It's time to play a game that we'd like to call: I Know It!
I Know It!
Do you know it?
Well, I'm going to talk about one of our key words.
I'll describe the key word.
And I want you to see if you can say "I know it!" Here we go.
You might have one of these in your home as a pet.
A dog, a cat, an elephant, a bunny.
These are all this kind of thing.
Andrea.
Uh, yes?
I... I know it! I know it! Do you know it, friends?
OK, the animal is...
I mean, the key word is "animal," right?
You got it! Good job!
Yes, a dog is an animal.
A cat is an animal.
A bunny is an animal.
An elephant is an animal.
Think of all the animals that you can think of in English.
All right, friends, let's continue now with Conversation A.
Hi, Carol!
Hi, Susie. How are you?
I'm great! I love spring.
Spring is not my favorite season.
Why not? Spring is great.
I love the warm weather.
I do too. But I sneeze a lot in the spring.
I'm sorry. Does medicine help?
Yes. But I need some more.
Can I go to the store for you?
Spring is a wonderful season.
But some parts of spring are not that great, especially for Carol.
In Conversation A, Carol is sneezing.
And some people sneeze a lot in the spring.
Spring is a time for new life.
And with new life, sometimes there are things in the air that might cause you to
be a little sick or to sneeze.
So Carol says, "Spring is not my favorite season." It's not her favorite season.
Now we say this when we don't really like something that much, or it's not what
we like the most.
Let's try using this phrase in another way.
Apples are not my favorite fruit.
Well, maybe you don't hate apples, but you don't like them that much.
So you can say: Apples or not my favorite fruit.
History is not my favorite subject.
Dogs are not my favorite animal.
Try using this phrase today.
Well, we have more to learn.
Let's take a look at Conversation B.
Thanks. But I can go to the store after work.
I can take a break and walk to the store now.
The weather is great!
That's true.
I can see flowers on my way to the store.
Many flowers are growing now.
That's right.
I might see some baby animals too.
Maybe.
New life is everywhere.
OK! You can go to the store now.
Great!
Well, at the beginning of this conversation, Carol says, "I can go to the store
after work." Susie says, "I can take a break." She then says,
"I can see flowers." And later Carol says, "You can go to the store now." I
can... I can... You can... You can...
Now how is this different from "I will..." or "you will..."?
If I say "I will," that means you know I am going to do it.
If I just say "I can," that means I might do it.
You know I could do it.
But maybe I won't really do it.
So "will you" or "can you"?
They are different things.
Now in this conversation, Susie says, "I can take a break and walk to the store
now." Walk to a place now.
I can walk to school now.
I can walk to the office now.
Let's walk to that restaurant right now.
Later Susie says, "New life is everywhere." That means she's looking around, and
she sees new life all over the place.
You can say: Animals are everywhere at the zoo.
Or, this is a nice forest. Trees are everywhere.
And in spring, new life is everywhere.
Well, now it's time to review.
Here we go.
For some people, spring is their favorite season.
The weather is getting warmer.
The days are longer.
Spring is a time of new life.
Many baby animals are born in the spring.
People love little chicks, kittens and puppies.
In some places, flowers grow at this time of year.
Spring is a great season!
Hi, Carol!
Hi, Susie. How are you?
I'm great! I love spring.
Spring is not my favorite season.
Why not? Spring is great.
I love the warm weather.
I do too. But I sneeze a lot in the spring.
I'm sorry. Does medicine help?
Yes. But I need some more.
Can I go to the store for you?
Great!
Calendar Phrase.
The weather is great.
The weather is great.
(Chinese).
It's a wonderful day.
The weather is great.
But it's raining.
I'm so happy.
The weather is great.
But it's windy.
Hooray. The weather is great.
But it's raining outside and it's windy too.
I know.
The weather is great... for cleaning the house.
Oh, no.
The weather is great.
The weather is great.
(Chinese).
Let's Answer It!
Here is question number one.
What does Carol do a lot in the spring?
Now we found this answer in today's lesson.
What does Carol do a lot in the spring?
Uh, Gabe, can you answer it?
Yes. Yes, I can.
The answer was in Conversation A.
She sneezes.
That's right. Carol sneezes a lot in the spring.
OK, here's question number two.
Do you like spring? Why or why not?
Well, this question is for Andrea.
Do you like spring? Why or why not?
Yes, I like spring.
Spring is a wonderful season.
It's a time to think about new life.
It's a time to breathe in fresh air.
It's a time to go outside and take a walk.
I like spring.
Andrea, I am not surprised.
I knew you liked spring.
Well, what about you, friends?
Do you like spring?
Talk about it.
Thank you for joining us today.
And of course, we hope to see you next time right here on...
Let's Talk in English.
Goodbye.
Goodbye.
(Music).
