Let's Talk...
In English.
I'm Andrea.
And I am Gabe.
And we are here with LTE TV, talking about TV news.
That is the name or the title of today's lesson.
TV News.
Do you like to watch TV?
Well, of course you do.
You're watching Let's Talk in English.
Now do you like to watch the TV news?
Do you like to learn about the news from television?
What channel do you watch?
Do you watch reports about the weather or about the things going on in your
country?
Maybe there is something happening in your country.
It's national.
What kinds of things do you like to watch on TV, or learn about from the TV
news?
Well, we have lots to learn today.
So open up your magazine and let's begin.
Not everyone gets the news from a newspaper.
Some people watch the news on TV.
Many channels have news shows.
Most news shows tell people about world and local events.
They often show video footage too.
TV news reporters go around the world to report the news.
They interview world leaders.
They cover important events.
Some news programs are talk shows.
People give their opinions about national and world events.
Not everyone gets the news from a newspaper.
Some people like to watch TV news.
That's right.
Well, what channel do you watch the news on?
"Channel" is our first key word here.
When you turn on your television, there are many channels that you can watch.
What channel do you like to watch the news on?
Well, we are glad you chose this channel...
Yes.
... because you are watching us here on Let's Talk in English.
But I like that question Gabe asked.
What is your favorite channel?
Or, what channel do you watch the most shows on?
What channel do you watch the most?
Maybe someone wants to know how they can watch Let's Talk in English.
They might ask you, "What channel is Let's Talk in English on?" Of course, you
know what to tell them.
You know which channel it is on.
Well, we have another key word here.
show.
This word is a verb.
And some channels show movies.
There are different TV shows that some channels will show.
So the word can be a verb or a noun.
The channel showed that show.
So you can say: Let's Talk in English is my favorite show.
Or, this channel shows Let's Talk in English.
Now you can use that word in two ways.
And it says that we can see some video footage.
Some channels show video footage.
What is video footage?
Well, that is anything that people catch on video.
They use a camera, and they go to different places.
That is video footage.
The things that you see on TV is video footage.
And this video footage is often used to help report the news.
The host will tell the news story, report the story, and then you can watch the
video footage.
And of course, we are here to report what this key word means.
The key word is "report." And someone called a reporter on the news will tell
you about things going on in the world or in your town.
They are reporting the news.
They're telling you what happened.
And on Let's Talk, Susie is one of our reporters.
She reports the news on the show.
You can watch the news.
And when there is somebody reporting an interesting story, you can tell people
to join you and watch.
That's right.
Now some reporters also interview people.
Andrea, what kinds of people might reporters interview?
Well, they could interview famous people, like actors and actresses.
But on the news, you might see them interview world leaders.
That's right, world leaders.
"Leader" is a key word here.
A leader is someone who leads, someone who is in charge.
They are at the top.
They tell lots of people what to do.
The boss of your company is your leader.
The teacher in your classroom is a leader.
And most countries have a leader.
The leader leads the people in that country.
Now it's not easy to be the leader of a school or of a classroom or... or of a
country.
Leaders have very tough jobs.
And they work very hard.
They do.
Well friends, we do have one more key word here.
It is "national." "National" describes anything that has to do with your country
- the country you are in.
That is national news.
How else can you use this word?
You can talk about a national holiday.
That's a holiday that your country celebrates.
Or you can talk about national food.
That's food that's famous in your country.
Or a national show.
A show that's famous in your country.
Well, of course we have a lot to learn here on Let's Talk in English.
Let's continue learning with our friend Christine.
(Chinese).
Hey, Monkey Man, why aren't you reading the newspaper?
I don't always get my news from the newspaper.
You don't?
No. Sometimes I watch the news on TV.
Does TV news cover local and world events?
Yes. TV reporters go around the world to report the news.
Do they interview world leaders?
Yes. And they show video footage too.
Maybe the TV news can interview me.
Interview you?
Yeah. I can give my opinion about national and world news.
Hmm, opinions from a monkey.
Yeah. And besides, I look great on TV.
Very fashionable.
Maybe.
OK, let's review those key words.
The first one is: channel.
channel.
I have more than one hundred channels on my TV.
show.
show.
They are showing a movie in the park on Saturday.
report.
report.
The newspaper reported that news this morning.
leader.
leader.
Who is the leader of your country?
national.
national.
Tomorrow is a national holiday. Everyone in the country celebrates.
Well, it's time for us to celebrate now because we're going to take a Commercial
Break.
