This month’s American Culture Corner takes us back to the United States,
where we’ll learn what it’s like to be a guest in an American home.
Staying with a family in a foreign country can be a little unsettling.
You’re not sure if you’re doing the right things or saying the right things.
You don’t want to embarrass yourself.
And you don’t want to offend your hosts.
So we hope if you ever plan to visit an American family, you’ll find this lesson
helpful.
Two words to know before the reading include sheet and blanket.
Let’s take a look at the word sheet as in:
Do you have any clean sheets for the bed?
blanket.
I got cold last night, so I need another blanket on my bed.

Learn how to be a good houseguest.
Walk into an American bedroom and you will probably first notice the many
pillows decorating the bed.
Do you really have to sleep with all of them?
No.
That’s the style.
Take them off and you’ll find one in a pillowcase to sleep on.
Also, you’ll find two sheets on the bed,
which you are supposed to sleep between.
This keeps the blankets and bedspread clean.

And I’m Chelsea.
And I’m Esther.
And we’re so happy you joined us today for the American Culture Corner article.
Now every month we’ll be talking to you about American culture.
Sometimes we can say it’s not just American culture but Western culture.
We’ll tell you,
we’ll give you tips about how people in the West live and help you.
And today we’re looking at how to stay in an American home.
There are some things that are different about an American home.
uh, different from other regions of the world.
And today we’re gonna look at how to be a good houseguest in an American home,
or how to be a good guest when you stay in a home.
And that is very important.
It’s something that you need to know anytime you are a guest in someone else’s
home,
but especially if you’re traveling to a different culture.
Because like Chip said, there will be some differences.
So let’s learn how to be a good houseguest in an American home right now.
If you look at your article, you’ll first notice it says:
Walk into an America bedroom and you will probably first notice the many pillows
decorating the bed.
Do you really have to sleep with all of them?
Esther, do you really have to sleep with so many pillows?
No, you don’t.
And the answer is no.
And if you have ever visited an American home or a home where people from
American or other places in the West live,
you’ll find that sometimes in the bedroom they might have four or six or even
eight pillows.
Now when we talk about pillows, we know it’s what we put our heads on, what we
lie on when we go to sleep.
But they don’t always use these pillows for sleeping.
That’s right.
Instead of using all eight pillows for sleeping, these pillows are mostly for
decoration, to make the bed look pretty.
It’s one of the ways that Americans decorate the bed.
That’s right.
That’s the style.
That’s what’s popular.
That’s what’s in fashion.
So if you go to an American home,
you are more than welcome to take some of those pillows off of the bed and find
the pillow that has the pillowcase on it.
Pillowcase is our first word today.
It’s a More Information word.
A pillowcase is simply the covering that goes around a pillow.
If you take the pillow out, the case will be separate.
So find the one with a pillowcase.
And the pillowcase is supposed to protect the pillow from getting dirty.
So it’s a protective cover on the pillow.
Look for the one with a pillowcase.
And you’ll also notice that when you pull back the bedspread, you’ll find two
sheets on the bed.
Esther, can you tell us about these sheets?
What are the sheets on the bed?
I sure can.
Now a sheet or a bedsheet is a long... it’s.. usually rectangular, and it’s a
thin piece of cloth.
And usually there are two bedsheets.
And you will sleep between the two bedsheets.
You have two bedsheets because one fits around the mattress or that soft cushion
padding that you sleep on.
And the other one lays on top of it.
And you sleep between them.
So you’ll find two sheets on the bed,
which you are supposed to sleep between.
You will also find a bedspread and some blankets.
Those are some other important words we need to take a look at.
What’s a blanket, Chip?
Well, a blanket is different from a sheet because it’s heavier.
A sheet is a very thin material, uh, very lightweight.
A blanket is a heavier uh, material.
And it’s not as lightweight.
It’s a lot more thick.
So it keeps you warm at night.
That’s right.
So we cover our bodies with a blanket when we sleep to prevent ourselves from
getting sick and to keep us warm.
Now there are many types of blankets.
Some are made from cotton.
Other are made from wool.
And later we’ll also talk about electric blankets.
Some even have electricity.
But for now let’s talk about bedspreads.
A bedspread is also different from sheets and a blanket.
A bedspread is usually the top covering.
It goes on the very top of the bed.
And it’s usually very decorative.
It’s very pretty.
And that’s what you put the pillows on.
And it kind of gives the room a nice look.
So the bedspread goes on top and you do not have to sleep under the bedspread.
Sometimes they are very thick and heavy.
And they would make you very, very hot if you slept under them.
If you get hot when you sleep, just pull it off and sleep under the blankets and
the sheets.
That’s right.
Usually, as you know, I don’t usually sleep under the bedspread.
It’s too hot for me.
But really the bedspread is just for decoration,
which is why it usually matches the pillows on the bed.

Homes come in different shapes and sizes.
Some are big.
(Music).
Some are small.
Some are new.
Some are old.
But inside an American home, many things are the same.
In an American Home, you usually don’t take your shoes off when you come in.
Sometimes you do take your shoes off when you come into an American home.
But there are no slippers to wear.
You just leave your socks on or walk in your bare feet.
In an American bathroom, you will find a tub and shower.
You’ll also find a shower curtain.
This curtain keeps the water off the floor when you shower.
So when you take a shower, put the edge of the shower curtain inside the tub and
spread it out.
That will keep the water off the floor while you shower.
When you stay in an American home, you usually stay in the guest room.
You will often see pillows on the bed.
Take these off before you go to sleep.
You will also find two sheets on the bed.
When you sleep, sleep between these sheets.

But Doris, why do we use the word ”stay”?
Can’t we say living in an American home?
Well, unless you’re going to stay for at least six months or more, you can’t say
you’re going to live in an American home.
You stay in an American home because it’s short-term.
You’re just a houseguest.
So if someone is going to move to America and settle down, then we say they’ll
be living in America.
That’s right.
It’s the same with staying at a hotel or staying at a hospital.
You’re only staying in these places because you’re there only for a few days or
a couple of weeks at most.
