(Music).
Hi, everyone.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for taking time to study English with us today.
My name is Steve.
If you love being in the mountains, but you’re not really a mountain climber,
then you need to know about taking a train trip into the Swiss Alps.
There’s actually a train that goes deep into Jungfraujoch offering passengers an
unbelievable view of the area’s natural beauty.
Another way to describe this mountain scenery is stunning - our first key word
of the day.
Our sentence reads:
On her wedding day, Joyce wore a stunning white and silver gown.
Next let’s look at the verb:
carve.
Vance gave his daughter a doll carved out of a piece of wood.
Now please open your magazines to page fifteen and climb aboard the train as we
head to Jungfraujoch.
The Top of Europe.
Jungfraujoch.
The train stops at two viewing stations within the tunnel, rewarding riders with
stunning views of green valleys and snowy mountains.
Finally, the train arrives at Jungfraujoch, ” the top of Europe.”.
The multilevel station sits at 3,454 meters in a winter wonderland between the
Jungfrau and the Monch.
After enjoying the scenery from the station, tourists visit the Ice Palace, a
group of rooms carved out of a glacier.
Or they can take a husky-drawn sled ride through the snow.
Hi, friends.
And welcome.
I’m Chelsea.
And I’m Rachel.
We’re so glad you joined us for the second day of our lesson.
We’ve been talking about the Jungfrau Region and about how beautiful the country
of Switzerland is.
Today, we’re going to a place called Jungfraujoch if I’m saying that correctly.
And in this particular area of Switzerland, you can ride a train and it will
stop at two viewing stations within the tunnel.
Now that part’s not as exciting as what we see next.
Because what will you see when you stop?
Well, you will be rewarded with stunning views of green valleys and snowy
mountains.
Now if something is stunning, it is extremely... extremely attractive or very
beautiful.
And these sights definitely sound stunning.
Green valleys and snowy mountains.
I think I’d like to go and take a ride on this train myself.
Me too.
We started talking about this train yesterday.
And the purpose of this train is to take you to the top of Europe.
So I guess it’s like the highest point you can get to.
And so if you take this train, you finally arrive at Jungfraujoch, which is
known as the top of Europe.
Now what do we learn about this station, the train station at the top?
Well, it is definitely at the top of Europe that is very high up.
In fact, this multilevel train station sits at 3,454 meters at the very top of
Europe. It’s in the midst of a winter wonderland.
As we mentioned, you can look out and see this beauty this natural beauty,
all the snow-capped mountains in the green valleys below from all the way up at
the top at 3,454 meters.
So I’m guessing you’d better take some warm clothes if you’re going to go to the
top,
because it’s probably not as cold on the bottom of the mountain as it is when
you are about 3,454 meters above sea level there.
So that is an exciting thing to do if you’re in this area and to see the winter
wonderland.
Well, after you enjoy this scenery from the station...
And let’s stop for a minute because let’s... we can review that word:
scenery.
We learned that word yesterday, didn’t we?
We sure did.
And scenery, if you remember, is just... it’s... what you see around you.
It’s, in this case, very natural beauty.
The mountains or the valleys or the waterfalls that are surrounded in this area.
Scenery is what you see.
So obviously, you want to take your camera if you go to this region,
because you will see beautiful scenery and you can enjoy it from this station.
Uh, but moving on, we read that after you enjoy the scenery, you can visit the
Ice Palace.
Now Chelsea, tell me what the... the Ice Palace is?
Well, the ice palace sounds very cool.
It is a group of rooms that is carved out of a glacier.
Now let’s stop there for a minute.
There are a couple words we might want to touch on.
If you carve something, you are cutting into something to make a desired shape.
A lot of times we think about carving something out of wood.
In this case, though, there have been rooms that have actually been carved out
of a glacier.
Wow, that is amazing because a glacier is a huge mass of ice.
And maybe you’ve seen ah, ice or snow, I guess we could say.
Maybe you’ve seen glaciers before.
And... it would take a lot of work to carve out a room, to carve out anything
out of a glacier.
So that’s pretty amazing.
This is something I would love to see.
It sounds very interesting and very cold at the same time.
Or if that doesn’t sound like enough for you, you can always take a husky-drawn
sled ride through the snow.
Now this is something I have always wanted to do.
Uh, when we’re talking about a husky, we’re talking about a big dog that has
very thick hair.
And they often live in very cold weather because that hair keeps them warm.
And they’re known for pulling sleds behind them.
So people actually sit in these sleds and they’ll tie a lot of dogs up together
and run and you get a ride in the back.
I love that idea.
And I... I always think of huskies as a kind of Eskimo dogs, you know,
because they can live in the coldest places on earth and they’re very strong
dogs as well.
So if you want to go on a husky-drawn sled ride, this is the place to do it.
And also we see a... a hyphen between those two words because sometimes we talk
about a horse-drawn ride,
or maybe another animal that can pull a sled.
But in this case, we’re talking about dogs.
So it’s pretty exciting.
And we encourage you again to take a look at those pictures.
Throughout your article you can see some of the sights that we’ve been talking
about.
And of course, all of the natural beauty in the Jungfrau Region.
Well, right now we’re going to visit the Chat Room and take a break.
But we’ll be back to talk more about this beautiful part of Switzerland.
Hi, friends.
Welcome to the Chat Room.
My name is Ken.
And Beth is joining me today.
Hi, Beth.
Hi, Ken.
Hi, everyone.
Ken, today we’re learning about Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest railway station.
Right. And Beth, our lesson says that the station is multilevel.
So it has more than one floor.
Could we also say it’s a multifloor station?
Ah, good question.
And no, you can’t.
Even though floor means the same as story, we don’t say multifloor.
But you can say it’s a multistory station.
The adjective multistory has the same meaning as multilevel.
Oh, OK.
What are some other ways to describe buildings with many floors?
Well, one very common noun is a skyscraper.
A skyscraper is a very tall building.
Right. Taipei 101 is a skyscraper.
Right. Another noun we can use to describe a building with a lot of floors is
high rise.
For example, Barber works in a high rise downtown.
High rise can also be an adjective.
We moved into a high-rise apartment building next to the river.
As a noun, it’s two words.
And as an adjective, it’s hyphenated.
(Chinese).
Another word you can use to describe tall buildings is tower.
You may have heard of some famous buildings that have the word tower in the
name.
Like the Sears Tower in Chicago.
It was the world’s tallest building for several decades.
Oh, yeah.
And the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur.
They used to be the world’s tallest buildings too.
Right. And keep in mind that the word tower can actually describe a tall
building itself or a tall part of a building.
(Chinese).
Thanks for joining us, friends.
Now it’s time to take a break.
But stay with us.
Studio Classroom will be right back.
