(Music).
Hey everybody, and welcome to Let's Talk in English.
My name is Gabe.
And of course, it is our Saturday Show, so we hope that you are relaxing.
We hope that you find some time to practice what you have learned this week.
And we learned a lot this week.
We learned how to talk about Chinese New Year in English.
And hey, how did you celebrate Chinese New Year anyway?
Did you shoot off some firecrackers into the sky?
Did you play some games with your friends?
Maybe you ate a really big dinner at a round table.
I bet you had a lot of delicious fish.
Well friends, I have another question for you.
Did you get any red envelopes with money inside?
I hope you experience good fortune this year.
Now, we also talked about being early and being late.
Are you an early bird?
I'm not.
Or are you a night owl?
I'm not really a night owl, either.
You see, I like to sleep.
But I do have more energy at night.
You know, we talked about making plans and... Well, we talked about many things.
Friends, it's time for us to review this week's lessons.
But pay attention because we have some questions for you.
Who's "we"?
Well, Ginger and I, of course.
We'll see you soon.
Happy Chinese New Year!
Today is the first day of the Year of the Dragon.
Asians all over the world celebrate for 15 days.
The holiday is also called Lunar New Year and Spring Festival.
On Chinese New Year's Eve, families eat a big dinner.
Everyone comes home for it.
After dinner, they may watch TV or play games.
Then at 12:00, firecrackers welcome the new year!
Happy Chinese New Year!
When is Chinese New Year.
Today is the first day.
In Chinese culture, each year has an animal, right?
That's right.
What year is it?
It is the Year of the Dragon!
How do you celebrate?
My family has dinner together on Chinese New Year's Eve.
We eat many special foods.
What else do you do?
After dinner, we watch TV or play games.
That's fun.
Then the firecrackers begin at 12:00.
They welcome the new year.
That must be loud!
It is.
You know, Chinese also call Chinese New Year Spring Festival.
Really? You celebrate spring in January?
Sure. Spring is the first season of the year!
People decorate their homes with flowers for Chinese New Year.
Flowers mean new life and good fortune.
People have oranges and tangerines in their homes too.
These fruits also mean good fortune.
People hang the Chinese word fu in their homes.
Fu means blessing and good fortune.
Children love Chinese New Year.
They get hong bao or red envelopes with money in them.
Parents and other adults give the envelopes.
Here. These are for you two.
Thank you.
Why are you giving us oranges?
Oranges and tangerines mean good fortune.
I'm wishing you good luck in the new year.
Thanks! I will eat mine now.
I didn't give you a hong bao.
I'm sorry.
What's a hong bao?
It is a red envelope with money in it!
Did you get a hong bao?
No. I work, so I didn't get one.
So who gets them?
Children do.
They are always very excited.
I get excited about free money too!
It's a blessing!
Who gives red envelopes?
Parents and adult friends give them.
Bosses at work give them too.
Really?!
Don't look at me!
I don't have any red envelopes.
Do you wake up early or stay up late?
Maybe you usually wake up early.
Then you are an "early bird." Or maybe you often stay up late.
So you are a "night owl." Early birds may exercise, clean or do other tasks in
the morning.
They don't feel tired or sleepy in the morning.
Night owls have more energy at night.
They may work or watch TV late at night.
I'm sleepy today.
Did you stay up late last night?
Yes. I often go to bed late.
You're an night owl.
I am.
I prepare for the next day's show every night.
Do you have enough energy during the day?
Yes. I don't need a lot of sleep.
Or maybe you drink too much coffee!
Are you a night owl or an early bird, Lily?
I'm an early bird!
I go to bed early and wake up early!
I wake up at 5 a.m.
That's early!
What do you do in the morning?
I exercise.
I cook breakfast.
Then I watch the news.
Wow! You have a lot of energy in the morning!
Do you make plans?
Some people enjoy planning their day, their week or their year!
They like to organize their time well and be prepared.
They also like to have goals for what they will do with their time.
Other people don't like to plan ahead.
They don't want their plans to limit them.
They want to be free to do different things.
They want to wait and see what will happen each day!
What are you doing, Susie?
I'm planning my week.
Do you always make plans?
Yes. I like to make plans.
Then I can use my time well.
I don't like to make plans.
Why?
If I make a lot of plans, I'm not free.
Sure you are!
You can plan your free time!
We're different.
You enjoy organizing your time. I don't.
If I plan my day or my week, I can reach my goals.
If I don't plan my days, then my plans don't limit me.
I can do anything!
I understand.
So what do you want to do right now, Ken?
I don't know.
But I don't want to make any plans!
Are you shy?
Shy people often feel nervous when they meet new people.
They may feel uncomfortable talking in front of a group.
Some people think shy people are unfriendly or even rude.
But they're not!
They just don't want a lot of attention.
On the other hand, outgoing people usually don't mind getting attention.
They are very social and enjoy making new friends.
They are confident when they talk to people.
Carol, you're a very social person.
Have you always been so outgoing?
Yes. I was even outgoing as a child!
I'm outgoing now, but I was shy when I was younger.
That's hard to believe!
You're a TV show host now.
I know. I don't mind being on TV.
Actually, I love it!
But you didn't like getting attention before?
No. I hated attention!
Now you meet new people every day.
And you're so good at talking to them!
Thank you.
But I didn't like talking to people when I was a kid.
Did people think you were unfriendly?
Yes. They probably thought I was rude too!
But I wasn't.
Our personalities can change, can't they?
They can, and I'm glad!
Becoming more outgoing helped me find the perfect job!
Ginger, I'm here!
Ginger?
Ginger is sleeping again.
Hmm, how can I wake her up?
Let's see...
Ooh! I know.
Hey, why did you wake me up?
Well Ginger, you need to be awake to help me give our students and our friends a
little quiz.
All right.
And the first question is: What is inside of red envelopes?
I know. It's money, of course.
Lots and lots of money!
Great job.
And here is a hong bao just for you.
Thanks!
Oh, and I have a second question.
It is this: What do you call someone who often stays up late at night?
Well, that's easy, Ginger.
You call that person a night owl.
Are you a night owl, Ginger?
Ginger?
Ah, there she goes again.
Sleeping.
She must have stayed up late last night.
Ginger is a night owl.
Huh? Hey, that's not right!
Hey, you're awake again!
What's not right?
I'm not a night owl, Mr. Gabe.
I'm a monkey.
So you're a night monkey?
Uh, yeah, I guess so. A night monkey.
I'm sorry, if you stay up late, you're called a night owl.
Night monkey! Night monkey!
Night owl! Night owl!
Night monkey! Night monkey! Night monkey!
Hey, what are you doing?
I'm just going to take some money out of this hong bao...
OK, OK, I'm a night owl. I'm a night owl.
I thought so.
Here's your hong bao back.
Now it's time for us to take a littlebreak.
