(Music).
Hello, everyone, and welcome to Let's Talk in English.
I am Gabe.
And I'm glad that you could join us here today.
Today is another review day.
What did we talk about this week?
Well, we talked about the weather.
How's the weather?
How's the weather today?
Is it sunny? Is it rainy?
Is it good weather or bad weather?
Is it thundering outside?
Is it really windy?
Or is it nice weather?
What else did we talk about?
Well, maybe you have a cellphone.
We talked about cellphones and smartphones, and the different things you can do
with them.
We have a lot to review right now.
Pay attention because Ginger will be here soon, and we have some questions just
for you.
Here we go.
How is the weather today?
Is it a beautiful, sunny day?
Or is it cold and rainy?
In March, the weather can change from day to day.
It can even change on the same day!
In the morning, the sun might shine.
But in the afternoon, it might rain hard!
So check the weather forecast.
Take a jacket and an umbrella with you.
But you may not need them!
Hi, Ken. How is the weather now?
The weather is great, Carol!
Really? It was raining this morning.
Well, it is not raining now.
The sun is shining.
It's a beautiful day.
Good. I like nice weather.
Me too.
But I don't mind cold weather.
Do you like all kinds of weather?
No. Sometimes it rains really hard.
I don't like that.
What is the weather forecast for tomorrow?
I don't know.
I can check.
Thanks.
Tomorrow morning will be beautiful and sunny.
Great! And the afternoon?
The afternoon will be cold and rainy.
Don't forget your umbrella tomorrow.
OK, thanks.
Maybe you can be our new weather reporter.
No thanks.
I like my job behind the camera.
You check tomorrow's weather forecast.
There will be clear skies in the morning.
It may get a little windy in the afternoon.
But when you go out the next morning, the weather is different.
The wind is blowing hard because a storm is coming.
You hear thunder and it starts to rain.
What happened?
Weathermen try to give the right forecast, but sometimes they're wrong.
Why? No one can control the weather!
Ken! What happened?
It started to rain, so I started running.
Didn't you have an umbrella?
No.
The forecast was for clear skies this morning.
But now it's raining?
Yes! The weatherman was wrong!
Is it windy?
Yes! The wind is blowing really hard.
It wasn't windy or rainy when I came this morning.
When did you come to work?
Half an hour ago.
But the weather can change in a moment.
You're right.
There's a big storm coming.
The thunder is really loud.
I'm sorry you didn't have an umbrella.
Me too.
I always have an umbrella with me.
But it doesn't rain every day.
An umbrella is useful when it's sunny too!
Do you own a cellphone?
Many people do.
What do you usually do with your cellphone?
Do you check the time?
Do you text people?
The average adult in America sends about 300 text messages a month.
That is a lot.
But the average teenager in America sends about 3,339 texts a month.
That's more than 100 texts a day!
American teens use their phones a lot.
But they text more often than they talk!
Almost everyone owns a cell phone now.
That's true. And people use them a lot.
I know.
You can check the time.
I don't wear a watch now.
I still use a watch.
But I talk on my phone a lot.
I talk to at least 50 people a day.
I talk on mine a lot too.
And I send text messages.
Do you text very often?
I do. I text more often than I talk.
How many text messages do you send a day?
I send a lot. I send about 20.
That's not a lot.
The average American teenager sends more than 100 texts a day.
Did you know that?
No.
Wow. Teens use their cellphones a lot.
There is one very important rule for polite cellphone use.
Be considerate.
If you are out with other people, don't answer calls or make calls.
Your friends want to spend time with you.
They don't want to listen to your phone calls.
When your phone rings, look at the people around you.
Will you bother them if you answer your phone?
If you will, don't answer the call.
You can always return the call later.
Hey, Susie. What's wrong?
Some people have no manners.
What do you mean?
I went to the doctor this morning.
While I was waiting, a woman answered her cellphone.
That's OK.
Isn't it?
No! She had a long, loud conversation.
Everyone had to listen.
Was the call important?
No. She was just chatting.
She didn't have to answer her phone when it rang.
She could return the call later.
Exactly!
People talk on their phones too much in restaurants too.
That is rude.
Your friends don't want to listen to you talk on the phone.
You're right.
I don't answer my phone in a restaurant.
That's just my rule.
That's very considerate!
Cellphones were once just simple communication tools.
Now phones are "smart." Smartphones are little computers, music players, video
game players and cameras.
With a smartphone, you can check movie show times, pay bills and answer emails.
But smartphones can cause problems.
They make noise when you receive new emails, texts or comments on your Facebook
page.
You'll want to check these all the time, and you won't get other things done.
Hello, everyone, and welcome to Let's Talk.
Let's welcome our special guest for today - Mr. Tech.
What can you tell us about smartphones, Mr. Tech?
Well, cellphones used to be just simple communication tools.
But now they can do so much more.
That's why we call them smart, right?
Yes. They're little computers, music players, video game players and cameras.
I like that.
I do too. Smartphones are so convenient!
But can smartphones be too convenient?
Yes, they can cause problems.
Many people are on them all the time.
I do use mine a lot.
I check movie show times and restaurant reviews.
I check my email and read comments on my Facebook page.
And I don't get other things done.
That's the problem!
Well hello, everyone. I am here with Ginger, and... and... and...
And I'm here with Gabe.
Right, Ginger?
It's your turn.
What? Hey, don't bother me.
I'm playing with my smartphone.
Well, look at that!
A monkey with a smartphone.
What's next?
Ginger, please help me ask some questions about this week's lessons.
Oh. Yeah, OK.
Uh, you go first.
All right.
But you better pay attention.
All right.
What does Lily always have with her?
I know.
Lily always has her umbrella with her.
Hey, how did you know that?
My smartphone told me.
Wow, that is a smartphone!
Yeah. And I'm a smart monkey too.
Now here's question number two.
What does Susie not do in a restaurant?
Well, that's easy. I know the answer to that one.
She doesn't answer phones in a restaurant.
That's her rule.
Hey, hey, hey! How did you know that?
Because I am a smart man.
I don't need a smartphone.
So smartphones are for monkeys.
Uh, only here on Let's Talk in English.
Hey, let's take a break.
That's a smartidea.
