Let's Talk...
In English.
My name is Gabe.
And I am Andrea.
Thank you for choosing to join us today.
We are talking about choosing an apartment.
We are going to continue to learn how to talk about your apartment or the place
where you live.
Today we're going to learn how to talk about where you live, and what kind of
things you might have at your home.
Well, we have a lot to talk about.
And we want you to be prepared.
So please open your magazine to today's lesson.
Now do you see our Read It?
Yes, you do. Great!
So please follow and read along right now.
Are you looking for an apartment?
Decide on a few things first.
1) What area do you want to live in?
Downtown? The suburbs?
2) How big of an apartment do you want?
3) How much rent can you afford to pay each month?
4) Do you want a washing machine and dryer in the apartment?
Does the apartment building have an elevator?
Think about what is important to you, and you will make a better choice!
What area do you want to live in?
This is a good question to think about when you are looking for an apartment.
Let's talk about this key word.
area.
The area is the place where you want to live.
The area includes what is around that place.
My apartment is in a good area.
There is a park in my area, and some good shops and restaurants.
When I am thinking about choosing an apartment, I want to live in a place that
is not expensive.
I do not want to choose an expensive area.
I will choose an area that is cheaper.
I probably won't want to live downtown.
I like to live in the suburbs.
Well, let's talk about this key word that Gabe just said.
downtown.
downtown.
Now if you live downtown in a city, that means you live kind of in the middle of
the city.
Living downtown is usually expensive.
And there's usually a lot of things going on downtown.
And my apartment is not in the downtown area of my city.
I can still do things.
There are wonderful restaurants, good places to shop at.
But I don't live in the downtown area.
The rent is not too expensive.
Ah, rent is another thing that's important to think about when looking for an
apartment.
"Rent" is the money that you must pay to live in your apartment.
If you don't own the apartment, you have to pay rent usually every month.
And this word can be a verb or a noun.
You can ask, "How much is the rent?" or "How much are you renting your apartment
for?" It can be a verb or a noun.
Now you might also want to think about what the apartment has.
Does it have a washing machine or a dryer?
These are also key words.
A washing machine is a machine where you wash your clothes.
You use water to make your clothes clean.
Then you put the clothes in a dryer.
The dryer makes your clothes dry.
They go from being wet in the washing machine to being dry when you take them
out of the dryer.
So does your apartment building have a washing machine and dryer?
Do you use an elevator to get to your floor?
"Elevator" is another key word.
It's a machine that you can use to go from one floor to another.
I like to take the elevator because it's convenient.
But sometimes it is healthier just to walk up the stairs.
That's true. So if you want to take an elevator, make sure your building has one
before you rent an apartment there.
Well, we have more to learn right now.
Let's go and see Christina.
(Chinese).
Oh, I want to live in an apartment.
But monkeys live in trees.
Not this monkey.
I'm looking for an apartment.
OK. Decide on a few things first.
OK. Like what?
What area do you want to live in?
Uh, the jungle.
How big of an apartment do you want?
Very, very big!
Do you want a washer and dryer?
Oh, yes, yes, yes!
Do you want an elevator?
Yeah, sure do.
OK. How much rent can you afford?
Rent? What's rent?
The uh... money.
How much money can you pay?
Oh, I can't pay. I have no money.
Then you have no apartment.
Oh.
It's time to review today's key words.
The first one is: area.
area.
Not very many people live in this area of the city.
downtown.
downtown.
There are many restaurants and stores downtown.
rent.
rent.
How much do you pay for rent each month?
washing machine.
Or washer.
washing machine.
washer.
Mom washes our clothes in the washing machine.
dryer.
dryer.
Do you put your wet clothes in the dryer or hang them up?
elevator.
elevator.
Get on the elevator and go up to the 10th floor.
Well, you're doing a super job.
Now it's time for us to continue learning with someone else who is also very
super.
Here we go.
Oh, I dropped my bag, Harry.
Who will pick it up for me?
I'd be glad to pick it up for you.
I thought so.
And Harry, you know, my birthday is coming soon.
Yes, Mary.
It's only three months away.
Exactly.
I'm sure you want to buy something nice for me, right?
Of course I do!
What should I buy for my dear Mary?
Well, I like... I like...
Oh, Harry, I need Super Sentence Man.
Will you call him for me?
Yes, yes. Super Sentence Man!
Yes, I am Super Sentence Man.
And you need today's super sentence.
Think about what something and something.
Like this:
Think about what I want and then you will know what to buy for me.
Think about what I want and then you will know what to buy for me.
Good. Now can you think of another way to use today's super sentence?
Yes. Harry, think about what you did wrong and say "I'm sorry".
Right.
Think about what you did wrong and say "I'm sorry".
Now now, Harry.
But do you have a super sentence for me?
Mary, think about what is important to you and... and tell me.
Think about what is important to you and tell me.
Yeah, that's OK, Harry.
Now Mary, uh, say your super sentence again for Harry.
Harry, think about what I want and then you will know what to buy for me.
That was a super sentence.
Remember, a super sentence every day will make your English great.
So Mary, what... what do you want?
I'm so glad you asked.
I want a new Prima bag because this one is broken.
And a new gold necklace, and an iPad, and a beautiful new pair of shoes, and a
diamond ring, and...
