Hi, everyone, welcome back from the break.
Emily Osment is Disney’s newest rising star.
She got her start in acting at the very young age of 6.
And since then, she’s kind of been known as the younger sister of actor Haley
Joel Osment,
who you might remember as the little boy, Cole Sear, in the 1999 thriller ”The
Sixth Sense”.
Then in ”Hannah Montana,” Emily has been living in the shadow of Miley Cyrus,
the show’s star.
But now Emily is finding her own voice and becoming a star in her own right.
Let’s find out more as we pick up the reading on line 16.
Emily Osment.
However, it was the 2002 role of Gerti Giggles in Spy Kids 2 that brought her
worldwide recognition.
But if Spy Kids 2 made her famous, Hannah Montana turned Emily into a teenage
superstar!
With success comes challenges.
Fame and success have brought some changes into the young actress’s life.
She used to attend public school, but now she has a private tutor.
According to Emily, constantly being in the limelight can sometimes be hard.
But with a wide array of ongoing projects, Emily’s not complaining too much!
Welcome back.
Just before the break, we learned that Emily Osment has acting in her blood.
Her father was an actor. Her brother’s an actor.
And at this young age of 6, she started landing roles in television commercials
and eventually landed a role in a movie.
However, it was the 2002 role of Gerti Giggles in Spy Kids 2 that brought her
worldwide recognition.
Now that name ”Gerti Giggles” is pretty cute. If somebody giggles, that means
they are laughing. So she...
I’ve never seen this movie, but maybe she played a girl who liked to laugh a
lot. And this brought her worldwide recognition.
Right. Right. If... And if she is receiving recognition, that means that she is
gaining fame.
And she is gaining worldwide recognition, so this is worldwide fame.
And if you have recognition, that means that people are recognizing you.
When they see you - maybe they see you on TV, they say: Oh, I know that person,
or I know who she is! Her name is Emily Osment.
Our text goes on to say: But if Spy Kids 2 made her famous, Hannah Montana
turned Emily into a teenage superstar.
That, of course, is very, very true. A superstar is a famous person who seems
even more famous than other people in the same activity.
So she seems even more famous than maybe other actors and actresses her age,
because of the recognition she’s getting from this very, very popular television
series, Hannah Montana.
And there are certainly many different kinds of superstars.
You can have superstars in any different field, or any, any number of different
fields, not just in acting roles.
But for example, Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant would be considered basketball
superstars.
Well, we have some More Information for you about the life of Emily Osment.

Wow, Emily Osment sounds like a very interesting person with a lot of
interesting hobbies.
The next section of our text is called: With success comes challenges.
Now this is a lesson that all of us have learned in our lives.
If you want to be successful, it’s going to take some hard work.
And in that hard work, you might run into some challenges or some difficulties.
Success doesn’t just happen overnight.
You don’t just wake up and become successful.
And Emily Osment has clearly learned that lesson.
She has... of course come across some challenges herself in finding success.
Right. And for me, it’s pretty easy for me to think that when I lack sucess or I
fail at things, that’s difficult.
That causes some challenges in my life.
But actually sometimes I forget that actually when I experience success,
there are new types of challenges. And Emily Osment is no exception.
Our article says that fame and success have brought some changes into the young
actress’s life.
And that is to be expected, of course.
She is very well-known. She is very well-recognized, and so a lot of new things
have had to come into her life.
One of those is that she used to attend public school.
That, of course, would be a school where, uh, all the other students in your
community go,
where you have teachers and you go from class to class.
That’s how she used to go to school.
But now she has a private tutor because she’s so busy with acting.
And probably because she’s so recognizable, it gives her some more privacy in
order to... to have a more private life.
Right. I would think if you are a person who is receiving worldwide recognition
and you are, uh, a rising star like Emily Osment,
it would be very difficult to go to school and to have a normal school
experience, um, in a public school.
So yeah, she needs a private tutor.
Now according to Emily, constantly being in the limelight can sometimes be hard.
”In the limelight” is being in the public’s attention, or being the focus of the
public. And that would get difficult.
Uh, you hear celebrity say this often that they just want to kind of live their
own lives in peace, without cameras around them all the time,
without people wondering what they’re doing or what they’re eating for dinner or
where they’re going shopping.
A lot of time celebrities constantly have the public eye on them.
They’re constantly in the limelight.
And this would be very hard, and Emily Osment is no different.
She says that this can be hard at times.
Right. But with a wide array of ongoing projects, Emily is not complaining too
much.
So maybe it is difficult for Emily to be always in the public... uh... eye, in
the attention of the public, or the... the limelight.
But she’s not complaining because she has a wide... er... a wide array, excuse
me, of ongoing projects.
Right. And if you have an array of something, that means you have a huge number
of some things.
So she has a very large number of ongoing projects that keep her busy.
And ongoing projects of course would be projects that take place over maybe
several weeks, several months, maybe even over the course of a year.
It’s ongoing. It keeps going.
And so she has plenty to keep her busy - a very wide array of these projects.
And so she’s not complaining too much.
It sounds like she’s a person who likes to stay busy.
Yeah, and it sounds like if there is a wide array, there’s not only a large
number of these ongoing projects,
but there would be quite a variety of different projects that she’s working on.
Um, now Emily is not complaining too much.
It sounds like even though there are some challenges that come with fame, there
are also some benefits.
We’ll come back tomorrow and learn more about the life of the Emily Osment in

Ken, library is making a short informational video. Do you mind if I ask you a
few questions?
Um, do I have to answer them into the video camera?
Yes, of course.
Sorry, but I’m kind of shy in front of cameras.
I don’t like to have people’s attention on me.
Have people’s attention on you?
Oh, I see.
You don’t like the limelight.
Did I say it incorrectly?
Yes.
Instead, you can say you don’t like the limelight, or you don’t like to be in
the spotlight.
You know, that reminds me of today’s Studio Classroom article about Emily
Osment.
She’s constantly in the limelight.
Yes, she is. The limelight and the spotlight are the same thing.
They refer to the light that shines on a performer.
Someone who is getting a lot of attention from the news media is in the
spotlight.
The famous people like Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Emily Osment are in the
spotlight.
Right. And then there are people who don’t like to be put on the spot.
Put on the spot? I don’t know what you mean.
If someone puts you on the spot, they usually ask you to do something in the
moment without giving you time to prepare.
That’s me! I’m not prepared to answer your questions for the video.
But if I gave you the questions ahead of time, then you could prepare.
Exactly! I feel nervous when I’m put on the spot.
OK. Then I will tell you the questions now, so you can feel more at ease.
Thanks.
You know, I do want to help you out because you always help me.
I’m just doing my job.
