Lights.

Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone. My name is Andrea.
And I am your teacher, Gabe.
Today we're talking about computer games.
I know that many of you like to play computer games.
I myself like some computer games.
And we have a lot to learn today.
And there's always something to learn in our Read It paragraph.
So if you have a magazine, and I hope you do, please open up your magazine and
let's get started.
Here we go.
Many people enjoy computer games.
Children, teens and adults all play them.
Years ago, people played alone.
But now many people play with others.
They play computer games on the Internet with strangers.
Or they play their friends.
People play all kinds of games too.
In some games, they fight bad guys.
In other games, they must pass different levels to reach a goal.
Some games are educational.
Others are just fun!
Some games are educational.
Others are just fun.
Of course, games should be fun.
But does everybody play computer games?
No.
And here we find out that years ago, many people played alone.
We see two key words here.
ago.
You use this word to talk about time.
You can say: Many years ago I liked this kind of movie.
Or, a long time ago, we saw each other more often.
Now we don't see each other.
A long time ago, or many years ago, or two minutes ago something happened.
Two minutes ago, something exciting happened.
Well, we were starting our teaching.
Oh, that's right.
Yes, that's true, about two minutes ago or some time ago.
Now many stories start with the phrase "A long time ago." So "ago" talks about a
time in the past.
You can also use this to talk about other things.
I started college three years ago.
Or, I traveled around the world a year ago.
You use this word "ago" to talk about time.
And about 30 seconds ago, I used another key word "alone." Let's talk about this
together.
If you do something alone, you do it by yourself.
And it's true.
If you play computer games or video games, many times you can do that alone.
Well, right now I'm not alone.
Gabe is here teaching with me.
Yeah.
But we often teach alone.
We teach alone when we look at our conversations.
So it's nice to teach alone.
But it's also nice to teach together, right, Gabe?
That's right. Teaching together is better. It's fun.
Of course, there are some things that people do alone.
And do you play video games?
Do you like to play alone, or do you like to play with other people?
Well, later in this conversation, we see another key word.
It's the key word "fight." When you fight something or when you fight someone,
that means you are trying to win.
You want to do better than they do at something.
You are fighting.
And in some video games, you have to fight the bad guys.
Now I guess it's OK to fight in video games.
But you don't really want to fight other people.
When you fight them, you're using your hands and your arms to hurt that person.
That's right. Your hands, your arms, and sometimes your words to hurt somebody
else.
So if you see somebody fighting, say, "Stop fighting!" Guys! Please! Stop
fighting!
Don't fight right now.
We have two more key words to look at.
The first one is "pass." When you play a game, many times you have to pass
different levels.
If you pass something, that means you did OK.
You did a good job.
And you can go to a more challenging or more difficult level.
Now we can also use this word "pass" to talk about school.
You pass a test.
When you pass a test, you did well enough to keep going.
You also pass a class.
That means you can go to the next level or go to the next class.
So we use this word "pass" to talk about school and... and also to talk about
computer games.
Well, here's a little test for you, Andrea.
How do you spell our next key word?
You spell our next key word L-E-V-E-L.
That's right. You passed the test.
Yes!
Now what is a level?
In a video game or computer game, the level is how difficult something is.
There are many different levels in computer games.
The first level is usually the easiest.
The last level is the hardest.
And some computer games today have many levels.
Some have 30 or 40 levels.
And some computer games are still quite simple, and they might just have two or
three levels.
Well, right now it's time for us to move on to the next level.
You passed the first part.
The next level is with Christina.
Here we go.
(Chinese).
Many people enjoy computer games.
Children, teens and adults all play them.
And monkeys do too.
I like computer games.
People and monkeys used to play alone.
But not anymore.
Now you can play with friends or strangers on the Internet.
That's right. People and monkeys play all kinds of games.
Yeah. In some games, you flight the bad guys.
And in some games, you pass different levels.
That's right. Some games are educational.
You learn things.
And some games are just for fun.
Hey, will you play a computer game with me?
Sure! That will be fun.
OK. Goodbye.
Goodbye?
Yeah, I'm going home so we can play together online.
All right. Now let's review our key words.
Say them with us.
The first one is: ago.
ago.
Two years ago, Andy moved to New York.
alone.
alone.
Do you go to the movies alone?
fight.
fight.
Stop those two boys! They are fighting!
pass.
pass.
Anita didn't pass her test. She only got 54 percent.
level.
level.
There are five levels in this video game. I'm on level four.
That's pretty good.
What else is pretty good is our time with the Word Brothers.
I miss the Word Brothers.
Let's join them now.
Hi, everyone. I'm Jim.
And I'm Tim. We're...
The Word Brothers.
We are similar.
But very different.
Yes, just like some English words.
Right. For example, hour, H-O-U-R.
And our, O-U-R.
These two words sound the same.
But they are very different.
Mmhm. We use "hour," H-O-U-R, when we talk about time.
One hour is 60 minutes.
Yes. And there are 24 hours in one day.
How many hours do you sleep each night?
Hour, H-O-U-R.
Hour, H-O-U-R, is different from our, O-U-R.
Our, O-U-R, means that something belongs to us.
Right. My brother and I have a room.
We share it.
It is our room.
O-U-R.
Mmhm. We have the same mom.
She is our mom.
We have the same dad.
He is our dad.
Right. And you are our friends.
We like you very much.
Yes, we do.
Well friends, our.
And hour.
Can you see the difference.
Good. Until next time, this is Jim.
And Tim saying...
Bye-bye.
