Hi, friends.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
I’m so happy you’ve joined us today.
My name is Steve.
Visiting Salzburg in the summer is great.
You can go to the Salzburg Festival, hike in the surrounding Alps and even go on
a Sound of Music tour.
But a Salzburg winter holds its own special charm.
And that’s the focus of this month’s Studio Classroom TRAVEL article titled
Salzburg for the Holidays.
Our one key word for this section of the lesson comes from the French language.
It’s the noun:
facade.
And our example sentence reads:
The beautifully designed facade of the palace needs to be redone every ten
years.
OK. Let’s explore Salzburg some more.
Today’s reading starts at the top of page fifty on the right side.

Salzburg for the Holidays.
Explore another well-known Christmas market south of Salzburg at Hellbrunn
Palace.
Enjoy the beauty of the Baroque structure as well as view reindeer, sheep and
goats wandering the grounds.
Visit craft exhibitions, and admire the huge Advent calendar created from 24 of
the windows on the palace facade.
The palace’s fame arises mainly from its beautiful grounds and trick mountains.
The elaborate grounds were meant for the pleasure of the extremely rich Prince
Archbishop of Salzburg and his guests.
One ”trick” of the garden is a marble table with seats that are part of a hidden
fountain.

Hi, friends.
And welcome to Studio Classroom.
I’m Chelsea.
And I’m Chip.
And thanks for joining us for our third day in our TRAVEL article this month.
For the last two days, we’ve been in Salzburg, Austria, in central Europe.
And we’ve been there specifically during the holiday season, which is an
excellent time to visit Salzburg.
Today, what are we going to be talking about, Chels?
Well, we are going to be exploring another well-known Christmas market that is
south of Salzburg.
Yesterday, we talked about the Sulzberger Christkindlmarkt, which is the most
famous Christmas market.
But today we are going to be talking about the market that is south of Salzburg
at Hellbrunn Palace.
Now again, I’m not certain if I’m saying that exactly right,
but you can see how it’s spelled and how it looks there in your article.
So what types of things can we enjoy at this market Hellbrunn Palace?
Well, the Hellbrunn Palace sounds like... it has some beautiful architecture.
It sounds like uh, it’s a beautiful structure.
Uh, our article talks about being a Baroque structure, which is a style of art.
Baroque is a style of art or architecture that came about during the 16th to the
18th century.
So it’s a... it’s an older style of art, and it’s very beautiful.
And we learned that word ornate the other day.
It’s very decorated.
So it would be a lot to look at and a lot to take in.
So you can enjoy this beautiful Baroque structure as well as view a lot of
different types of animals including reindeer, sheep and goats,
and they will all be wandering around the grounds.
They’ll just be kind of walking out there in the open.
Now we see maybe a couple of names here that we’re not familiar with.
What’s a reindeer, Chip?
Well, a reindeer is a large deer that is from the northern parts of the world.
And uh, a reindeer is also known as a caribou.
And these are actually the deer that traditionally carry Santa’s sleigh they
pull Santa Claus’ sleigh at Christmastime.
And those reindeer can fly.
But I don’t think in real life reindeer can actually fly.
But not only can you see all of these animals wandering around the grounds,
but you can visit craft exhibitions and admire the huge Advent calendar created
from 24 of the windows on the palace’s facade.
Let’s back up and look at that word Advent, first of all.
Now an advent is a word that refers to the coming or the arrival of something
special.
But in this case, we see that Advent is capitalized.
So we’re referring to a very specific advent.
And in this case, who are we talking about or what special arrival are we
talking about?
Well, we’re talking about the arrival of Jesus.
The nation of Israel was waiting for the arrival of their true king.
And we believe that that true king was Jesus and still is Jesus.
So these Advent time or this Advent season is celebrated uh, in the weeks that
lead up to Christmas.
And they celebrated with the calendar created from 24 of the windows on this
palace facade.
Now that word facade might sound a little different than it looks.
Uh, but we’re talking about the face or the front of the palace building.
And Advent calendars are very popular around Christmastime.
Not only can you see them here in Salzburg but you can see them all over the
world.
My family used to use an Advent calendar every year,
and we would open up different windows of the Advent calendar every day before
Christmas to reveal something special.
Now let’s move on and talk a little bit more about this palace and where its
fame comes from.
So Chip, where does this palace’s fame arrive from?
Well, our article says that it mainly comes from the beautiful grounds and
something else.
Our article goes on to talk about the famous trick fountains.
Now if you play a trick on someone,
that means that you play a joke or you do something unexpected uh, to maybe make
them look bad or make them a little bit embarrassed.
And so these elaborate grounds were meant or they were created for the purpose
of what?
Well, they were created for the pleasure of one man:
The extremely rich Prince Archbishop of Salzburg.
So this man was very well-known at the time.
He was very wealthy and had a lot of land and a very beautiful home.
And he often would invite guests over to his home to join him for dinner and for
probably laughing and just having a good time.
But I think in the end, the Prince Archbishop was the one who was having the
most laughs and the best time.
Why, Chip?
Yeah, it does sound like he was a man who liked to laugh because one of the
tricks of his garden is a marble table that has uh, special seats,
and these seats are part of a hidden or secret fountain.
Now we’ll learn a little bit more about this later.
What do you think of this, Chelsea?
Well, I don’t know what’s going to happen.
But I’m not sure that I would want to go over to his house.
The way it sounds, he’s going to be playing tricks on his guests.
And I don’t know if I want to have tricks played on me when I go to someone’s
house for dinner.
Well, right now we are going to visit the Chat Room and take a break.
But when we come back, we will tell you more about what this Prince Archbishop
did to his guests when they came over.
So stay with us.
Hello, everyone.
And welcome to the Chat Room.
I’m Ken.
And I’m Brandon.
Hello, everyone.
So Ken, we’ve been talking about a great TRAVEL article the past few days.
And Ken, you are an expert when it comes to traveling, right?
I wouldn’t call myself an expert, but I do like to travel.
Well, I am truly a novice when it comes to traveling.
A novice?
Right. A novice.
This is someone who is new to something.
I just started traveling, so I’m a beginner.
Well, I’m a novice when it comes to playing basketball.
But haven’t you played for many years?
Well, yeah.
Then you mean you are an amateur.
An amateur?
That’s right.
An amateur is not necessarily new to something but is someone who is not very
skilled at something and does something just for a hobby.
We use this word a lot with sports.
If someone plays basketball just for fun, we would call this person an amateur
basketball player.
And someone who makes money for playing sports we could call an expert
basketball player?
Actually, the word professional is more common, even though the two words are
synonyms.
So professional is the opposite of amateur.
That’s right, Ken.
So when should we use ”expert”?
Expert is used more to describe a person in a certain field, such as an expert
in economics or history.
Or if a person knows a lot about something, such as traveling, we could call
them an expert traveler - using expert as an adjective.
Oh, now I understand.
(Chinese).
Thanks for joining us in the Chat Room.
Right now it’s time for a break.
But stay tuned because Studio Classroom will beright back.
