Welcome to Studio Classroom, everyone.
My name is Steve. Thanks for joining us.
We’re going to have some fun today looking at the life of Emily Osment.
She is Disney’s newest rising star.
For years, Emily has been acting in the shadow of others.
Now her own star is taking off and it just keeps getting higher and higher.
You know, when people get involved with acting, especially young people, they
tend to develop problems.
Let’s face it. Being young, being famous and making a lot of money can be a
recipe for disaster.
So how does a young person avoid all those traps of stardom?
Well, having good parents to guide them, like Emily Osment has, helps a lot.
Let’s learn more about Emily’s family on page 46.
Emily Osment.
Her home life.
Emily comes from a close family.
Her parents had decided long ago to help her avoid the difficulties other teen
stars have encountered.
When Emily was 15, her dad decided that driving and dating should wait until
later.
This went against the norm as most of her friends were already doing both.
Her career.
At 18, Emily is driving and dating a little too,
but mostly she’s focusing on her career.
And to Emily’s delight, it is a career that now includes music!
Hi, friends. Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide. I’m Chip.
And I’m Chelsea. Thanks for joining us for our second day of this month’s
PROFILE article,
where we are learning about Disney’s newest rising star.
Now yesterday we were introduced to Emily Osment.
We learned a little bit about her background.
We know that she has acting in her blood because several of her family members
have been actors.
And we also know that with success and with be... being famous comes some
challenges.
But it seems like Emily is doing well and taking on those challenges and
overcoming them in order to be a very well-recognized young actress in
Hollywood.
Right. Yesterday we learned that one of the challenges in her life came with
receiving so much worldwide recognition.
As she was growing in her fame, it became more difficult for her to attend a
public school.
So she got a private tutor to help her with learning and classes.
Now let’s learn a little bit about her home life.
What things are like around Emily’s home?
Well, Emily comes from a close family.
Her parents had decided long ago to help her avoid the difficulties other teen
stars have encountered.
Now I have read many stories, Chip, about teenage stars.
And I know that they are in the limelight a lot and that’s a lot of pressure for
teenagers.
And oftentimes we read stories of where they’ve had a lot of difficulties,
and maybe they’ve gotten into some very bad habits and that has become very
public knowledge.
Right. And that can be terrible for these young child stars.
Our article talks about them encountering these problems and these challenges.
If you encounter something, that means that you meet that something.
Perhaps you’re meeting something that you don’t expect,
and you have to encounter a problem that you didn’t realize was going to be a
problem.
And often after you encounter something, you are changed.
Something about you changes usually after you encounter something.
Well, Emily’s family certainly didn’t want her to have to encounter these
problems that they know exist among a lot of teenage stars,
so they decided to help out and do something about it.
So when Emily was 15 years old,
her dad decided that driving and dating should wait until later.
Now these are both very big privileges for Americans.
Uh, for American students and most, uh, students in America get their driver’s
license when they’re 16, and they really look forward...
I will never forget getting my driver’s license. It was a big deal.
And then...
Yeah.
Also just kind of that idea of being able to date someone.
Those are both very important privileges for teenagers, but Emily’s family said:
No! Not right away.
Right. This would be pretty unusual.
This is not exactly what most people would consider normal.
So we can say that this went against the norm.
Whenever you have the ”norm,” that’s a noun; that’s talking about what most
people consider to be normal.
And if you do decide to use this word ”norm,” make sure you put the word ”the”
in front of it.
This word usually is preceded by the word ”the.” So just a little English usage
tip for you there.
And of course Emily was probably feeling the same way.
She thought: Oh, Dad! These rules that you’re coming up with, that you’re giving
me, go against the norm,
because most of my friends are already doing both of these things.
I could just hear her explaining this to her dad,
maybe trying to convince him that she should be allowed to drive and she should
be allowed to date.
But he probably knew what was best for her and that’s why he set these rules.
Right. Now Chelsea, actually, I... uh... I suppose my parents also went against
the norm when they were raising me.
I know that I was not allowed to date until I was 16 years old also.
So I could not date a girl until I was old enough to drive and that was the rule
in my house.
