Well, hello, and welcome to the Saturday show of Let's Talk in English.
I am your host and TV reporter, Gabe.
I'm so glad you can make it for today.
It is a review day, which means we have a lot to review from this week.
What did we talk about this week?
Well, What's in the Newspaper?
There are many things in the newspaper.
But what is in the newspaper?
You can learn about national things or things going on in the world in the
newspaper and on the TV news.
So what's happening?
What's happening today?
We are reviewing.
And we have two more lessons.
One is called: Time Zones.
Another is about jet lag.
We have a lot to review today.
So pay attention.
Listen carefully because Ginger, a cute little monkey, will be here soon.
And we have some questions just for you.
Pay attention. Here we go.
Why do people read the newspaper?
So they can find out the news.
They can read about world events.
They can read about people in the news.
They can learn about events in their town or city.
People can read sports news in the newspaper.
They can read business or entertainment news too.
There is good news and bad news in the newspaper.
There are also interesting pictures and ads.
Hi, Susie. What are you reading?
I'm reading the entertainment news in the paper.
Is there anything interesting?
Oh, yes. There are some pictures too.
Actors do lots of interesting things.
I know. I read the entertainment news too.
Can I see the sports page?
I really like sports.
Sure. Here it is.
Thank you!
Do you read the world news too?
Yes. I read about world events.
I also read about events in our town.
I do too. I really like good news.
Me too. I like good stories about people.
Do you like business news?
Not really. It isn't very interesting.
I know. But it's important!
Not everyone gets the news from a newspaper.
Some people watch the news on TV.
Many channels have news shows.
Most news shows tell people about world and local events.
They often show video footage too.
TV news reporters go around the world to report the news.
They interview world leaders.
They cover important events.
Some news programs are talk shows.
People give their opinions about national and world events.
Did you watch the news on TV last night?
No. I didn't have time.
But I read the newspaper.
I like TV news better.
The TV news shows video footage when they report the news.
I like that too.
Which channel's news do you like best?
Our channel's, of course!
Our reporters are the best.
You're right about that!
I like to report the news in our city.
But sometime, I want to cover a national news story.
You would do a good job.
Thanks. Maybe I can do that one day.
Maybe you can cover a news story in another country.
Or interview a world leader!
No! I would be too nervous!
I might not say the right things.
That's OK. World leaders don't either!
People find the most up-to-date news online.
News stories appear almost as soon as things happen.
People like to follow news stories online because updates are posted often.
But sometimes stories are posted too fast.
They aren't always complete, and facts aren't always correct.
This is especially true for news about crime.
Newspapers and blogs post the first things they hear about the crime.
And then they have to correct the story in updates.
Hey, Carol! I'm reading a news story online.
Someone is robbing the American Bank on Third Street!
Really? A crime is happening right now?
Yes. I'll tell Susie.
She needs to go and cover the story.
Wow, that news appeared fast.
That's the great thing about the Internet.
You get news especially fast, and you can follow the stories as they happen!
I like that too.
Here's another update on the story!
What does it say?
Oh.
...The bank was not being robbed.
Some students were making a movie about robbing a bank!
So there was no crime.
No. The students just forgot to tell the police before they started.
Sometimes stories are posted too fast.
So they're not complete and the facts aren't correct.
Right.
Well, I'm glad I didn't tell Susie!
There are 24 different time zones in the world.
The time is different in each zone.
When you change time zones, you must change your watch.
Travel to a time zone east of you.
Move your watch ahead.
Travel to a time zone west of you.
Move your watch back.
You change your watch one hour for each time zone.
My watch says 5:10 p.m.
Can I call my friend in Paris now?
What time is it in Paris?
I don't know.
But I can find out on the computer.
France is east of us.
Their time zone is ahead of us.
Yes. Let's see...
Paris is seven hours ahead of us.
Then it's 12:10 a.m. in Paris.
Don't call your friend now!
I can call tomorrow morning.
It will be afternoon in Paris then.
Yes. Remember, Ken, go east and move your watch ahead.
Go west and move your watch back.
Thanks.
Los Angeles is west of us.
So it's only 3:10 p.m. there.
Right. You can call someone there now.
Who?
I don't know anyone in Los Angeles!
When you travel by plane across many time zones, you get jet lag.
You get sleepy during the day, and you can't stay asleep at night.
How can you beat jet lag?
Sleep as much as possible on the plane.
When you arrive, don't sleep until nighttime.
If you must nap, don't sleep for more than one hour.
Don't do too much on your first day.
Allow your body to ease into the new time zone.
Hello, everyone. Welcome to Let's Talk!
We have a special guest here today to talk about travel.
Let's welcome Mr. Travel.
Mr. Travel, you must travel a lot.
Yes, I do, Rob. I travel every month.
I go across many time zones!
Do you ever have jet lag?
Oh, yes. Jet lag can be very bad.
What is jet lag like?
You feel sleepy during the day.
And you wake up at night.
You can't stay asleep.
How do you beat jet lag?
I sleep a lot on the plane.
I don't stay up and watch movies or play games.
So you're not too sleepy when you arrive.
Right.
And after I arrive, I don't do much the first day.
I ease into the new time zone.
That's a good idea.
Yes. So jet lag is never a problem for me.
Hello, everyone I'm here with Ginger and...
And I'm here with jet lag.
Yes. And now it's time for...
Wait, Ginger, what did you just say?
Oops! I'm here with Gabe.
No, I think you said you're here with jet lag.
Do you have jet lag?
Did you fly to another country?
No. But I played in a lot of trees yesterday.
So I'm tired now.
Well, Ginger, that's not jet lag.
You're just really tired.
Now wake up, little monkey!
Do you have a review question for us?
Uh, sure.
How does Mr. Travel beat jet lag?
Ah, good question.
Were you listening just now?
How does Mr. Travel beat jet lag?
That's right.
He sleeps a lot on the plane.
He doesn't stay up to watch movies or play games.
Great job, everyone.
And number two.
Susie is nervous... she's very nervous about interviewing someone.
Who is she too nervous to interview?
Ginger? Uh, Ginger?
Ginger, wake up!
Susie's too nervous to interview world leaders.
OK. Well, she had the right answer.
And I'm sure you did too.
I think we should let Ginger keep sleeping.
And uh, let's take a break.
