Let's Talk in English.
Hello, everyone, and welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Andrea.
And my name is Gabe.
We're continuing to talk about baseball today.
What is today's lesson about?
A Baseball Game.
Have you ever been to a baseball game?
Do you like baseball games?
Well, what do you need to know if you go to a baseball game?
Can you talk about a baseball game?
Can you talk about it in English?
Today you're going to learn a lot.
Let's get started with our Read It paragraph.
Open your magazine, and here we go.
Baseball fans cheer for their favorite teams.
A baseball game usually lasts nine innings.
But it can be longer.
If the score is tied, the teams play extra innings until one team wins.
The longest game in professional baseball history lasted 33 innings!
Fans sat and watched that game for more than eight hours.
Kids love baseball too.
Many cities and countries have Little League teams.
Boys and girls from ages 5 to 18 can play.
Do you have your magazine?
Good.
Then you see that first key word right there.
It's the word, long.
In our Read It paragraph, it says a baseball game can be longer than just nine
innings.
If something is long, that means it is not short.
If you talk about something being a long time, that means you have to wait a
while before it is finished.
It's very long.
Yes. And here, "long" is talking about time.
You can say: How long does it take you to walk to school?
How long does it take you?
Well, maybe it takes you five minutes to walk to school.
That's how long it takes you.
How long was the movie you watched?
The movie was two hours long.
Well, that's not a very long movie.
Most movies are that long.
But if you are on a long flight, maybe ten or twelve hours, that's a long
flight.
And you can watch many long movies.
That is true.
Now usually baseball games are nine innings.
But sometimes they are longer.
If the score is tied, teams play extra innings.
That's right. And we see two key words here in this sentence.
The first one is "score." The score is how many points a team has.
Or if you are comparing two teams, it's how many points each team has.
What is the score?
Well, the score is 5 to 7.
One team has 5 points, the other team has 7 points.
That is the score.
Now yesterday we saw this word "score" as a verb.
And today it is a noun.
So players score points for their team.
And fans want their team's score to be higher than the other team.
So you can use this word as a noun or as a verb.
And if the score is the same for both teams, that's called a "tie." Or when the
team ties with the other team, the points are the same.
We see this key word here "tie" as a verb.
If the teams are tied, that means the points are the same, and you might have to
keep playing some more innings before the game is over.
Now we learn a little bit about baseball history here.
And "history" is another key word.
History is anything that happened in the past.
history.
history.
Many of you might take history class at school.
You learn about things that happened in the past in your country.
You can also learn about your family history.
Learn about your family in the past.
My friend Joey is a history teacher.
Actually, he knows a lot about baseball.
He could probably teach baseball history too.
He loved baseball ever since he was a kid.
And "kid" is a key word.
A kid is a child - someone who's not yet an adult.
Are you a kid?
Well, we have many kids learning English with us today.
You can ask someone, "Do you have any kids?" It's a way to ask, "Do you have any
children?" Or you can say: Hey, he's a great kid.
And it's fun to be a kid.
It's also fun to continue learning with Christina.
Here we go.
(Chinese).
Go, go, go! Go, team, go! Yeah!
What are you doing?
I'm cheering for my favorite team.
That's good.
Baseball is more fun when you cheer.
Go, go, go! I can cheer for a long time.
Go, team, go!
That's great because baseball games last for a long time - nine innings.
Yeah. And I can cheer for nine innings.
Go, team, go!
But if the score is tied, the teams play extra innings.
I can cheer for extra innings. Go, go, go!
How many extra innings?
Oh, they play until one team wins.
Sometimes the team... uh, the game goes on and on and on and...
Then my cheering will go on and on and on... Go, go, go!
OK, OK, it's time to go, go, go.
Go, go, go!
Go.
Baseball fans cheer for their favorite teams.

Kids love baseball too.
Many cities and countries have Little League teams.
Boys and girls from ages 5 to 18 can play.
OK, let's review our key words.
The first one is: long.
long.
This is a really long movie. I don't have time to watch it.
score.
score.
The score is 5 to 1. Our team is going to win!
tie.
tie.
The teams are tied. They have the same score.
history.
history.
What is the history of this country?
kid.
kid.
The kids are playing at the park.
And right now it's time for us to continue with a Commercial Break.
