Welcome back, everyone.
We are visiting the city of Salzburg.
Salzburg’s name literally means salt castle.
Salz is German for salt and burg means castle.
So why salt castle?
In and around the mountains of Salzburg lie large salt deposits.
Interesting, right?
And now you know a little German too.
Let’s check in on the Word Bank now where we find the phrasal verb:
take in.
We took in several Broadway plays when we went to New York.
Next is the verb:
enlighten,
enlighten, as in:
The professor enlightened his class on the differences in the chemical makeup of
the acids.
Now let’s continue reading Salzburg for the Holidays.
We’ll start on page fifty and line three.
(Music).
Salzburg for the Holidays.
Merchants sell figurines or nativity scenes, toys, warm sweaters and other
specialties of Salzburg.
For some local culture, take in a performance of ”Salzburger Adventsingen.”.
This traditional play features local children performing a nativity play and
singing in regional dialects.
In addition, the most famous Christmas carol of all time, Silent Night, was
composed in Oberndorf, a small town north of Salzburg.
You can visit Salzburg’s Silent Night Museum and enlighten yourself on the
song’s history or travel to Oberndorf to see where the carol was first
performed.
(Music).
Welcome back.
We are here talking about all of the wonderful Christmas smells and the
Christmas music that you can find at Salzburger Christkindlmarkt.
But not only that, you can buy things there as well.
As your text says, merchants sell figurines for nativity scenes.
Now Chip, I know that nativity is something that deals with the conditions of
birth.
Maybe the people who were involved or the place where it happens.
But it has to do with birth.
But when we’re talking about Christmas, we are talking about a very specific
nativity scene, am I right?
Of course.
We’re talking about the birth of Jesus.
And when Jesus was born, he was born in a uh... in a barn with animals,
and there were shepherds - people who take care of sheep.
Shepherds came and visited uh, the mother, father and the baby Jesus.
And so all of these characters and this whole setting is often represented in a
nativity scene,
which has small little figurines at Christmastime.
And a figurine is a... a tiny little statue of a person or a thing.
And not only can you find great nativity scenes at this market,
but you could also buy toys or warm sweaters because I think you’ll need them in
Salzburg, Austria, and other specialties of this very fantastic city.
Well, right now we have some more information for you on Salzburg.
But we’ll be right back to learn even more.
In October 1731, thousands of Salzburg citizens were forced to either reject
their beliefs in God or leave the city.
The thousands who refused to reject their faith fled north through a merciless
Austrian Winter.
Over the next few years about 150 of the Salzburg exiles found their way to the
British American colonies.
Ten years later, in 1741, they officially founded the town of Ebenezer, Georgia.
Wow.
Well, that sounds like there is a lot to take in when you visit Salzburg.
So there are a lot of experiences for you to take in.
If you take in an experience, that means that you experience it with your
senses.
You see it, smell it, hear it, and you take that in and appreciate it.
And our article goes on to say:
For some local culture, take in a performance of what, Chelsea?
Well, they could take in a performance of Salzburger Adventsingen.
So this is a traditional play and it features local children performing a
nativity play.
Now just before the break, we talked about a nativity scene.
So you can probably guess that a nativity play is a play that’s all about the
birth of Jesus,
that would have actors and actresses maybe portraying Jesus as mother and father
and the other people who were present at the time of his birth.
And they’re singing in a very special way, Chip.
How are they singing?
Well, these children are singing in their regional dialects.
So they are all singing uh, the same language but different dialects of that
same language.
So this would be an excellent cultural experience.
And because we have children performing, I think it would be pretty cute too.
I imagine that would be very cute.
So this play, uh, the Sulzberger Adventsingen sounds like a very great place to
go if you happen to visit Salzburg.
So one other thing that you can... that we want to teach you today about
Salzburg is the most famous Christmas carol of all time.
Now a Christmas carol is a song.
There are many, many Christmas carols all about Christmas.
But the most famous of all time is called Silent Night.
This is a song that I sing every Christmas and I know you do too.
And it’s one that we’ve known since we are little children.
And it actually originated or came from an area very close to Salzburg, didn’t
it?
Well, this was composed in the small town of Oberndorf.
And Oberndorf, as our article says, is a small town north of Salzburg.
Now there’s also a museum in Salzburg.
So it’s the Silent Night museum where you might want to go if you are a fan of
this Christmas carol.
And you can go to this museum and enlighten yourself.
Now if you are enlightened by something or if something enlightens you, that
means that it teaches you something.
It opens your mind to something new.
Or you can even travel to Oberndorf yourself to see where the carol was first
performed.
Now if you look at page fifty of your magazine, you will see a picture right
there of the Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf.
This again is a place where you can visit.
Now I feel like I have been enlightened very much.
I’ve been able to take in a lot of information about Salzburg at the holidays.
And there are many things I think I would like to see and do in Salzburg.
I think if I ever went,
I would definitely want to catch that play, the Salzberger Adventsingen and hear
all this children singing in their different dialects.
There are a lot of different experiences that... that you could take in here at
the holiday season.
I think that uh... I think that the thing that I would most want to do is go to
the market.
I think I would just love to walk around the market and experience the
atmosphere there.
That’s all we have for today.
But come back and join us tomorrow when we learn more about Salzburg at the
holidays.
Before we go, let’s watch a video.
(Music).
Hi, everyone. I’m Michelle.
(Chinese).
And I guess that’s all the time we have for today.
I’ll see you tomorrow.
Bye-bye.
Thank you, Michelle.
You know, friends.
Mozart isn’t the only famous Salzburger.
How about the man who helped write Silent Night?
Joseph Moore.
He was born in Salzburg.
Christian Doppler, the man who studied sound and discovered what is now known as
the Doppler Effect was also born in Salzburg.
And maybe second only to Mozart and fame, the von Trapps lived in Salzburg up
until the time of World War two.
You might remember the von Trapp family as the subject of the incredibly famous
musical The Sound of Music,
some of which was actually filmed in this charming Austrian city.
Friends, more on Salzburg tomorrow.
For now, everyone hopes you have a great day.
Bye-bye, everyone.
