Lights.

Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everyone. My name is Andrea.
And I am Gabe.
Today we're starting a new month - the month of May.
And our lesson is called: Home Addresses or Home Addresses.
You can say that word in different ways.
Now, where do you live?
Do you live on a street or a road?
Do you live in an apartment building?
Your address probably has a number in it.
We have a lot to learn today.
You will talk about these key words - road, street, live, apartment - in our
lesson.
And we have more.
Let's get started with our Read It.
Addresses use numbers and road or street names.
In America, the numbers are before street names.
Look at an example.
Sarah lives on Greenway Road.
Her house number is 220.
So Sarah's address is 220 Greenway Road.
Apartment addresses are a little different.
The apartment number or letter is often after the road or street name.
An apartment address might be 76 Apple Street, Apartment 3.
What is at the end of an address?
The city, state and zip code!
What is at the end of an address?
The city, state and zip code.
There are 50 states in America.
And a zip code is the number that says where the city is.
Now today we are talking about home addresses.
This is an interesting word - address.
What's another way to say this word, Andrea?
You can also say "address." So you have two choices.
You can say "address" or "address." My address is..., or my address is...
My address is 526 Hawthorne Road.
Well, that's an example of an address or an address.
And here we see a key word.
road.
What's a road?
Well, you can walk down a road.
You can drive on a road.
There are buildings and houses and apartments on the side of the road.
Do you live on a road?
Well, then that road... the name of that road is part of your address.
Now in English, when you write your address and you live on a road...
For example, you might live on Blue Road.
You can write "Road". That's true.
Or you can just write "Rd." That's a short way to say "Road" when you are
writing your address.
And we have another key word like this.
It's the word "street." A street is also a kind of road.
Now Andrea, usually I think of streets as a little different than roads.
How are streets and roads different?
Well, roads are usually bigger than streets.
A road is often wider than a street, and it's often longer than a street.
Cities have different roads and different streets.
So is your home on a road or a street?
Road and street.
Now there's also a shorter way to say... or to write Street.
You can just write "St." for "Street." Well, where do you live?
Do you live on a road or on a street?
"Live" is another key word.
If you live somewhere, that means you are in an apartment or a house for a long
time.
You are not just on vacation.
You are there for a long time.
You live there.
So you can say you live on a road or a street.
You can also say you live in a city.
I live in Taipei.
You can also use this word to talk about the country you live in or lived in.
I used to live in Canada.
So there are many ways to use this verb.
So you can say you live in a country or in a city.
But when you're talking about the road or the street, you live on that road.
I live on Chester Road.
Or I live on Chester Street.
Now we see another key word here.
apartment.
An apartment is a kind of place that people live in.
You could live in a house, or you live in an apartment.
An apartment is in a building, and usually there are many different apartments
in a building.
Do you live in an apartment?
I live in an apartment.
And my apartment is at the end of the road.
At the end of the road.
Well, at the end of our time, here we have another key word.
It is the word "end." It's not the beginning.
It's the end.
That means there's nothing left afterwards.
You could talk about the end of a movie or the end of a book.
It's the end of a movie.
And it was a great movie.
Well, it is the end of our time for now.
We do need to continue.
Let's learn something else with Christina.
(Chinese).
I want to send you a card.
Oh, that's nice!
But I don't know your address.
I can help you.
I'll write my address on the envelope.
Yeah! Then I can send you the card.
OK. First, I'll write my name.
And then your address.
I'll write my house number, then the name of my street.
OK. 2012 Mayday Avenue.
Mmhm. Now I'll write the city and the state.
Yeah, and don't forget the zip code.
I won't. It goes last.
There.
Hooray! Now I can send this card to you.
Wait. You... you need to put a stamp on it first.
Oh, I don't have a stamp.
You can't mail it without a stamp.
OK, then just take the card. Here.
Oh, a card!
What a surprise.
Hey, friends, let's review our key words.
The first one is: road.
Say it again.
road.
Please tell me the name of this road.
street.

My favorite restaurant is on this street.
live.

Rudy lives in a house on White Road.

Susie's apartment is in the city.
