Welcome back to Studio Classroom Worldwide, everyone.
My name is Steve.
And we are looking a Technology article called:
Hackers to the Rescue?
Now it is good to know that not all people who have the ability to break into
our computers are out to steal our money and cause mischief.
Dan Kaminsky is a great example.
We’ll learn why many think he’s a superhero after we glance at a few new words.
The first is journalist as in:
The journalist was not satisfied with my answers.
He wasn’t getting the story he wanted.
And the second is unsong.
The Goalie was the unsung hero of that soccer game.
His team wouldn’t have won without him.
Our final reading for this lesson begins on page forty-three.
Follow along with us now as we read.
Hackers to the Rescue?
Instead, Kaminsky quietly worked with major Internet companies to find a
solution to the problem.
He is often credited for saving the Internet as we know it.
Some journalists called him a superhero without a leotard.
White Hat hackers are the unsung heroes of the Information Age.
Though he once experimented with the darker side of computer hacking, Luke
McOmie says he now enjoys helping people.
”Growing up and having two sons changed me and made me more responsible,” McOmie
says.
”I still get to face tough hacking challenges, but now I do it for good
reasons.”.
Well, I’m glad to know that Dan Kaminsky did the right thing with the
information he had.
Instead of selling the information to people who would use it in the wrong way,
he quietly worked with major Internet companies to find a solution to the
problem.
So he worked with probably, I’m just guessing, companies like Yahoo or Google.
They’re the major Internet companies.
And they came up with a solution.
That’s right.
If he had not quietly worked with these Internet companies,
then I’m sure Black Hat hackers would have used this flaw in the DNS protocol to
make a lot of money.
He’s kind of like a superman of the Internet because he is often credited for
saving the Internet as we know it.
Wow.
What an amazing honor!
And if you would like to learn more about this sentence pattern, let’s go now to
Grammar on the Go.
Hello, friends.
How are you doing today?
My name is Liz.
And it’s time for Grammar on the Go.
I’m waiting for a friend of mine who works as a White Hat hacker.
I have some online security questions to ask him,
but he’s a little busy right now.
So while I’m waiting for him, why don’t we take a look at today’s grammar tip
sentence?
He is often credited for saving the Internet as we know it.
Now there are other ways to say the sentence.
For example:
He is famous for saving the Internet or maybe he is known for saving the
Internet.
But if you want to emphasize how an individual’s accomplishment is what makes
him well-known,
you could use ”to credit” instead.
For example:
Alexander Graham Bell is often credited for inventing the telephone.
Or:
The security guard caught the thief and is now credited for stopping the
burglary.
OK.
If you like to see some more example sentences, you’ll find them in today’s
grammar tip in your Studio Classroom magazine.
Oh, and there is my White hacker friend over there.
That means I’d better go asking my questions.
So this is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off.
See you next time.
Thank you, Liz.
Our article says that some journalists did, in fact, call this man a superhero,
uh, like Superman or Batman or something like that.
Exactly.
He is a superhero without a leotard.
Now first let’s talk about what leotard is. We’ll go back to journalists in a
minute.
But if you’ve ever been in gymnastics or ballet or if you’re a dancer, maybe you
worn a leotard.
My guess is that Chip has probably never worn a leotard.
I don’t think I’ve ever worn a Leonid.
You’re correct.
Yeah.
Yeah.
This is a... a very tight, one-piece, fitting garment.
And usually guys aren’t very eager to put a leotard on.
But girls who might... maybe dancers would wear one of these.
And definitely superheroes wear them.
It’s that tight, fitting costumes they wear.
And so he is the superhero but without a leotard.
That’s right.
That’s what journalists have called him.
And a journalist is... a writer of a magazine, or even a newspaper might be
referred to as a journalist,
uh, somebody who writes articles for these types of periodicals.
Exactly. And if you’re a journalist, that means you probably study journalism in
college.
Or you took a... a journalism class at some point.
And so that’s a... a useful word,
especially if you like to write.
Well, we... moving on in our article,
we see that White Hat hackers are the unsung heroes of the Information Age.
And Chip, what is an unsung hero?
What does that mean?
Well, that word unsong, you can think of as unrecognized.
And usually a hero is someone who should be recognized and honored as a hero,
praised as a hero.
But here White Hat hackers are the unsung heroes of this Information Age,
and which means that maybe they don’t usually get the praise and the honor that
they deserve.
Definitely.
Because a lot of us don’t even know who these guys are.
We have no idea that they have helped us so much.
So they are unsong heroes.
I think maybe that’s part of the reason we’re writing this lesson,
so you will be aware of some of these men and women who are helping us in this
Information Age we live in.
That’s right.
If it were not for these White Hat hackers, a lot of my personal information
would...
and probably a lot of my money would be stolen right now.
Same here.
Now yesterday we met a great hacker named Luke McOmie.
He is a Whaite Hat hacker.
So he tries to help people out.
But we find out here at the end of our lesson that at one point, he was
experimenting with the darker side of computer hacking,
which I think, Chip, means he was trying to do things that would help himself
but hurt other people.
That’s right.
It sounds like he tried or experimented just a little bit with the darker side
or maybe the more criminal side of computer hacking.
And fortunately, he realized that criminal side was not for him.
He would rather use his skills, his tactics and his tools to help people rather
than steal from people.
Excellent.
Well, another thing, another reason maybe he wants to help people is because
he’s grown up now,
and he has two sons and he’s a father.
So of course he’s learned a little bit about responsibility.
An he says having children has changed him.
And he still gets to um, do what he loves, but he’s doing it to help people.
That’s right.
He still gets to face the same challenges, only now he faces them legally.
He’s given permission and actually invited to take these challenges on.
Well, this has been very inspiring.
I’m glad there are good hackers out there.
And I hope that more hackers will become White Hat hackers.
We need to visit the Chat Room right now.
Don’t go away.
Welcome to the Chat Room.
Brandon is joining us once again today.
Hi, Brandon.
Hi, Ken.
Hi, everyone.
So what are we chatting about today?
Why don’t we talk about age?
Are you sure you want to let people know how old you are?
No, not that age.
I noticed in today’s lesson the term:
Information Age.
What does this mean?
Good question, Ken.
The Information Age is talking about a modern time period.
During this period, there has been a lot of information available,
especially through the use of computers.
So age can refer to a time period?
That’s right, Ken.
And of course it also refers to how old someone is,
like I mentioned earlier.
Right.
Are there other usages for this word ”age”?
Well, if someone is aging, that simply means that the person is getting older.
Age is used as a verb here.
So can I say my baby boy is aging?
No.
We use aging with older adults to describe the physical decline that starts to
take place in mid-adulthood.
I see.
(Chinese).
Also, if someone has come of age, then that person has reached an age of
maturity.
This phrase is an idiom.
So several usages:
Age can refer to a time period, how old a person is, or even a person’s level of
maturity.
(Chinese).
And here’s someone who never seems to age.
Michelle.
(Music).
Hi, everyone.
I’m Michelle.
(Chinese).
And that’s all for today’s Language Tips.
Take care and bye-bye.
(Music).
OK, thank you, Michelle.
I like the second Talk About It question, friends.
What other kinds of skills could be used for both good and evil?
Why not use this thought-provoking question to start a conversation with a
friend in English?
Tomorrow we have our monthly Animal Tale story.
Don’t miss it.
Until then,
everyone here at Studio Classroom Worldwide wishes you a great day.
Bye-bye, everyone.
(Music).