Right. Now I also had a lot of rules and guidelines that I lived under.
And I’m sure when I was younger, I... I maybe thought those guidelines were
created just to go against the norm and to frustrate me,
when in reality, sometimes going against the norm is a good idea.
And parents know this and they just set rules for their children because they
love them.
Well, now let’s move on and talk a little bit about Emily’s career.
At 18, Emily is driving and dating a little, too.
So now we’ve moved, uh, up until the present time.
We’ve talked about Emily from the time she was 6 years old and then into a young
teen... teenager,
And now, today, right now, Emily is 18 and doing both of these things that she
thought she wouldn’t be able to do a couple years ago - driving and dating.
All right, she’s... So right now she’s driving and dating, but mostly she’s
focusing on her career.
And to Emily’s delight, it is a career that now includes music.
Now when we’re talking about ”delight,” we’re talking about the feeling of
pleasure, or the feeling of happiness.
Delight and joy are the same things.
Now when we’re talking... when we use that phrase, ”to Emily’s delight,” it’s a
little unique.
So let’s check with Liz to see what this phrase means and how to use it.
Then we’ll take a break...
Er... sorry!
Then we’ll visit the Chat Room and then take a break and come back to learn more
about Emily’s life.
Hi, friends. How are you doing today?
My name is Liz and it’s time for Grammar on the Go.
Our article today is about Emily Osment.
And here’s our grammar tip sentence.
And to Emily’s delight, it is a career that now includes music.
This just means that Emily’s career, which now includes music, is something that
Emily is happy about.
Notice how the sentence begins with the phrase ”to Emily’s delight”.
This expression ”to Emily’s delight,” or to someone’s delight,
is a great way to start a sentence if you want to talk about how someone is
happy or delighted because of something.
For example, let’s say Wendy was happy when she came home from work because she
thought that her children had cleaned up the house.
So we can say: To Wendy’s delight, her children had cleaned up the house.
Or suppose Tonya is flying economy class, but the airline upgraded her to
business class.
So we can say: To Tonya’s delight, she was upgraded from economy class and
business class.
We can take the word ”delight” and change it to other emotions like, to one’s
surprise.
For example, to everyone’s surprise, the 4-year-old child played the piano
beautifully.
Or, ”to one’s horror” - to Stella’s horror, her cat knocked over the
300-year-old antique vase.
Now, friends, if you’d like to have a look at a few other example sentences,
you’ll find them in today’s grammar tip section in your Studio Classroom
magazine.
That’s it for today.
But I hope to see you again real soon on the next Grammar on the Go.
Unitl then, this is Liz signing off. Bye-bye.
Ashley, did you see those kids that just left the library?
Yes. What about them?
They were holding hands.
They’re married.
WHAT? They only looked about 18 years old.
Well, they ARE young, but they dated for a really long time.
I’m so glad I’m not a teenager anymore.
I was reading Studio Classroom’s article and it says that Emily Osment’s dad
wanted to help her avoid difficulties that many teen stars encounter.
What kind of difficulties might they be?
Well, teen stars may have more money and more fame, but they’re still teenagers.
And teenagers face a lot of challenges. Let’s find out more from Linda.
OK.
Many teens have to face a lot of negative pressure from their peers.
We call this ”peer pressure”.
The word ”peer” refers to people that are the same age as you.
”Peer pressure” describes the influence that people your age have on the way you
dress, act, or behave.
In high school, teens may feel like they don’t fit in with their friends.
Their friends may pressure them to do drugs, cheat on a test, or break rules.
Many teens will do what they are pressured to do, or conform, in order to be
popular.
Well, I’m so glad I’m not a teenager anymore.
It is a difficult time in life for many people.
I agree.
But, Ashley, wouldn’t you agree that there still peer pressure as you get older?
Yes. Adults have peer pressure as well.
Co-workers may participate in something negative, like complaining about their
job.
And you will feel excluded if you don’t join in.
That’s true. Hey, I never hear you complaining about the library.
Sometimes I do.
But most of the time I have nothing to complain about. I love coming here.
And so do I.
