And this month’s PROFILE article highlights the talented young actress and
singer, Emily Osment.
Who is Emily?
Well, if you’re a fan of the Disney Channel’s hit TV show Hannah Montana,
you’ll be familiar with the character Lilly, Hannha’s best friend.
That’s Emily.
Now, not many people know this, but Emily had a budding acting career before
Hannah Montana.
So for this, the first half of the lesson, let’s get a little background
information on Emily Osment, and see where she got her start.

Emily Osment - Disney’s Newest Rising Star.
Hannah Montana’s best friend is finding her own voice.
In the past, those familiar with Emily Osment knew her simply as child star
Haley Joel Osment’s little sister.
These days, however, audiences know her as Lilly Truscott on Disney’s hit series
Hannah Montana.
A family of actors.
Having an actor for a father means Emily has acting in her blood.
Not surprisingly, she landed her first acting role at the young age of 6 in a TV
commercial.
After appearing in several more commercials, Emily made her movie debut in the
1999 film The Secret Life of Girls.

And I’m Chip. And thanks for joining us for our first day as we’re looking at
our PROFILE article this month.
Today we’re going to be talking about the life of Emily Osment.
And our article calls her Disney’s newest rising star. Now if you’re a rising
star,
that means that you are probably already someone who is famous, but your fame is
growing - it’s increasing.
And we can certainly say this about Emily Osment.
I like the deck. Here it says, Hannah Montana’s best friend is finding her own
voice.
You might be familiar with Hannah Montana, that television show. It’s very, very
popular.
And she is of course one character in the Hannah Montana show. And she is
finding her own voice. She’s becoming her own person.
She’s learning that she has skills and talents apart from that show.
All right and jumping into our article,
we start off by saying that in the past, those familiar with Emily Osment knew
her simply as child star Healy Joel Osment’s little sister.
So if you’ve heard of Emily Osment in the past, then you might have known her to
be the sister of someone famous.
And maybe you’ve seen her brother, Haley Joel Osment, in some movies. He became
very famous after his role in the movie The Sixth Sense.
He, in fact, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for that show.
And he’s a very talented individual, so you can probably already guess that
Emily is going to be talented as well.
Right. And this is Haley’s little sister, so that’s kind of how she was known
initially.
However, audiences know her right now as Lilly Truscott on Disney’s hit series
Hannah Montana.
Now if we call this a series, then we’re talking about a... uh, a TV series or a
television program where the stories fit together or they connect in some way.
Isn’t that right, Chelsea?
That’s absolutely right. And these stories often have the same characters who
appear on them every single day.
And these series often run for many, many years.
I know one series that has expanded into even more than one show is CSI, Crime
Scene Investigation.
That’s a very popular TV series.
So Hannah Montana is also a very popular television series. In fact, it’s so
popular that here it’s called ”a hit series”.
And if something is a hit, that just means it is popular. It’s becoming famous
and it’s one of the best of its kind.
All right. It is a hit.
Well, moving on, let’s talk about her family, Emily Osment’s family.
And we have here a family of actors.
She has an actor for a father, which means that Emily has acting in her blood.
Now, if you have something in your blood, that’s one way of saying that you have
a special ability or a natural ability to do something.
And often when you have a special ability in your blood,
that means that you probably have that same ability in your family or in the
history of your family.
So in this case, she gets her natural acting ability from her father.
And probably also from her brother. So she definitely has acting in her blood.
So not surprisingly, she landed her first acting role at the young age of 6 in a
TV commercial.
It says here that she landed her first acting role. And if you land something,
that means a... you get a position that you are trying to get.
Right. Now you would be... Maybe you might land a job.
That would be after you send in your application.
Maybe after you do an interview with the people that work there in the company,
and then they offer you the job.
That means you landed the job.
So here she’s landed, eh, her first acting role at the young age of 6 in a TV
commercial.
So that was her first appearance, or her debut, on television as a 6-year-old.
And after that, she landed several more roles. She was in several other
commercials.
But it wasn’t until 1999 that Emily made her first movie debut in the film The
Secret Life of Girls.
Now that word ”debut” is talking about that being her very first movie. If
something debuts, that means it happens for the first time.
So it wasn’t until 1999 that she actually starred in a film.
OK. So her first television debut was in a commercial when she was 6 years old.
Then her first movie debut was in 1999 in The Secret Life of Girls.
And I’ve never seen that film, but it sounds like a film that might be very
appropriate for young girls.
And we all know that in this film that Emily is a young girl. She’s remembered
just gotten her start in the acting field.
And so if you’re interested, this might be a movie you could go and check out,
or rent at your local video store.
So she started out on TV at age 6 with a commercial, then filmed many more
commercials until she... had her movie debut in 1999.
So we can tell here that her fame is growing.
She is indeed a rising star, even early in her life.
Well, we’re going to take a break and we’ll come back to learn more about Emily
Osment’s life.

My first movie was Secret Life of Girls.
Oh... a secret, huh? Shh...
I was also in Spy Kids 2.
I remember that! You were Gerti Giggles. Ha, ha...
That role brought me worldwide recognition.
Yeah. That made you famous, Gerti.
My name isn’t really Gerti.
I know! It’s Lilly. You’re Hannah Montana’s best friend. You’re a teenage
superstar.
But my real name is...
So Lilly, has fame and success changed your life?
Yes. Being in the limelight isn’t easy.
It has challenges, but I’m not complaining.
Good for you,Lilly. Wait, my name isn’t Lilly, OK? My name is not Lilly.
