass.
It's like a can. It's... it's metal, like a pot or a pan.
That's right.
Now this word "metal" is spelled M-E-T-A-L.
But when we say the word, we usualy don't say the T.
The T kind of turns into a D.
We say the pot is metal.
But of course, you spell it with a T.
It's one of those fun English words to remember.
Of course, if you would like some tea, I have a teapot right here.
And it is made of metal.
Well anyway, friends, we have a lot more to learn.
And we're going to see our key words again in our Read It paragraph.
For many people, the kitchen is their favorite room in the house.
Why? That's where the food is!
Not everyone likes to cook, but everyone likes to eat!
What is in your kitchen?
Most kitchens have a refrigerator and freezer.
They also might have a stove, an oven or a microwave and metal pots and pans for
cooking food.
For many people, the kitchen is their favorite room in the house.
Now this is a statement.
Then our Read It continues with "Why?" What is the reason?
Well, our Read It says: That's where the food is!
So when you share a statement like that - For many people, summer is their
favorite holiday.
Why? Because it's hot outside.
This is a good way to start a reading paragraph or to start a paragraph when you
are writing.
Now let's review today's key words together.
And the first one is: freezer.
You can put the meat in the freezer.
You can leave it there a long time.
oven.
Grandma will bake the cake in the oven.
microwave.
The food will cook quickly in the microwave.
pot.
Cook the noodles in a pot on the stove.
pan.
You can stir-fry the vegetables in this pan.
metal.
metal.
Many things are made of metal.
And we will learn many things with Christina.
(Chinese).
