Lights.
Camera.
Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone, and welcome to the studio.
My name is Andrea.
And I am Gabe.
Today we're continuing to talk about shopping.
Our lesson is called: Saving Money at the Supermarket.
Do you like to go shopping?
Do you ever shop at supermarkets?
Well, there is a way to save money.
Maybe you could take some coupons with you.
That's a good way to save money.
What is a coupon?
That's one of our key words.
We'll talk about that word and many others in today's lesson.
So open up your magazine, find today's Read It, and let's begin.
How can you save money at the supermarket?
Make a list and don't buy anything that's not on your list.
Before you make your list, read the grocery ads.
Buy what's on sale. Use coupons.
You'll save a few cents or maybe even a few dollars.
Coupons can save you 10 to 40 percent on your whole grocery bill!
Coupons can be found in stores, in newspapers, magazines and online.
Coupons can be found in stores, in newspapers, magazines and online.
Yes, coupons can be very nice.
And they can help you when you are shopping and when you want to buy something
on sale.
"Coupon" is a key word.
Say that with me.
coupon.
Excellent.
A coupon is something that can help make something cheaper.
A coupon might have a picture with some fruits or something to buy on it.
And it says the price... the price is a little cheaper than usual.
Now you can buy many things with coupons, not just fruit.
But Andrea, I have a question for you.
Do you ever use coupons?
I use coupons a lot.
I'm always happy when I can find a coupon and use it and save money.
Andrea, I did not ask if you use coupons.
I asked if you use coupons.
Coupons?
Coupons.
Not coupons?
Not coupons.
Uh... Well, I guess I... I use them.
And I guess this is another special English word, isn't it?
I think so.
So you use coupons, and I use coupons.
Friends, this is the same word.
You can just say it in different ways.
You can use coupons.
Or you can say, "I am going to use a coupon." Coupon, coupon.
OK, moving on.
We have another key word here.
It is: cent.
A cent is part of money.
It's not a dollar.
It's part of a dollar.
In America, a dollar is one hundred cents.
So one cent is one part of one hundred.
So when you are shopping, you often find things that are $0.99 or $2.99.
It's almost $3.
But $2.99 makes it look a little cheaper.
So watch these cents when you buy something.
You might think, "Oh, it's only $2!" But actually, it's $2.99.
It's $3... or almost $3.
Those supermarkets are so smart.
Two dollars and ninety-nine cents.
Well, when you see a price now if you see one in America, practice reading it,
practice saying it in English.
Andrea, what is "2.75" when you're talking about money?
How do you say that?
Well, you say two dollars and seventy-five cents.
That's right, two dollars and seventy-five cents.
So practice using this word.
Practice talking about money in English.
We have another key word here.
It is: dollar.
A dollar is 100 cents.
So how many dollars do you have?
I don't have a lot of dollars right now.
So I want to save my dollars and save my cents.
So I'm going to use coupons.
We find out in our Read It that coupons can save you 10 to 40 percent on your
whole grocery bill.
Now that's a lot of money!
It is.
And that's a key word, the word "whole." Not just part, not half, the whole
thing.
So if you save a little bit of money everywhere, then it can save more money for
the whole bill later on.
And you can find coupons... uh, and coupons, in newspapers.
"Newspaper" is a key word.
Do you like to read the newspaper?
Some people read the newspaper in the morning.
Some people read the newspaper in the afternoon.
Some people don't like to read newspapers.
Do you read the newspaper, Andrea?
I do. I enjoy reading the newspaper.
And you can try reading a newspaper in English.
Well friends, it's important to learn the things we just talked about.
Remember, you can say coupon or coupon.
It's up to you.
And we have more to learn right now with Christina.
(Chinese).
I always save money at the supermarket.
How do you do that?
First, I read the grocery ads.
I know what's on sale.
Ooh, that saves money.
Then I make a list of things to buy.
I only buy what is on the list.
Ooh, that saves money too.
Put bananas on the list. I love bananas!
OK, OK, it's on the list.
I also find coupons in the newspaper.
Ooh, coupons save money.
Yes. I save a few cents for a few dollars.
But you won't find any coupons in the newspaper today.
What? Why not?
I found them first!
Now let's review our key words.
The first one is: coupon.
Or, coupon.
This coupon will save you money on soap.
cent.
cent.
I need 75 cents to buy some soda.
dollar.
dollar.
Can I borrow 50 dollars?
whole.
whole.
Dan ate the whole pizza!
newspaper.
newspaper.
Ryan reads the newspaper online every morning.
Well friends, right now it's time for us to continue.
What are we going to do right now?
We're going to go enjoy Song Time.
(Music).
