Hi, friends.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
My name is Steve.
We are traveling through the Iberian Peninsula.
Yesterday we started at the southern tip of Gibraltar.
Today we’re going to jump to the northeast coast and visit a very special region
of Spain called Catalonia.
Catalonia has plenty of mountains and beaches and the richest and most
industrialized part of Spain.
There’s something else, though, that makes this area very, very special.
And we’ll learn what that is after we look at our first key word of the day.
It’s the word:
province.
Quebec is a largely French-speaking province in eastern Canada.
Next is the adjective:
medieval,
as in:
While Sam was in Europe, he toured several villages that dated back to medieval
times.
OK. Time to open your magazines to page sixteen.
Please follow as we read starting at the top of the right-hand column.
The Iberian Peninsula.
Catalonia, Spain.
One of the most unique regions in all of the Iberian Peninsula is Catalonia,
Spain, with its own culture, cuisine and language - Catalan.
Located along Spain’s northeastern coastline, Catalonia consists of four
provinces,
including the regional capital city of Barcelona.
At one time, around one thousand castles stood in Catalonia.
Though many now lie in ruins, several of the remaining castles still stand
around Barcelona.
One such piece of history is Montjuic Castle,
a medieval castle that houses two museums and offers impressive views of the
city and harbor below.
Hi, friends.
I’m Chip.
And I’m Esther. And we’re so glad you joined us for our travel article.
Now we’re on day two of talking about the Iberian Peninsula.
Now remember yesterday we talked about what a peninsula is.
Chip, can you help us review and tell us what it is?
Well, a peninsula is a body of land that’s surrounded on three sides by water.
And the Iberian Peninsula we... we said yesterday is a melting pot of different
cultures and different uh... um... styles of... of... of people groups.
So it’s a... it’s a melting pot where several different cultures are coming
together and sharing space.
And yesterday we talked about how this Iberian Peninsula is made up of Spain and
Portugal and a small part of France and Andorra and... Gibraltar.
But today we’re going to talk about Catalonia, Spain.
And this is the part of the Iberian Peninsula that we’re going to focus on right
now.
And it sounds like this is one of the most unique regions in the Iberian
Peninsula.
Catalonia, Spain.
And one of the reasons is because it has its own unique culture cuisine, which
is types of food, and language.
And together they call this Catalan.
Now where is it located or where is Catalonia, Spain?
Well, our text says:
It’s located along Spain’s northeastern coastline.
And the coastline is the area of land that is by water.
So by the ocean.
And it’s in northeastern part of Spain.
And our article says that Catalonia consists of or it includes or it contains
four provinces,
including the regional capital city of Barcelona.
So Barcelona is an area and it’s a city, um, and it’s one of these provinces.
Now province is one of our vocabulary words.
Esther, what is a province?
Well, a country can be divided into provinces or states.
And it’s just one of the many areas that a country is divided.
So for example, Canada, where I’m from, is divided into provinces.
How about... Chip, how about the United States?
Well, the United States doesn’t have provinces.
It has states.
So yes, Canada has provinces.
And Australia is another country, actually a continent, that has provinces.
Well, at one time in Catalonia, there were around one thousand castles.
So this is a place where there is a lot of history.
Many wars were fought here.
Many different types and groups of people owned this land.
So that’s why there are so many different... castles at one time.
But now although many of these castles now lie in ruins...
This means that you can’t see them because they are buried under the ground.
Several of the remaining castles still stand around Barcelona.
And it sounds like one of these famous uh, castles or one such piece of history
is called the Montjuic Castle,
which is a medieval castle that houses two museums and offers impressive views
of the city and the harbor or the water below.
And now we’re going to look at that Grammer on the Go sentence with Liz uh,
right now.
And then we’ll come back and talk about that word:
medieval.
Let’s see what Liz has to say.
Hello, friends.
From the capital city of Catalonia, this is Liz with Grammar on the Go.
Welcome to Barcelona.
I’m standing in front of the Barcelona Art Museum.
Isn’t it a gorgeous building?
I’m sure what’s inside is just as magnificent.
Can’t wait to go see the artwork.
But before I go in, here’s the grammar tip sentence for today.
One such piece of history is Montjuic Castle...
Today we’re looking at the word:
such.
It can be used in several different ways.
But in the way it’s used in today’s sentence, ”such” is an adjective that means
”of this kind”.
So today’s sentence just means:
One of this kind of castle or piece of history is Montjuic Castle.
Of course, we could just say:
An example of this kind of castle is Montjuic Castle.
But if you want to sound more formal, consider using ”such,” like the way we see
it used in today’s grammar tip sentence.
And here are some other examples sentences.
Bradley believes there is no such thing as a free lunch; everything comes with a
price.
Or how about this:
We need a secretary who can speak English, Chinese and Japanese; where can we
find such a person?
If you like to see some other examples sentences, you’ll find them in today’s
grammar tip section in your Studio Classroom magazine.
Time for me to check out the Barcelona Art Museum.
Thanks for joining.
This is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off in Barcelona. See you next time.
Thank you, Liz.
So what is a medieval castle? Or specifically, what does the word medieval
means?
Well, it is a period of time from one thousand to one thousand five hundred
A.D..
And lots of history occured during this time.
So you can see this... famous medieval castle very close to Barcelona.
Now Chip, if you visit Barcelona or Catalonia, what would you like to see?
Well, I think this castle sounds very interesting.
And actually, medieval castles are very interesting places or buildings, I guess
you would call them, to see,
because they’re very old and they’re very large and very unique.
We don’t have very many castles here in Asia or in America.
Well, let’s talk more about Barcelona after we take this break.
