Let's Talk...
In English.
I'm Andrea.
And we're glad you joined us today.
I'm Gabe.
And here we are at LTE TV.
Now let's see. What are we talking about today?
It's a very interesting lesson about a room in your house or apartment or office
- the bathroom.
That's right. Everybody needs the bathroom.
Now let's see.
What kinds of things are in the bathroom?
Well, I can think of a toilet.
That is very important.
Andrea, what else is in the bathroom?
Uh, you can also have a bathtub in a bathroom.
What else, Gabe?
Let's see... A bathroom should have a sink.
And maybe above the sink is your mirror.
And some bathrooms have a shower.
You might have a bathtub and a shower, or just a bathtub or a shower.
That's right.
So let's see.
We have toilet, a bathtub, a sink, a mirror, a shower, and of course... of
course, there is a floor.
Well friends, we have a lot of key words to talk about today.
Let's learn about the bathroom.
And let's learn how to talk about the bathroom in English.
Right now let's go to Conversation A.
Really? That much?
OK, I understand.
Thanks, Stan. Bye.
Who is Stan?
He's fixing my bathroom.
It's going to be expensive.
That's too bad.
What's wrong with your bathroom?
Some water was coming out of the toilet and getting under the floor.
Under the floor?
That's not good.
No. Stan will take out the old floor and put in a new tile floor.
Susie asks Rob a question.
She says, "What's wrong with your bathroom?" Rob's bathroom has a problem.
Susie wants to know more about it.
So what's wrong with your bathroom?
Well, let's use this question in some other ways.
What's wrong with your computer?
What's wrong with your cell phone?
What's wrong with your hand?
What's wrong with your television?
It doesn't work.
What's wrong with this thing in your kitchen?
I can't use it.
What's wrong with something?
Well, what's wrong with Rob's bathroom?
We find out that some water was coming out of the toilet and getting under the
floor.
Well, that is a big problem.
But we do want to look at our key words in that sentence.
And the first one is "toilet." Now your toilet is a very important part of your
bathroom.
We all use a toilet every day... probably several times a day.
And a toilet is something that we need.
That's right.
If I drink a whole lot of water, then I will go to use the toilet many times a
day.
Now something that you can use with this word is the word "flush," F-L-U-S-H.
After you use a toilet, you should flush the toilet.
That means everything in the toilet goes down.
It goes away.
You flush the toilet.
Yes. So you need a toilet.
But of course, you don't need to have water coming out of the toilet and getting
under the floor.
Let's talk about this key word.
floor.
Now when you walk into your bathroom, what you are standing on is the bathroom
floor.
There are floors in different buildings.
That's right.
You can talk about the floor.
It's kind of like the ground.
Now the ground is anything outside.
But the floor is anything that you step on that is inside your house or
apartment or a building.
The building floor.
Yes. And of course, you want to keep your floor clean.
If there's water on your floor, make sure you clean it up.
Well, make sure you listen now as we continue with Conversation B.
Are tile floors expensive?
No, but I'm also getting a news sink, mirror, bathtub, and shower too.
Those things are expensive.
Why are you getting all those things?
Mine are really old.
So when Stan puts in the new floor, he can put in other new things too.
You're getting a whole new bathroom!
That will be expensive!
Well, Rob is going to get some pretty expensive things for his bathroom.
What will he get?
He will get a sink, a mirror, a bathtub, and shower too.
And what's great is that those are four key words we will talk about.
A sink is something that you can use to wash your hands.
You can wash your hands or even wash your face with the water from the sink.
And of course, you will find a sink in your bathroom.
Can you think of another room in the place where you live that has a sink?
Well, your kitchen probably also has a sink.
You can wash your dishes and wash food in the sink.
So that is a sink.
And a sink can be expensive.
Something else that might be expensive is a mirror.
A mirror is something that you can use to look at yourself.
You can make sure that your hair looks OK, make sure that your face is clean.
You can use a mirror to look at different things.
And a sink usually has a mirror above it.
So if you are brushing your teeth, using the water from the sink, you can look
at yourself in the mirror to make sure all your teeth are clean.
That's right.
Well, what else is in the bathroom?
Maybe you have a bathtub.
This is something that you can take a bath in.
You can wash yourself and get clean in a bathtub.
Now not every bathroom has a bathtub.
Sometimes there's just a shower.
What's a shower, Andrea?
Well, a shower is like a bathtub.
It's a place where you wash your body.
But you stand in a shower, and water comes over your head and down the rest of
your body.
So you stand in a shower, and you sit or even lie down in a bathtub.
And if you do have a bathtub, sometimes it is nice just to relax in hot water in
the bathtub.
Well, all of these things can be kind of expensive.
That's what Rob says.
Those things are expensive.
That's a good phrase to know.
Something is expensive, or some things are expensive.
The meal I had yesterday was expensive.
Those shoes are very nice.
But they are expensive.
Well, right now it's time for us to continue.
Listen again for these key words in our Read It paragraph.
Everyone uses the bathroom in a house.
Bathrooms usually have a toilet, a sink and a mirror.
After you use the toilet, you should wash your hands in the sink.
Many bathrooms also have a bathtub or shower.
Do you usually take a bath or a shower?
Bathrooms often have a tile floor, so they are easy to clean.
Bathroom floors may be easy to clean if they are tile.
But you should still be careful.
Bathrooms are the most dangerous rooms in the house, probably because lots of
things get wet.
One time when my brother was very young, he wanted to see himself in the mirror.
So he climbed up on top of the sink.
And he slipped and fell and hurt himself.
On his face, you can still see where he got cut.
So it's very dangerous if you're not being careful in the bathroom.
So the bathroom is the most dangerous room in any house.
Be careful when you are using the sink or mirrors or bathtub or taking a shower.
Don't slip and fall.
Right now it's time for us to review our key words.
The first one is...
toilet.
toilet.
This toilet isn't working.
Use the one in the other bathroom.
floor.

Don't sit on the floor. It's dirty.

We have a shower in this bathroom.
Well, right now it's time for us to learn something with Christina.
