Hello, friends.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Hey, it’s Friday.
That’s good news, right?
We’re glad you could join us for our second day of Podcasting Power.
Podcasts now of course are not limited just to the world of audio.
Video podcasts are rising in popularity.
Especially now that there are portable media players that can support and play
video files.
If you don’t have a portable device, you can always look at video podcasts over
your home computer.
Now getting back to the lesson, we should preview a few words.
The first is the word:
equipment.
There’s a lot of expensive equipment such as lights and cameras in that studio.
The second word is the verbal phrase:
hook up,
as in:
Before you can watch this movie, you need to hook up the DVD player to the TV.
Now let’s open our magazines to page thirty-six and follow the reading on line
one.
Podcasting Power.
Make a podcast.
Like blogs, podcasts are an easy way to share your opinions, knowledge or
interests with others.
To make one, however, you’ll need some equipment:
a microphone you can hook up to a computer and audio software.
Once you’ve made an MP3 file, find a podcasting website to host it,
such as Podcast Alley or Podcast.om.
Share your podcasts web address with friends, and they can subscribe to you
podcasts.
Hi, friends.
I’m Rachel.
And I’m Chip.
And I’m Chelsea.
And yesterday we learned a lot of great information about podcasts and what they
are.
And today we’re going to look more specifically about how to make your own
podcast.
Well, I think some of you probably would love to have your own podcast someday.
And it’s becoming easier and easier to do this.
So if you are interested in being a podcaster, stay tuned because we have a lot
of helpful information for you.
Our article compares podcasts to blogs.
It’s a lot like a blog,
where people have a personal blog; they’re getting their information out there
for other people to see.
Podcasts are a lot like blogs.
Yes. And in the same way,.
podcasts are a great place for you to share your opinions or your knowledge or
your interests with other people.
I know everybody has something important to say,
and what better place to do it than on a blog or even a podcast?
Definitely.
Now one of my favorite podcasts is actually a health podcast.
And it’s to help people eat well, exercise well, and just be well overall.
And the person who does the podcast really achieve... has achieved a really good
health.
And I know that he just wants to share with others.
He’s so enthusiastic about being healthy that he wants to share it with others.
And now his podcast is so popular.
He never would’ve imagined that so many people were interested in his opinion.
It sounds like these podcasts are pretty simple, pretty easy to make.
It sounds like you only need a little bit of equipment.
And it’s equipment that’s not very difficult to find.
Yes.
Equipment is a noun that refers to a set of tools or devices that are used for a
particular purpose.
We use equipment all the time.
You might have some computer equipment at home or...
Sports equipment.
Sports equipment.
Yes.
Equipment is a very useful word.
We use it with a lot of things.
Anytime that you uh, are maybe playing a sport or you are performing a service,
you probably need some sort of the equipment.
Even here in the television studio, we have a lot of equipment like cameras and
microphones.
And there are so many things you need.
But with podcasting, you just need a couple of things.
You don’t need a lot of equipment.
Sure.
The first piece of equipment is you simply need a microphone.
Uh, but not just any microphone.
A microphone that you can hook up to your computer.
The term hook up there is a phrasal verb,
and it means to connect something to a source of power.
You’ll have to be able to maybe pluck it in so the it works.
Right.
So you hook it up to a computer and audio software.
And once you have made that connection, once you have connected, then you can
make your MP3 file.
Find a podcasting website to host it and you’re good to go.
People will start listening to your podcast.
Now I’m really curious about what some of these podcasting website hosts are.
I’m not very familiar with this topic,
so I’m hoping that maybe Rachel and Chip can tell me a little bit more.
Well, I have been to some of these sites and they’re just uh, a big site with
all the different podcasts.
Then I guess if they accept your podcast, then people can go to these sites and
find your podcast easily.
And it’s kind of like advertising in a way.
It’s getting your name out there and because these websites are so popular,
hopefully that’s... that will get the ball rolling.
And as the article said yesterday,
there are many, many different kinds of podcasts available on these websites.
Wow.
So it’s that easy.
You just have to have a little bit of equipment and your computer and a topic
that you care about and that you want to share with other people,
and you can create your own podcast.
Anybody can do it.
Definitely.
I should mention though that you should invest in a good microphone.
Not just one you can hook up to a computer but one that has good sound quality.
I... I have to admit, if... if I listen to podcast and the sound is pretty bad
and it’s not very clear,
I don’t usually listen again.
So it’s good to invest in... in nice equipment if you’re really serious about
making podcasts.
But there’s another thing you need to do, right?
You need to share the address, the web address with your friends.
Sure.
You want to get that address out there so that your friends can listen to the
podcast that you have created.
Well, I’m very excited about this.
And I don’t know yet what my podcast would be about.
There are so many different things I like and I would like to share.
I would have to think about it for a while first though.
Me too.
I think it would be easy to do maybe one or two podcasts on a certain subject.
But to keep it up week after week, that would take a lot of creativity.
And I know some podcasters are now doing this as a full-time job.
So it’s turned into a full-time job for some people.
Well, we have much more to learn about and why... why in the world we would even
want to do podcasts.
But first we need to take a break.
Hi, friends.
Welcome to the Chat Room.
Today we’d like to welcome Linda back to the Chat Room.
Hi, Linda.
Hi, Ken.
Hi, everyone.
It’s really nice to be back with you all today.
So Ken, do you subscribe to any podcasts?
You mean I would pay for them, right?
Right.
You would have a subscription to them.
Well, not to a podcast, but I subscribe to a newspaper.
So can I say I have a one-year subscription to a newspaper?
I receive it regularly.
Perfect.
And another way to use ”subscribe” is if you agree or support what someone says,
then you can subscribe to that person’s point of view.
(Chinese).
And then there is prescription.
Right.
That is what your doctor gives you when you’re sick.
A prescription.
And she prescribes the medicine.
OK.
Any other uses?
Well, if you write down the laws or... make rules for something, we can say
you... prescribe them.
That’s another usage.
Got it.
(Chinese).
And a break is what we prescibe for tired students.
So let’s take one rightnow.
