Hi, everyone.
Welcome back from the break.
Before the break, we discovered that Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart, that
great classical composer.
I think all the history and the musical activities surrounding Mozart are reason
enough to visit this charming small city.
But wait, there’s so much more.
Let’s get familiar with three new key words.
The first is fascinating.
Helena tells fascinating stories about the many places she has been and the
people she has met.
Next.
It’s another adjective:
ornate.
The Orient Hotel has very ornate decorations from the last century.
And finally, palatial, as in:
The prince lives in a palatial mansion on a hill overlooking the city.
OK.
Let’s resume the reading on line five.
(Music).
Salzburg for the Holidays.
Mozart’s family moved here when he was seventeen.
A fascinating 30-minute movie details the lives of Mozart and his interesting
family.
Besides Mozart, this lovely old Austrian city offers a gloriously preserved old
town,
charming gardens, ornate churches and Europe’s largest and most complete
medieval castle.
Hohensalzburg Fortress sits on a rock high above the river.
You can hike up or ride the funicular to the 900-year-old castle.
From the courtyard, enjoy impressive views of the city and then visit the
palatial interior.
Climb to the top of a tower for a commanding city view.
(Music).
Welcome back.
Well, we are talking about this place called the Mozart Wohnhaus House.
And we know that it welcomes visitors and it provides insights into Mozart and
his life.
Sounds like an interesting place.
But what exactly is it?
Well, according to your text, it’s a place where his family moved when he was
seventeen.
So it sounds like this is the place where Mozart actually grew up or he lived
from the time he was a teenager.
Right. At least from the time that he was seventeen years old.
And if you go there, it sounds like that you can see a fascinating 30-minute
movie uh, that talks about the details of his life and the life of his
interesting family.
Now if this movie is fascinating, that means it fascinates you or it creates
interest in you.
We might say that if it’s fascinating, it’s very interesting.
Now Mozart isn’t the only exciting part about Salzburg.
There’s much, much more.
And we’re going to learn about some of that right now.
So besides Mozart, this lovely old Austrian city offers a glorious preserved old
town.
Now if something is gloriously preserved, it means it has glory.
Maybe it’s very, very famous.
And in this case, we’re talking about an old town that has been kept up very
well.
So what are some of the interesting or fascinating parts of this gloriously
preserved old town.
Well, this old town has charming gardens, so gardens that will charm you that
will draw you in.
And it also has ornate churches and Europe’s largest and most complete medieval
castle.
Now let’s look at... let’s back up and look at that word:
ornate.
If something is ornate, that means it is covered with decorations or covered
with ornaments, we might say.
So it’s heavily decorated.
And we can often talk about architecture or some buildings as being ornate.
I can imagine that this would all be so beautiful to take in.
It sounds just fascinating.
And I would enjoy seeing it someday.
So not only are there ornate churches but also Europe’s largest and most
complete medieval castle.
If something is medieval, that means it is during the time of the Middle Ages.
Now this castle is called Hohensalzburg Fortress.
And where does Hohensalzburg... Hohensalzburg Fortress sit, Chip?
Well, this fortress sits on a rock high above the river, which is a good place
for a fortress,
because a fortress is a strong building or a strong structure that is built or
created for the purpose of defending a city or defending or protecting a city.
So a fortress would be a military type building.
Well, if it sits up high on a rock way above the river, how do we get there?
According to your text, you can hike up or ride the funicular to the
900-year-old castle.
Now this sounds like a lot of fun.
But what exactly is a funicular?
Well, it is a small railway that carries people up and down a very steep hill
using a cable or a very thick metal rope.
So you can take a ride right up the side of the hill or side of the rock and go
visit this 900-year-old castle.
OK.
It sounds like you would get quite a view from the funicular.
Now from the courtyard of this castle, you can enjoy impressive views of the
city and then visit the palatial interior.
Now if the interior of the inside of this castle was palatial, that means that
it would be fitting for a palace, fitting for a fine high class castle.
Uh, and, or you can climb to the top of a tower.
This sounds like it might be the highest point that would be up on that rock -
the very top of the tower.
I imagine that they may be used to use this tower to look out for enemies who
were coming in.
But you can climb to the top for a commanding city view.
And that means that you can look out and see a very wide and beautiful view of
the entire city.
Sounds like fun to me.
All right.
Now we have some more information for you on a video, so stay tuned.
