Let's Talk in English.
Hi, everybody. Welcome to LTE TV.
My name is Andrea.
And I am Gabe.
Our lesson today is called Unusual Foods.
Unusual... What does that mean?
That means kind of strange.
So we're going to learn about some strange foods today.
What kind of foods are strange?
Well, let's start learning.
Open your magazine to the Read It paragraph for today.
Here we go.
Cheese, stinky tofu, insects - these are common foods in some places.
But they are considered strange in other places.
How about chicken feet?
If you live in Asia, you eat them.
But people in other places think they're an unusual food.
Some people like to eat different flavors together.
Sweet and sour.
Bitter and sweet.
Or they eat different foods together, like chocolate and bacon.
Does this seem strange to you?
Not to many Americans!
Um... Andrea, that seems a little bit strange to me.
I am American, and I don't eat chocolate and bacon together.
Do you?
No, Gabe, actually I don't.
It also seems strange to me.
But I do have some friends who like to eat bacon with different things.
So they might eat bacon and chocolate.
And those friends are American.
Well, what do you know?
Some Americans like bacon and chocolate together.
Well, I know a lot of people who like bacon, and a lot of people who like
chocolate.
This is our key word.
It's the last key word of our Read It paragraph.
Do you like chocolate?
Many people like chocolate.
There are different things that are made from chocolate, like chocolate ice
cream.
That is delicious.
It is delicious.
And chocolate cake, chocolate cookies, even just a chocolate bar.
Chocolate is very sweet.
But you can use it in many different things when you're cooking or baking.
OK. Well Andrea, here is my second question for you.
OK.
Would you ever have chocolate and stinky tofu?
Oh!
Oh yeah.
You mean chocolate...
Yeah.
And stinky tofu together?
Yeah, sure.
No. No, no. That seems strange to me.
Yeah, maybe it's a little strange.
But maybe it can taste good too.
We have another key word here.
It's our first key word.
tofu.
Do you like tofu?
I do. I do. I like tofu.
Tofu is delicious.
Tofu is made out of soybeans.
And there are many different kinds of tofu.
You can make tofu salty, or you can make tofu sweet.
Tofu is very healthy.
Yes, it is.
You can make it salty, sweet, or even stinky - stinky tofu.
Do you like stinky tofu?
Many people do.
Well, you can make tofu in different ways.
You can also make insects or cook insects in different ways.
"Insect" is a key word.
It's a little animal that has six legs.
An insect.
Yes, an insect.
Now usually you see insects on the ground, or maybe on a tree, or in a park.
You don't often see insects on your plate for dinner.
Well, I guess I don't often see insects on my plate for dinner.
It's not a common food for me.
But like we learn in our Read It, it is a common food in some places.
That's right.
And I just have to say, I have tried fried bee.
Bees are insects, and I've tried them fried.
They taste delicious.
I like fried insects.
Well, what was the flavor like, Gabe?
Well, the flavor was a little bit different.
Actually, it kind of tasted like popcorn.
That might be one reason why I liked these fried insects.
The flavor is delicious.
And "flavor" is a key word.
The flavor of something is how it tastes.
Is it sweet, salty, bitter, stinky?
What's the flavor?
Well, what are some other flavors?
Food can be sour or bitter.
Those are also flavors.
And "sour" is a key word.
Now when something is sour, it's not sweet.
It kind of makes your mouth get a lot of water inside if it's sour.
That's right.
A lemon is a sour fruit. Wow.
It's not a bitter fruit, though.
"Bitter" is another key word.
If something is bitter, it doesn't have a sweet taste or a salty taste or sour.
Some coffee is very bitter.
If it's black and without any sugar or milk, it can taste bitter.
You can also get bitter chocolate.
That's chocolate without a lot of sugar.
Well friends, we've learned a lot about different kinds of foods.
And let's keep learning with Christina.
(Chinese).
Some people eat strange food.
You're right.
In some places, strange food is very common.
Is cheese strange?
Some cheese is strange. It smells bad.
Oh. Hmm, how about stinky tofu?
It smells really bad too.
Yes, stinky tofu stinks.
Stinky tofu is so stinky.
Hey, do you eat insects?
No! I think eating bugs is really strange.
Do you eat chicken feet?
Oh, eating chicken feet is really strange too.
Yeah. Why do people eat strange food?
We think some food is strange.
But other people think it's delicious.
Oh. How strange!
Oh well, everybody knows bananas are delicious.
They're not strange at all!
OK, let's review our key words.
The first one is: tofu.
tofu.
Tofu is a very healthy food.
insect.
insect.
You left the door open. Now there are lots of insects inside!
flavor.
Mmhm.
flavor.
I love the flavor of this dish. It's a little sweet and a little spicy.
sour.
sour.
This lemon is very sour.
And bitter.
bitter.
This coffee is bitter. Can I please have some sugar?
chocolate.
chocolate.
Mom loves chocolate. She eats some for dessert every night.
Great job.
Now let's go to a Commercial Break.
Hello. And welcome back to Cooking with the Best.
My name is Chef Drool.
And today we are going to make a special dish that will taste wonderful.
Are you hungry?
Of course you are.
We have many kinds of foods in this pot.
We have tofu, chicken feet, chocolate, and my favorite - bugs.
Still alive.
All these delicious foods have wonderful flavors.
I will mix them together, and they will taste wonderful.
Let me taste it first, though. OK.
This dish is not very sour... not too sweet.
I will need to put more spice in the pot.
There we go. OK.
OK, let's taste it again.
Mmm. Ooh... oh now... now that is very spicy now. Ouch!
Oh. OK.
Very spicy!
Uh, we will be back with dessert after this break.
Ah, I need some water! Water! Water!
