Hi, everyone, welcome back from the break.
We learned that the Keukenhof gardens have quite a bit of history associated
with them.
But we had to take a break before we found out what makes these gardens really
special.
Glance again at the title of this day’s lesson, and you’ll easily be able to
guess.
Right, the Keukenhof gardens are famous for tulips.
Even though it’s seasonal, Keukenhof gardens hosts the largest display of tulips
in the world.
Let’s learn more as we pick up the reading on line 13.
(Music).
Enjoying the Netherlands.
Millions of tulips and other flowers bloom here each spring, and the gardens are
advertised as the greatest flower show on Earth.
Fifteen km of walking trails take visitors past beds of blooms, each more
glorious than the last.
The gardens are open from mid-March to mid-May.
The tulips that bloom in the garden are actually on loan.
Different growers loan their flower bulbs to the garden to flaunt their latest
hybrids.
While there, be sure to see Europe’s largest fountain and a charming pond with
beautiful white swans.
(Music).
Welcome back.
Well, we’ve been visiting the Netherlands.
And specifically, we’ve been not too far outside the city of Amsterdam, in the
town of Leiden.
And now, uh, just outside of Leiden, we have a riot of color, which means we
have a lot of vibrant bright colors.
And I think these are probably coming from the flowers.
They are.
In fact, we find out next that this riot of color comes from millions of tulips
and other flowers that are blooming there.
And those flowers bloom each spring.
I don’t think I can even imagine what millions of flowers look like - that is so
many.
I think that that would be one of the most beautiful things to see.
Again, tulips are very brightly, vibrantly colored.
So to see millions of them at once would definitely be a sight to see.
Right, yeah, this does sound gorgeous.
And I think if there are millions of tulips, uh, I think it would also smell
pretty nice as well.
I know tulips are famous for being so brightly colored, but they also have a
nice fragrance that...
Uh, I think this would be an excellent place to be.
I can understand why so many people like to visit the Keukenhof gardens when
they go to the Netherlands for vacation.
It’s definitely a place that I would like to go.
And while I was there, I would really love to see these flowers in bloom.
And the gardens are advertised as the greatest flower show on Earth.
Not hard to believe - millions of flowers... I think that there’s probably no
other flower show like it on Earth.
Right, and this is fifteen km of walking trails take visitors past beds of
blooms.
And if we’re talking about, uh... one of these beds of blooms, we’re talking
about flower beds, or areas that are set aside for flowers, and for blooming
flowers.
So if you ever have a chance to go to the Netherlands,
make sure you visit the Keukenhof gardens and walk along the trails and enjoy
seeing the flowers that are planted in their beds.
And it sounds like as you walk along the trails, the flowers become more and
more beautiful; it gets better and better as you go,
because our article says that as you go, each area is more glorious than the
last.
That means it’s more wonderful, more beautiful, more amazing than the area that
you just came from.
Wow, so it increases in beauty and in glory as you walk through.
Well, this is the time to be buying your tickets, uh, to be visiting these
gardens, because our article says that the gardens are open from mid-March to
mid-May.
So it sounds like this, uh, this spring season is definitely the time to be
visiting these gardens.
Now I think this next bit of information is fairly interesting.
It tells us that the tulips that bloom in the garden are actually on loan.
That means that the Keukenhof gardens don’t own all of the flowers that are
there, but they are simply borrowing those flowers.
And we find out that they’re borrowed from different growers.
These growers loan their flower bulbs to the garden to flaunt their latest
hybrids.
So it sounds like these growers are very generous.
They want to make this a garden look beautiful every year, so they give their
bulbs...
And of course, the bulb is the part of the flower that you plant in the ground,
and then it turns into a beautiful flower.
Right, so the flower doesn’t survive the entire year, but the bulb does, and the
bulb is preserved in the ground.
So these, uh, bulbs are loaned to the gardens from the growers, and they are
flaunted.
OK, so if they are flaunting the latest hybrids, uh, then that means they are
displaying these hybrids proudly.
Uh, usually when we use the word ”flaunt”, we’re talking about... maybe showing
off a little bit - you’re very proud of something that you’ve done.
So some people might flaunt their knowledge, which means they’re... they’re
proud to display how much knowledge they have.
But of course, here we’re talking about the gardens flaunting their latest
hybrids.
And a hybrid is a plant or animal that has been produced by using two different
kinds, or two combinations of other plants or animals.
Now we hear this term a lot today when we talk about something like a ”hybrid
car”.
And a hybrid car would be a car that is powered by both gasoline and
electricity, so two different types of energy that help this car run.
So a hybrid flower would be a flower that has been created using a combination
of two different types of plants or flowers.
Right, and it’s possible that some of these hybrids are more brightly colored
because they are a hybrid flower.
Well, our article goes on to say that while there - while in these gardens - be
sure to see Europe’s largest fountain and a charming pond with beautiful white
swans.
Well, Chelsea, this sounds like a beautiful place to visit.
This, uh, this is certainly a riot of color.
You have different colored tulips, you have swans... absolutely beautiful.
I think as we continue on in the article, it gets more and more glorious as we
go.
Well, right now we have some video to show you.
So stick around for that, and we’ll see you tomorrow on Studio Classroom.
(Music).
Hi, everyone, I’m Michelle.
(Chinese).
And I guess that’s all for today’s Language Tips.
Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for more.
I’ll see you then.
Thank you, Michelle.
We always appreciate those helpful tips.
Well, friends, what’s one of the first things that comes to your mind when I say
the word Holland?
Well, for many people around the world, it’s the image of a tulip, or acres and
acres of multicolored beds of tulips.
Interestingly, the tulip flower and the name ”tulip” originally came from the
Middle East.
It wasn’t until the 1500s that tulips were first introduced to Europe.
And, now you know.
Friends, please come back tomorrow for our final day of Enjoying the
Netherlands.
Until we meet again, vaarwel.
Bye-bye, friends.
