Welcome back from the break, everyone.
Now how would you like to go to a formal dinner knowing you were going to get
squirted with a jet of water... by the host?
That’s the topic of this last segment which includes three new key words you
need to know.
The first is the noun:
jet.
A jet of water broke through the window and flooded the house during the heavy
rainfall.
Next is chagrin, as in:
Everyone saw the chagrin of Michael’s face when he missed the basket and caused
his team to lose the game.
And finally, a great little word:
spa.
After a hard day at work, Michelle and Margaret went to the spa to relax in the
warm water.
Now it’s time to pick up the final reading on line fourteen.
(Music).
Salzburg for the Holidays.
Each seat, with the exception of the Archbishop’s, contains a water jet.
When the Archbishop held a dinner at Hellbrunn, he could turn on the water and
squirt his guests.
As nobody could stand up until the Archbishop did, imagine the chagrin of his
guests!
For a more enjoyable wet adventure,
pay a visit to Alpentherme Gastein, a large spa that features six different
health and adventure worlds.
In winter, visitors can swim outside in the freezing temperatures and yet stay
deliciously warm in the thermal water.
Salzburg and the surrounding area offer lots to see, taste and touch any time of
the year!
(Music).
Welcome back.
Before the break, we were taking a... a short look at the Palace of the former
Prince Archbishop of Salzburg,
who sounds like a little bit of a funny man.
He liked to play tricks on his guests.
And we saw before the break that he uh, the part of...
one trick in his garden or one trick in his... his grounds at the palace involve
a hidden fountain underneath the seats of a table.
That’s right.
Now each seat, with the exception of the archbishop’s - that means everybody’s
seat except the Prince Archbishops - contained a water jet.
Now this word jet means a thin stream of liquid or gas that comes out of a very
small hole or opening.
In this case, it would be water coming out of a small hole or opening.
And when the Archbishop held a dinner and had guests over to his palace, he
could turn on the water and squirt his guests.
Now that doesn’t sound very nice to me.
I think we would call the Prince Archbishop ornery. He liked to be a little
misbehaving from time to time.
Right. He... he liked a good joke, it sounds like, even at the expense of his
guests, maybe.
Uh, and as nobody could stand up until the Archbishop did, uh, imagine the
chagrin on the faces of his guests.
Now I think this does sound like something that would embarrass uh, the guests,
and so the guests would feel a little bit of chagrin or embarrassment.
I imagine that they would and just think about this:
All of the people sitting around the Prince Archbishop are getting wet from
these water jets,
but the Prince Archbishop is probably just sitting there laughing his head off
and having a good time.
So that’s maybe what would’ve happened had you been a guest at the Prince
Archbishop’s palace many years ago.
But for a more enjoyable wet adventure, you can go to another place.
Now I’m going to try to say this correctly for you.
Alpentherme Gastein.
That’s my best guess, Chip.
But what is this place Alpentherme Gastein?
That’s pretty good.
Well, it is a large spa which uh... if you know what a spa is.
That means that people would go there for beauty and for exercise or for health.
So you might go to a spa to improve your health by exercising.
Or perhaps you might go to a spa to receive a massage in your neck or shoulders
or even your feet or maybe a full body massage.
And this would improve your health.
Or you might go to a spa to improve your beauty, uh, to help the beauty of your
skin on your... on your body or perhaps on your face.
And spas are very relaxing and very popular.
And this one in particular sounds like it would be a wonderful spa.
It has six different health and adventure worlds.
While you’re there, you could visit those adventure worlds.
Or you could go outside in the freezing winter temperatures and swim.
Now that sounds like it would be a little bit cold.
But how are they able to do this, Chip?
Well, they’re swimming in hot water... hot water.
Our article says ”thermal water,” so its water that has been heated.
And I love how our author talks about this.
In the freezing temperatures, you can stay deliciously warm.
Now she’s using that word ”delicious” in a creative way.
If something is delicious, that means it satisfies you.
You eat food that is delicious and you feel very satisfied in a very complete
way.
So here you are in the water and it feels a little bit delicious, we might say.
I guess it feels a little bit delicious.
I’ve had the opportunity to swim in very, very warm water while it’s snowing and
freezing cold all around me.
And I do agree it is a very deliciously... deliciously warm feeling and very
enjoyable.
Now Chip, have you ever been to a spa before?
I suppose we... I have been to a spa in Europe.
Uh, not one in Salzburg.
But yeah, I’ve been to a spa where we did get into some very, very hot thermal
water.
And it did the body good.
It made my muscles feel very relaxed.
Uh, spas are very great places to visit.
I enjoy them myself very, very much.
So this is only one of many things that you can do if you decide to ever go to
Salzburg for the holidays,
uh, because Salzburg and the surrounding areas offer lots to see, taste and
touch any time of the year.
So not just at the holidays but any time of the year.
Now Chip, over the last few days, we’ve been talking about a lot of different
things going on in Salzburg.
If you had to do one thing that we’ve talked about while you’re there, what one
thing do you think you would do?
Well, first of all, I would definitely go there during the holiday season uh, to
experience the Christmas atmosphere.
And because it would be in the holiday season, and there would probably be snow
on the ground and it would be very cold.
Actually, I think bathing in these warm waters sounds perfect for me.
And you would probably go skiing too because you are a skiing enthusiast.
Thanks for joining us for this article.
We hope you learned a lot.
Right now we are going to watch a video.
We’ll see you next time at Studio Classroom.
(Music).
Hi, everyone.
I’m Michelle.
(Chinese).
And much to my chagrin, we have to say goodbye again.
Goodbye and take care.
Thanks again, Michelle.
Well everyone, I hope you enjoyed your trip to Salzburg, Austria.
Now next month’s TRAVEL feature doesn’t actually take us to a specific
destination.
That’s because we’re going to focus more on the act of traveling itself.
We’ll talk about a new kind of airline that was created specifically for pets.
That’s right.
It’s an airline company that gives your pet dog or cat the opportunity to travel
the world just like you.
Again, that lesson happens next month.
Tomorrow, we’ll check in with Luke and see what he’s doing in America.
Until then, all of us here at Studio Classroom hope you have a great day.
Bye-bye, everyone.
