Hello, everybody, welcome to Studio Classroom.
Thanks for joining us today.
My name is Steve.
Today we are going to wrap up a three-day TRAVEL feature on the Netherlands.
There’s much to enjoy in this low European country, particularly if you enjoy
history, art, or tulips.
But wait, there’s more.
Let’s not forget the Netherlands’ famous pottery, windmills and cheese.
These are the three topics we’ll look at today.
Now if you’re ready, let’s open our Studio Classroom magazines to page 43 and
start reading under the heading, ”Pottery and cheese”.
Enjoying the Netherlands.
Pottery and cheese.
Now heads to Delft, probably the most carefully preserved historic town in the
country.
Besides monuments, ancient houses and canals, you’ll find interesting shops and
restaurants in the little alleys that honeycomb the city.
Visit the Royal Delft Pottery Factory and pick up some souvenirs to take home.
Explore the New Church, built in 1381, with its tombs of the Dutch Royal family,
and climb the tower for a superb view of the town.
No one comes to the Netherlands without wishing to see windmills.
The country is still home to one thousand of them.
(Music).
Hi, friends, I’m Chip.
And I’m Chelsea.
We’re so glad you joined us for our third day of talking about the Netherlands.
So far over the past couple of days, we’ve talked about some impressive
historical sites and museums that you can visit while in Amsterdam.
Or you can travel outside of Amsterdam to places like Leiden, and enjoy millions
of beautiful tulips while they are in bloom.
But today we are going to be talking about the pottery and cheese you can
experience while you’re in the Netherlands.
OK, so we’re going to visit a historical town.
And so our articles says that now head to Delft, which is probably the most
carefully preserved historic town in the entire country.
So if it’s carefully preserved, that means it’s, uh, kept in the original
condition,
or they have tried very hard to keep this town from changing for the worse over
time.
So maybe it even feels like you’re stepping back in history or stepping back in
time when you go to visit Delft.
So besides monuments, ancient houses and canals, you’ll find interesting shops
and restaurants in the little alleys that honeycomb the city.
So there’s a lot to see in these alleys.
But this word that we use here, ”honeycomb”, is kind of an interesting word,
Chip.
It certainly is. And usually when we see this word ”honeycomb”, we’re talking
about it as a noun.
And when we talk about a honeycomb as a noun, we’re talking about the wax
structure, or the wax thing that bees make, uh, in their hives.
And it’s, uh, it’s a wax structure that’s specifically full of many holes.
And the honey is usually found in these holes.
Well, here, we’re using ”honeycomb” as a verb.
And these alleys are honeycombing the city, which probably means what, Chelsea?
Well, it’s kind of like saying these alleys are placing a lot of small little
holes in the city.
If you’ve ever been in a large city, there are many, many streets.
And off to the sides of these streets are often little alley ways or alleys that
you can go down and find a lot of neat and interesting places.
So this is true for Delft.
If you visit their city, go down the alleys as they honeycomb the city, because
there is much to see within these small little alleys.
Right, it sounds like a fun place to visit, uh, because there would be many new
things that you could discover in these little alleyways.
Well, our article goes on to say that you can visit the Royal Delft Pottery
Factory and pick up some souvenirs to take home.
I know that many of us, whenever we visit a new place, we want to buy some
souvenirs to take home.
Well, this might be the place to do it.
And I love pottery, so that would be a place that I would definitely want to
visit.
And not only that, though, you can explore the New Church, which was built in
1381.
I think that tells you right there just how well preserved this town is.
And at the New Church, it has the tombs of the Dutch Royal family.
Now a tomb is a place where a person is buried after they die.
That’s where the remains are at.
And here you can see the tombs of the Dutch Royal family, so this probably would
have been like a king and a queen and their family members.
And this next thing that our article mentions is definitely something that I
always like to do - you would climb to a high place for a great view.
So it says climb the tower here at this New Church for a superb view of the
town.
And if a view is superb, that means that it’s fantastic or it’s excellent - it’s
a great view.
There are so many fascinating things to do while in the Netherlands.
And of course, no one comes to the Netherlands without wishing to see windmills.
Now on our first day of discussing this article, we told you what a windmill is.
It’s a very large structure with blades on it, and the wind turns those blades,
and it produces energy often using water.
And there are many, many, many windmills in the Netherlands.
Right, our article says that the country is still home to one thousand of them.
And these windmills are probably very old structures.
And so, a thousand of them are still standing in the Netherlands.
And again, I mentioned the first day that my sister lives in Amsterdam for a
while.
She lived in the Netherlands, and she said that the windmills were always so
fascinating to see.
They are such unique structures.
And really, uh, throughout the rest of the world, there’s no other place quite
like the Netherlands when it comes to seeing windmills.
And I know how your sister likes to take pictures.
Uh, she is, uh, quite a good photographer - a superb photographer.
So she probably had many different beautiful scenes that she took pictures of
while she was there.
She did, Chip.
I’ve seen her pictures and they’re very good.
You know, something that I want to point out before we take a break is the fact
that we are calling this country the Netherlands - that is the name of the
country.
But you might sometimes hear it referred to as ”Holland”.
Now ”Holland” is not actually the correct name of the country.
The country is actually made up of two parts: North Holland and South Holland,
but the whole country is called the Netherlands.
So, just a little tip for you, so you don’t become confused.
Right now, we’re going to take a break.
But before we do, let’s watch a video.
