(Music).
Hello, everyone.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for taking time out of your day to join us for this lesson.
My name is Steve.
Well, what do you think of when you hear the word ”hacker”?
Evil people who break into your computer to steal valuable information or infect
your computer with a virus?
That’s what I think of, too.
But as we’ll find out today,
the definition of hacker is changing.
Some hackers are actually kind people who want to do good things.
Let’s learn more after we look at three words.
First,
hack.
Sam hacked his cell phone to get free e-mail service.
I didn’t know you could do that.
The second word is tactic as in:
My standard chess strategy doesn’t work against the computer.
I need some new tactics.
And finally,
spine.
Sam needs to feed his cat more food.
Look, you can see its spine.
OK.
Let’s get into the reading.
It’s found on page forty-two.
Please follow along in your magazine.
Hackers to the Rescue?
Not all hackers are out to steal your money.
You wouldn’t want to be enemies with Luke McOmie.
As one of the world’s most skilled computer hackers,
McOmie can hack into just about any computer system on the planet.
With his two partners, Ryan Jones and Chris Nickerson,
McOmie has broken into the computers of financial institutions, law firms,
top-secret laboratories and multimillion-dollar companies.
In a world filled with big secrets,
McOmie’s team has the tactics and tools to send chills down the spine of any
security professional.
Hi, friends.
I’m Chip.
And I’m Rachel.
And we have such an interesting topic today, Chip.
We’re talking about hackers.
And when I think of a hacker, I think of a really bad person who wants to steal
my money.
But that’s not the kind of person we’re talking about today, is it?
That’s right.
Apparently, there are good hackers and there are bad hackers.
Now a hacker is someone who breaks into some kind of computer system usually in
order to steal money.
Exactly.
And we’re going to be talking about one of these computer hackers today named
Luke McOmie.
But he’s not a bad computer hacker.
He is a good one.
However, as our lesson says, we wouldn’t want to be enemies with him.
Now what does it mean, Chip, if you’re an enemy with somebody?
Is that somebody you really like and want to get along with?
Well, that is somebody that you are usually fighting with or angry at.
And you do not want Luke McOmie to be angry at you.
That’s because he’s a very smart man who could hack into your computer probably
very easily.
Our lesson tells us he is one of the world’s most skilled computer hackers.
That means he has a lot of skills when it comes to breaking into computers.
Now we’re going to use this word ”hacker” a lot as well as the word ”hack”.
Hack is the verb form of hacker.
And what does it mean when you hack into something?
Well, just as a robber or a thief might break into your house or break into your
car in order to steal something,
a hacker hacks into your computer system usually in order to steal information,
and eventually, maybe in order to steal money.
And this happens a lot, doesn’t it?
I know of people or companies even who have had their computer systems hacked
into.
And that is what Luke McOmie can do so well.
He is a professional hacker.
And our author says:
He can hack into just about any computer system on the planet.
So no computer system is too hard for him.
That’s right.
Our article says he has two partners, Ryan Jones and Chris Nickerson.
And together they have broken into the computers or the computer systems of
financial institutions such as banks,
and law firms, top-secret laboratories and multimillion-dollar companies.
Wow.
Now the question we’re all wondering is why in the world would he... they want
to hack into these big companies, into the computer systems.
Well, we’ll tell you about that in a little bit.
But stay with us because we want you to see how important this is.
In a world filled with big secrets, this team with McOmie and Dickerson and
Jones,
they have the tactics and the tools to send chills down the spine of any
security professional.
Now let’s go back to that sentence for a minute, Chip.
There are a lot of words there we could define.
There are.
The first word is the word:
tatics.
That’s one of the words in our Word Bank today.
Uh, and a tactic is a move or an action that you would take in order to achieve
a goal.
So in a game one team might have better tactics at winning than another team.
Good example.
And another word I often think of is the word:
strategy.
They’re pretty similar.
Tactics and strategy.
And you might have tactics if you’re at war and you are trying to win a war
against another country.
I... I hope you have some good tactics.
I would hope so.
Yes.
Well, another word that we could look at here is chills.
And it’s with the whole phrase:
chills down the spine of something.
We’ll define spine in a second.
But if you get chills down your spine, that’s kind of like you’re very cold.
And if you’re ever in a country where they have a lot of snow or cold weather,
you will probably get the chills at some point,
which means your body kind of shakes from the cold feeling.
Right.
Another word we might use is shivers.
You might shiver,
which is a small shake in your muscles.
And so that’s what chills are.
And your spine as you can see in your Word Bank, your spine is your backbone.
The major bones that make up your backbone or your spine.
And so sometimes if you are afraid or chilled,
you’re a little cold,
you’ll have chills going down your spine.
So when... what... what does it mean, this phrase mean... in the article for
chills to go down your spine?
That’s a good question, Chip.
I think what our author is trying to say is if...
Let’s say you own a multibillion-dollar company,
and you think your computer systems are very safe.
But then you realize that these guys have the tools and the tactics to break
into your computers.
That would probably make you feel very afraid and it... it would send chills
down your spine.
Ooh... yes.
I think so.
And chills down the spine of any security professional.
Anybody who’s in... who’s a professional security person.
It would... these guys would scare those people.
Exactly.
So that’s a great phrase to learn. You could also use it if you’re reading a
scary book or watching a scary movie.
Well, we’re going to go to the Chat Room right now.
The Chat Room never sends chills down my spine.
I always enjoy it.
So let’s go there now and then we’ll take a break.
Hi, everyone.
Welcome to the Chat Room.
I’m Brandon.
And I’m Ken.
It’s great to have you back for a chat, Brandon.
Thanks, Ken.
So have you ever been involved in a top-secret project?
A top-secret project?
What do you mean?
I’m talking about a project that hardly anyone else knows about,
something that is so important that only certain people can know about it.
For example, today’s lesson mentions top-secret laboratories.
These are laboratories where classified information is being researched.
So only certain people can know what is going on in these types of places.
Uh, classified information?
Is that what’s in the classified ads?
No, Ken.
Classified means available to authorized person’s only.
The government holds many classified documents that only certain officials can
look at.
Oh, I see.
(Chinese).
So we shouldn’t tell people secrets, right?
Well, telling someone a secret in private and telling someone a secret in front
of others are quite different.
If you’re with a group of people and you lean over and tell someone a secret,
then the others around you may feel like you’re talking about them.
So it’s impolite to tell secrets in front of others?
That’s right, Ken.
But it is OK, of course, to have other types of secrets.
If you’re planning a surprise birthday party for your friend,
then it’s really best if you keep it a secret because you don’t want your friend
to find out about the party.
So if I tell a secret,
it needs to be for good reason,
and I should avoid telling a secret to someone while others are around.
You got it, Ken.
(Chinese).
Well, I won’t keep this a secret.
It’s time for a break.
Don’t go away because Studio Classroom will be right back.
