Hi, everyone.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
We are on our second day of our PROFILE article discussing Emma Roberts.
Yes, Emma is related to the famous actress, Julia Roberts.
But she’s proving to be a talented Hollywood actress in her own right.
These last few years, Emma has been busy with one film role after another.
Let’s find out what some of those films were after we peek at the Word Bank.
The first key word is version.
Which version of the story did you enjoy most:
the book, the play or the movie?
Second is the adjective:
stray,
as in:
Melissa started a local organization that helps stray cats and dogs find good
homes.
Now if you would, please open your magazines to page twenty-six and follow as we
read beginning in the right-hand column.
Emma Roberts.
Film success.
In 2006, Emma returned to the big screen in Aquamarine as a girl who found a
mermaid in a swimming pool.
Then in 2007, she played her biggest role yet - teenage detective Nancy Drew, in
the film version of the best-selling mystery novels.
Earlier this year, Emma starred in the movie Hotel for Dogs in which she and her
little brother opened a shelter for stray dogs.
Emma also appeared in two independent films this year,
both of which premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
Hi, friends.
I’m Rachel.
And I’m Chip. And you’re joining us for our second day of our PROFILE article
this month.
We’ve been talking about Emma Roberts.
And she is not just uh, famous because of her famous aunt, Julie Roberts.
Emma Roberts has established herself as a person, as an actress, with some real
talent of her own.
She sure has.
And she’s become quite well-known now throughout Hollywood and in America and
even in other parts of the world.
So let’s talk a little bit about her film success.
Now in the year 2006, Emma returned to the big screen in Aquamarine as a girl
who found a mermaid in a swimming pool.
Chip, what do we mean when we talk about the big screen?
Well, when we’re talking about the big screen,
the big screen is usually we think of as the... a movie,
um, some kind of motion picture that they show in a theater on the big screen.
Right.
So we enjoy watching movies on the big screen, right?
It’s always fun to go and watch a movie in a theater.
So she returned to the big screen in this particular movie,
and she found a mermaid in a swimming pool.
Well, this is the role she played.
We’re going to stop on that simply because the word mermaid is one of our More
Information words.
A mermaid is half woman, half fish.
Maybe you’ve seen the cartoon The Little Mermaid.
If so, you’ve seen a mermaid.
Right. A mermaid is not a real species of person or animal.
It’s an imaginary uh, creature or a make-believe creature from some fairy tales.
Good point.
Well, in two thousand and seven, Emma played her biggest role yet - the teenage
detective Nancy Drew.
Her biggest role yet.
We’re going to talk more about that role.
But first let’s go to Liz with some Grammar on the Go.
Hi there, friends.
Greetings from the sunny Southern California.
My name is Liz.
And it’s time for Grammar on the Go.
We’ve been talking about Emma Roberts,
a young famous movie actress.
And so speaking of movies, here I am, standing in front of the famous Legends of
Hollywood Mural on Hollywood Boulevard.
It’s really cool to see the pictures of all these famous actors and actresses on
the wall.
But before I go off to take a closer look, here’s the grammar tip sentence for
today.
Then in 2007, she played her biggest role yet - teenage detective Nancy Drew...
Notice the word:
yet.
It means ”at this time” or ”up to the present”.
You most likely are familiar with the phrase:
not yet.
Like when someone asks you if something is ready or not and you want to let them
know that it’s not ready at the time they’re asking,
you would say:
Not yet.
But ”yet” doesn’t always have to be used with the negative.
In the case of today’s grammar tip sentence, we see that ”yet” can be used to
describe how something is up to now.
So another way to say today’s sentence would be:
Then in 2007, she played her biggest role up to now - teenage detective Nancy
Drew.
And here’s some other examples sentences using ”yet”.
Last week, the Thompson family received the best news yet - Mrs. Thompson’s test
results showed that she does not have cancer.
Or:
Stanley ate forty hotdogs in ten minutes at the school carnival; this is the
school’s fastest record yet.
Well friends, if you like to see some more example sentences,
you’ll find them in today’s grammar tip in your Studio Classroom magazine.
That’s all the time we have for today.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off in Hollywood. Bye-bye.
Thanks, Liz.
Well, before we were talking about Emma Roberts starring in her biggest role yet
as detective Nancy Drew.
Now this is the film version of the best-selling mystery novels.
Now a film version is what exactly, Rachel?
Well, it just means that there used to be or there was a written work first, the
books, the novels were quite popular.
And then the film came out with their own version of it.
And so basically this happens quite often actually.
A book is written and then a movie is made based on the book.
So it’s a new form of the story.
It’s now an movie form and... and that’s great.
I... I grew up reading Nancy Drew,
so maybe I’ll have to watch this movie.
Now earlier this year, our article says that Emma starred in the movie Hotel for
Dogs,
in which she and her little brother opened a shelter for stray dogs.
Now a stray dog is a dog that uh, wanders around the streets.
It probably doesn’t have an owner and it doesn’t really have a home.
So sometimes these dogs end up in shelters,
where they can stay and be taken care of.
So in this movie, they... she and her brother opened up the shelter for the
stray dogs.
And I think it’s a pretty touching movie from what I’ve heard.
Let’s talk about another movie she appeared in.
She also appeared in, oh, two independent films this year,
both of which premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
Now if you’ve never heard of the Sundance Film Festival, it’s... it’s kind of an
independent festival.
It features independent films which are what?
Well, independent films are films that are not created or produced by well-known
movie companies.
So they’re more independent,
and they’re not relying on these major motion picture companies to produce them.
And so this festival features these independent films.
And our... our author refers... or calls this festival prestigious,
which just means it’s well-respected, well-known.
And I think uh, you know, even if they’re... the films are produced by a big
company, often they are well-respected if it’s a good film.
It can premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
So it sounds like Emma has been pretty busy making movies lately.
Now we’re going to take a break and continue learning about Emma Roberts.
But first we’re going to watch a skit.
Stay tuned.
Hi, Emma.
Remember me? I used to sit next to you in class!
Oh, yeah, that’s right!
You wanted to be taller.
And you are.
And you wanted to be an actress, and you are.
Yeah.
Have you seen any of my movies?
Yes.
You found a mermaid in a swimming pool.
That’s funny.
Do you know my biggest role?
Hmm, it’s a mystery.
You’re the great detective Nancy Drew.
Yep.
Thanks.
And I’m pretty good with animals too.
Yes, you are.
You starred in Hotel for Dogs.
I love that movie,
and so does my dog.
He must be a stray.
You’re right.
So what roles will you take on next?
I want to transition from children’s roles to more adult roles.
You will do that effortlessly.
I’m sure you’ll have a bright future.
Oh.
Well, thanks.
Meanwhile, I’m hitting the books.
You’re going back to school?
What about another movie?
I’ll keep my eyes open.
After all, I want to be a Hollywood heir.
Yeah. And I want to be a millionaire.
