Hi, friends. Welcome back from the break.
The Swiss Alps are a beautiful place to take a vacation.
The problem is:
How do you get to them?
They shoot four thousand meters into the sky.
Well, actually, that’s not a problem because there are cable cars and cogwheel
trains to take you there.
In our next section, we’ll learn about another thing that makes Switzerland
famous.
It’s cheese.
And seeing as we’re talking about food, it’s important that we know the word:
taste bud, as in:
Located on the tongue, taste buds allow people to recognize different flavors.
Next is the noun:
stew.
For dinner, Mrs. Carter served a delicious vegetable stew full of carrots,
potatoes and beans.
OK. Let’s pick up the reading on page sixteen under the heading Cheese, please!
The Top of Europe.
Cheese, please!
Back near the base of the mountains, visitors continue to admire the region’s
beauty.
Travelers can also please their taste buds with Switzerland’s most famous food:
cheese!
Cheese fondue is a tourist favorite.
Eating this dish involves dipping pieces of French bread into a pot of melted
cheese.
Another common dish is raclette cheese melted over potatoes and eaten with
pickles.
Suppentopf stew, a local favorite, contains beef and vegetables covered with -
of course - Swiss cheese.
Whether visitors stay two days or two weeks,
they’ll always remember the spectacular sights and mouthwatering tastes of the
Jungfrau Region.
(Music).
Welcome back.
Well, we’ve been talking about the natural beauty of the Jungfrau Region.
And before the break, we were talking about how you can take a train to the top
of Europe to the... the highest point.
And when you’re up there, it’s like a winter wonderland.
And there’s so much to see and so much to do.
But right now we’re going to focus on something different.
We’re going to talk about eating.
That’s right.
There’s always so much to eat too if you go to Switzerland.
And right now we’re going to be talking about their most famous food which as
you can see is cheese.
So once you travel to the top of the mountain on the train and you spend time
looking at the natural beauty around you,
you’re probably going to work up an appetite.
And when you get back down to the base, you are going to be ready to eat some
delicious cheese.
Sounds good to me.
So as we see in our text again, you have to go down near the base of the
mountains which is uh, where you started.
And then you can continue to admire the region’s beauty. But you can also, ha,
admire the food,
because we see here that travelers can please their taste buds with
Switzerland’s most famous food:
cheese.
Now first of all, before we go any further, Chelsea, what are your taste buds?
Well, you can actually see your taste buds if you look in the mirror and stick
out your tongue.
It’s this part of the surface of your tongue that is a little bit bumpy.
And those bumps are what cause us to be able to taste food.
They are our taste buds.
So they’re very important.
They sure are.
And I know very few people who don’t like cheese.
It seems like cheese is a popular food with many people all over the world.
So this is what Switzerland... one of the things it’s known for.
I think it’s also quite famous for its chocolate, ha, ha, which is another food
I love.
So I think I... if I went there, I would just be in paradise... because I could
eat as much cheese and chocolate as I want.
And we’re going to learn about some specific ways that people in Switzerland eat
their cheese.
First we learned that cheese fondue is a tourist favorite.
Now I’ve had a lot of different types of fondue.
But maybe some of our listeners and our... our students don’t know what fondue
is.
Rachel, can you help explain that?
Sure.
Now there’s again chocolate fondue or cheese fondue.
But it’s when you melt the food and you put it kind of in a pot, and then you
dip other foods in the pot.
So in this case, eating cheese fondue involves dipping pieces of French bread, a
certain kind of bread, into this pot of melted cheese.
And usually fondue has a little... some sort of fire under it to keep it warm so
the cheese is very warm.
And it’s just delicious, especially on a cold day.
And it would be a cold day.
Remember, you are surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
This sounds very, very good.
But it’s not the only cheese dish you can find in the Jungfrau Region.
Another common dish is raclette cheese.
Now raclette cheese is a little bit different than the cheese fondue we just
talked about.
Yes, and I... I don’t know if I’ve ever actually tried it.
But I’m... I think I would enjoy it because they melt this cheese over potatoes,
and they eat it with pickles.
Now I know both Chelsea and I love pickles and I like potatoes.
I...
This sounds like a very fun dish to try.
So there are things that you can try in Switzerland and maybe you can find in
other places.
This sounds like a great place to go.
But still, we have more food to talk about.
Our next dish.
Let me see if I can say this right.
Suppentopf stew.
And it is also a local favorite.
That means not only is it popular with tourists, but it is a dish many people
who are from Switzerland actually love.
And it has beef and vegetables in it.
And it’s covered, of course, with Swiss cheese.
Now let’s back up.
We need to explain that word stew a little more clearly.
OK. Stew is similar to soup, but it’s a little bit different.
Sometimes when you make stew, you might add different ingredients.
Here, of course, we’re talking about meat and vegetables.
But these are stewed for a lot of time in a pot of liquid, sometimes with the
gravy.
And so they make this particular stew, and then they cover it with Swiss cheese.
And I guess that’s another thing Switzerland is famous for.
Yes. They’re Swiss cheese.
Now again, remember, these are all very warm dishes.
People coming down from the top of the mountain are probably a little bit cold,
so they’ll be ready for a nice warm meal when they get back to the base.
All three of these dishes sound like they would warm you right up.
Oh, they sound wonderful.
So if you ever make it to this area, whether you stay two days or two weeks,
we guarantee you will remember the spectacular sights and the mouthwatering
taste of this Jungfrau Region.
And right now we have something very special for you to watch.
Let’s again enjoy some views from the top of Europe.
The Jungfraujoch, top of Europe, at an altitude of three and a half thousand
meters.
This is the highest railway station in Europe.
We’ve reached our destination.
(Music).
The Jungfraujoch, top of Europe, is a fascinating wonder world of ice and snow,
where visitors are offered a remarkable range of adventure activities and
sightseeing attractions.
Thirty meters deep in the eternal ice, we discover the Ice Palace - a fairytale
world of captivating magic.
(Music).
It’s a unique but popular setting for events such as cocktail parties.
And above the Ice Palace, we recommend a visit to the panoramic plateau,
with its breathtaking views of a majestic mountain and glacier landscape.
On the super upslopes in our ski and snowboard park, for example.
A relaxing walk in the pure white alpine snow,
simply soaking up the sun,
or a sled trip with the huskies of the Jungfrau railway.
A dog-drawn trip in the spectacular setting of the super high altitude panorama
is a unique and most memorable Alpine experience.
A special high speed lift takes passengers up to the Sphinx Observation Hall,
one hundred and seventeen meters high above the Jungfraujoch, top of Europe.
The breathtaking views extend southwards to the mountain peaks of Italy,
and northwards to the black forest of Germany and the Vosges Mountains of
France.
Thanks to its great natural diversity and scenic beauty,
the Jungfrau Region enjoys international acclaim as one of the world’s greatest
landscapes.
It is recognized by UNESCO as a world natural heritage.
Hi.
(Chinese).
And I’m already hungry.
But don’t you go away!
Stay tuned.
Thanks again, Michelle.
