Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Andrea.
And my name is Gabe.
And I have a great idea for us.
Let's Go Camping!
Have you ever been camping?
Have you ever wanted to get away from your home, get away from the city, and
just go with some friends into the mountains to go and hike?
You can take your big backpack.
You can go and camp somewhere in the country or in the mountains.
You don't have any electricity.
Maybe you just bring a small little gas stove.
And you can enjoy the great outdoors when you go camping.
But camping, hike, backpack, camp, electricity and stove?
What do these words mean?
Today you will find out.
Right now let's get started by opening up our magazines and go into Conversation
A.
Ken, I heard you're going camping this weekend.
Is that true?
It is.
I'm going with some friends from my church.
Fun. Where will you go?
We're going to hike into the mountains.
So everyone will carry backpacks?
That's right.
We'll carry all our food, clothes, tents and sleeping bags.
Rob starts our conversation by saying, "I heard you're going camping this
weekend. Is that true?" Now if you learn about something,
or you hear about something that a friend is doing, and you want to know if it's
true, you can use this phrase.
I heard that you got a new guitar.
Is that true?
I heard that you are getting married.
Is that true?
I heard you're going camping this weekend.
Is that true?
Yes, it is.
And another thing that's true is a key word we need to talk about - camping.
Now when you go camping, you enjoy time outside.
Now Gabe, when you go camping, do you usually sleep in a bed?
Do I sleep in a bed?
No, you don't sleep in a bed when you go camping.
You sleep in a tent.
It's something that you can make outside on the ground.
It's like a little room.
And you can carry this tent with you after you finish when you want to continue
hiking or going somewhere else.
So you can take a tent camping with you.
And on the cover of our magazine this month, you'll see a big tent.
So when you go camping, you stay outside or you stay in a tent.
And you enjoy nature.
You can go hiking or take a hike.
Let's talk about this verb.
hike.
Now when you hike, you are outside and you are walking.
But usually you are going up a hill or taking a path that is not very easy to
walk on.
Then you are hiking.
Ken says, "We're going to hike into the mountains." He could also say, "We are
going hiking into the mountains." Going to hike, going hiking.
Going to camp, going camping.
So when you go hiking, people often carry backpacks.
Uh... Gabe, do you have a... a backpack?
Well, yes, I do.
I have a backpack I'm going to use to go camping this weekend.
Do you see my backpack?
Uh... I see your backpack, Gabe.
But that is not the kind of backpack that you use when you go camping.
You need a backpack that is strong and has lots of room for all your things,
like my backpack.
Oh. Well, hey, you... you do have a nice backpack.
Yes, you can fit many more things in there than I can fit in here.
Yes, it's true. If you are going camping, you need to take a bigger backpack
with you so you can put lots of stuff inside.
That's right.
And "backpack" is also a key word today.
Well friends, we have more to learn and more to talk about.
So let's continue with Conversation B.
That sounds like a lot of work.
Yes, but it's fun!
I love cooking over a fire and sleeping in a tent.
I like to camp in a place with electricity and running water.
Not me!
It's also nice to use a stove for cooking.
Cooking on a stove is easier.
But any kind of camping is fun.
You're right.
Camping is just a fun way to enjoy nature.
Enjoy your weekend, Ken!
Well, we found out that Rob likes to camp in a place with electricity and
running water.
We see two key words here: camp and electricity.
When you go to camp somewhere, that means you are going camping.
So you can use these words in the same way.
I'm going to camp in the mountains, or I'm going camping in the mountains.
Now we have another key word here.
It is "electricity." And electricity is what gives us power in a house or in a
city.
The lights are from electricity.
Yes. So every time you turn on a light, turn on your TV or your radio, then you
are using electricity.
But you also want to save electricity.
If you are not in a room, then be sure to turn off the lights or turn off all
things that use electricity.
Now usually when you camp or when you go camping, you don't have electricity.
But some places do have electricity for campers who... who like to camp with
things that they enjoy.
That's right. Well, something else I enjoy doing while camping is eating.
And sometimes people take little stoves camping with them.
"Stove" is a key word.
A stove is something that you can use to cook.
Maybe you have a stove in your kitchen.
It is something flat, and fire comes out on top.
You put a pot or a pan on the stove, and you can cook food.
Now if you have a stove in your kitchen, it's probably pretty big, and you can
cook many things on your stove.
When you're camping, you usually take a small stove, or it's even called a
camping stove.
And you can just cook a few things on your stove.
And camping is a fun way to enjoy nature.
Of course, we have a lot of fun here at Let's Talk in English.
Something else we like to do is enjoy our Read It paragraph.
That can be fun too.
When you go camping, do you choose a place with running water and electricity?
Or do you hike into the mountains and carry your things in a backpack?
People camp in different ways.
Some people cook food over a fire.
Others use a small stove.
Some people sleep in tents while others put sleeping bags on the ground!
Any way you choose, camping is a great way to enjoy nature.
Some people sleep in tents while others put sleeping bags on the ground.
Well, I did that once.
I was camping, or hiking, with some friends in Yosemite, California.
It's very beautiful.
And one night we slept under the stars.
We brought out our sleeping bags, got into the sleeping bags, and just went to
sleep looking at the beautiful sky.
There were no sounds anywhere, not even airplanes.
It was great.
I like going camping like this.
I like sleeping in tents too.
But sleeping out under the stars in a sleeping bag is very fun.
Let's review our key words right now.
camping.
The Chens go camping every summer. They like sleeping in a tent.
hike.
Jim and Bob hiked for five hours to the top of the mountain.
backpack.
Steven put his books in his backpack and went to school.
camp.
Let's camp here. We can put our tent near the stream.
electricity.
We don't have any electricity. We can't turn on the lights or air conditioner.
stove.
Mom cooks our food on the stove.
And we learn lots every day with Christina.
(Chinese).
