Welcome back, everyone.
Before the break, we learned that Catalonia once had hundreds and hundreds of
castles.
This helps us to understand where the name Catalonia came from.
While there are a few different theories, the most accepted suggests that the
name comes from the term:
land of castles.
OK.
So Catalonia is famous for its castles,
but it also has a few famous churches as well.
Our next Word Bank sentence is awe-inspiring.
And our example sentence reads:
Beethoven wrote some of the most awe-inspiring music of all time.
Our next key word is the adjective:
ongoing,
as in:
The project is ongoing and may not be finished for another year.
OK. We’ll resume our lesson now.
Please follow in the top left-hand column of page seventeen.
The Iberian Peninsula.
No trip to Barcelona is complete without seeing La Sagrada Familia.
The city’s awe-inspiring church that has been under construction since 1882.
Barcelona’s favorite son and famous architect, Antoni Gaudi directed the project
for forty years, until his death in 1926.
With construction ongoing, it is hoped that the church will be completed in time
for the one hundredth anniversary of Gaudi’s death in 2026.
”The Pride of Spain”.
Don’t leave Catalonia without sampling Spain’s legendary ham,
Jamon Iberico de Bellota.
The ham is produced mainly from Iberian black pigs whose diet consists mostly of
acorns,
which give the meat its rich, nutty flavor.
OK.
Welcome back.
We’re talking about the Iberian Peninsula and some of the places that you can
visit.
Now our article says that no trip to Barcelona is complete without seeing...
and this is a... might be a difficult word for you to read or for you to
pronounce,
but I think it’s called La Sagrada Familia,
which is the city’s... uh, a very interesting church in the city.
Now uh, interesting is not the word that our article uses, is it, Esther?
No.
In fact, our article uses this word:
awe-inspiring.
If something is awe-inspiring, it makes you feel like you want to do something
or makes you feel very great and wonderful.
So this church, the La Sagrada Familia, this is from Spanish,
and this church has been around for a long time, hasn’t it, Chip?
It sounds like it has.
It was under construction in or it’s... it’s been under construction since 1882.
So over a hundred years old, this construction has been happening.
And who was the... architect of this church?
Well, our article says it’s Bocelona’s favorite son and famous architect,
Antoni Gaudi.
Now favorite son is a special term we use to talk about a most loved or very
popular person from a... an area of land, a region.
And it sounds like he directed the... this uh, construction project on this
church for forty years,
until he then died in 1926.
So with construction ongoing, uh, which is one of our Word Bank words,
it is hoped that the church will be completed in time for the hundredth
anniversary of Gaudi’s death in 2026.
Now let’s define this word:
ongoing.
You can find two words in it, can’t you?
”On” and ”going”.
If something is ongoing, it means it’s continuing; it keeps going on.
So this construction of this church has been ongoing since 1882 and probably
won’t be finished until 2026.
OK. So Gaudi died in 1926.
So his... the hundredth anniversary of his death would be in 2026.
So they hope to have this ongoing construction finished by then.
Well, let’s move on to our last section today,
which is titled ”The Pride of Spain,” and this is in quotation marks,
because people call what we’re going to be talking about the Pride of Spain.
It’s something that Spain is very, very proud of.
It’s something that makes Spain famous.
And what is this, Chip?
Uh, well, it sounds like this is a special food, OK?
Now our articles says you don’t leave Catalonia without sampling Spain’s
legendary ham.
Now legendary means that people have talked about it for years so much that it
is almost a legend.
And this ham is called - I hope I say this right - Jamon Iberico de Bellota.
Wow.
Well, this ham is produced mainly from Iberian black pigs whose diet consists
mostly of acorns, which gives the meat a rich, nutty flavor.
So this is a different and special kind of pig - black pigs,
not your regular meat.
And they eat acorns.
Now what are acorns, Chip?
Well, acorns, actually we have a lot of acorns in...er.. around my home in
America.
Oak trees um, have a nut every year called an acorn.
And so acorns are the nuts or the fruit of an oak tree.
And it sounds like because these pigs eat the acorns that the acorns give their
meat, this pork a special nutty flavor.
Right.
So this will taste very different from other types of pork because it is very
rich and also has a nutty flavor or a nutty taste.
Well, now let’s watch a video to learn more about Catalonia.
Then we’ll visit the Chat Room and take a break.
Barcelona, a city steeped in history, prosperous, and open to all cutural
trends.

which has become one of the symbols of the city.
The most significant work of this great artist and visionary is The Sacred
Family as yet unfinished and the tasty appearance of a fantasy scene.

Welcome to today’s edition of the Chat Room.
I’m Brandon.
And I’m Ken.
Hi, Brandon.
It’s nice to have you back today.
So what would you like to chat about?
Well Ken, I think we should continue our conversation about travel.
And I would like to get your thoughts on travel, Ken.
Do you like to travel?
Sure. I love to travel.
I like to see all the beautiful sites.
How about you?
I love to travel too, Ken.
I’m always on the go.
On the go?
What do you mean?
Oh, I just mean that I’m always going to different places.
This is a good idiom to use when you are going from place to place and you’re
really busy.
For example, if you have a lot of different places that you have to go to today,
then you might say that today you are on the go.
So if you’re not very busy going from place to place, then would you say that
you’re on the stop?
Ah, no, Ken, no.
You wouldn’t say that.
If you don’t travel very much, you might say:
You’re staying put.
I see.
(Chinese).
I am staying put this year.
I don’t have any money for travels.
Well Brandon, do you like to travel with others or by yourself?
Well, I usually like to go it alone.
You mean by yourself?
Yes, I like to go by myself.
But sometimes I like to go in groups.
Well, do you have any trips planned for the near future?
I do, Ken.
And I plan to go all out.
Out to where?
Oh, I just mean that I won’t hold back and will put a lot of effort into
planning my next big trip.
Maybe I will visit many countries at one time.
But I’m not always such a go-getter.
Go ger her?
Who is she?
No, Ken.
Not go get her.
A go-getter.
This is a person who has lots of energy and wants to succeed at doing something.
Oh, I get it.
(Chinese).
Well friends, we hope that you won’t go anywhere for now because Studio
Classroom will be back in a moment.
(Chinese).
I know you don’t want to miss what comes next.
Stay tuned.
Thank you, Michelle.
You know, I think that Iberian black pig ham sounds wonderful.
Imagine the special taste and nutty richness of black pig bacon and black pig
pork chops.
Yummy!
Well, I wonder if they can deliver one of those to my apartment.
Hmm.
Well, not many people realize that the Iberian Peninsula is made up of more than
just Spain and Portugal.
But it is.
Remember yesterday we learned that there is a small British territory called
Gibraltar.
And tomorrow we’ll visit yet another small region,
the tiny country of Andorra.
Andorra is famous for having one of the highest in the world, and I’m not
talking about a mountain.
So join us tomorrow and find out what that is.
Right now it’s time to say goodbye.
So friends, I hope all of you have a terrific day.
Bye-bye.
