(Music).
Hi, friends. Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide. My name is Steve. And I
thank you for joining us today to study English.
Today kicks off three months of fun at the annual White Nights Festival in St.
Petersburg, Russia.
It’s that time of year when after being held prisoner by the long, cold, dark
Russian winter,
hundreds of thousands of people start packing away their heavy winter coats,
and heading outside to enjoy the warm temperatures and the longer days.
So, why don’t we open our magazines and have some fun with today’s festival
feature ”Fun Under The Midnight Sun,” starting on page 42.
Fun Under The Midnight Sun.
The sun shines on the White Nights Festival.
Tonight, most people around the world will turn in for the night after darkness
settles.
But for many in St. Petersburg, Russia, the late hours won’t keep people in -
the late hours will draw people out.
For the next three months, the White Nights Festival, an international arts
celebration like no other, will welcome visitors from far and wide.
Taking place during the season of the midnight sun, the famed festival has
something for everyone - so long as they’re willing to stay out late.
Hi, friends. Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide. I’m Chip.
And I am Chelsea.
And today we have a very special festival to teach you about.
And a festival, of course, is a place where many people gather together in order
to celebrate and have fun.
Now, today’s festival is no different.
In fact, people who attend today’s festival have fun under the midnight sun.
Now, Chip. That term ”midnight sun,” I don’t know if I quite understand it. It
seems a little strange to me.
Right. Well, it’s very strange because for us, uh, midnight is the time of
darkness. 12 a.m. is completely dark outside. There’s no sun shining.
But there are some parts of the world where the sun does shine at midnight.
And here we’re talking about the Arctic, or at least areas in the north of the
world.
So the northern parts of the world, uh, have a sun that shines 24 hours a day
during the summer.
Wow. That’s so interesting.
So it’s easy to see that the sun really does shine on the White Nights Festival.
And that, of course, is the name of the festival we will be learning about
today.
So, tonight, most people around the world will turn in for the night after
darkness settles.
I know. I’m one who likes to get plenty of sleep. I like to turn in once
darkness settles. How about you, Chip?
Absolutely. I like to turn it, which means I like to go to bed.
That’s a pretty easy... uh... phrase to... to understand.
You’re turning in. You’re stopping what you’re doing and you’re turning in and
moving toward the bed so you can go to sleep.
And here we have that phrase ”when darkness settles”.
So it kind of sounds... This is kind of a pretty way of talking about darkness
stopping and resting or remaining over the lands.
So darkness is settling over the land, and this is the time when people turn in.
So it’s nighttime. It’s time to settle; it’s time to go to bed.
But for many in St. Petersburg, Russia, the late hours won’t keep people in -
the late hours will draw people out.
Usually, when it gets dark out and when it’s close to time to go to bed, people
go in for the night; they turn in.
But in St. Petersburg, Russia, that nighttime darkness draws people out.
That means it causes people to want to go outside, to go experience something.
OK..
And for the next 3 months, the White Nights Festival, which our article calls
”an international arts celebration like no other,” will welcome visitors from
far and wide.
So visitors will come from all over the world and from very far away to visit
this international arts celebration like no other.
”Like no other”.
Let’s see if Liz can tell us what that phrase means in Grammar on the Go.
Hello, friends. Welcome to Grammar on the Go.
My name is Liz. And I’m in St. Petersburg, Russia, today.
This is where the White Nights Festival is held.
And according to our article, the White Nights Festival, an international art
celebration like no other, will welcome visitors from far and wide.
Notice the phrase ”like no other.”.
This is actually a shortened phrase.
What the writer is trying to say is that the White Night Festival is an
international art celebration like no other celebration.
However, to simplify things, ”like no other celebration” got shortened to ”like
no other.”.
This phrase or expression, ”like no other,” can be used when the object is
understood.
We use it to talk about how something is very unique and that there is nothing
else that can compare.
For example, if you want to compliment someone’s performance because it was so
special and unique,
you can say, ”I have attended many concerts before, but this musician’s
performance was like no other.”.
Or, if you want people to know how good a certain restaurant’s spaghetti is, you
can say, ”That restaurant serves a spaghetti dish like no other.”.
If you have your Studio Classroom magazine with you, take the time to check out
today’s grammar tip section.
You’ll find some more example sentences there.
And that’s all the time we have for today. Thank you for joining me here. And
I’ll see you again next time.
Until then, this is Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off in St. Petersburg,
Russia. Bye-bye.
Thanks, Liz.
So, for the next 3 months, this festival, the White Nights Festival, will take
place in St. Petersburg, Russia.
And our text calls it ”an international art celebration like no other.”.
Now, if we’re talking about the arts, we’re usually talking about things like
music and dance.
So as you can probably imagine, this festival will include such things like
music and dance.
And as we know, visitors come from far and wide.
It’s an international art celebration that draws people out, really, from all
over the world.
Right. And as our article calls it ”an international arts festival like no
other,” this is truly a unique arts festival.
Our article goes on to say that it takes place during the season of the midnight
sun.
So that means it’s happening during the season of summer in the Arctic.
Now this idea of a midnight sun is so interesting to me. I don’t live in the
part of the world where we get to experience the midnight sun.
But I think it would be, uh, such a neat experience to see the sun shining...
uh... during late hours of the night.
I think that that would make me want to go out and enjoy a festival if the sun
was still shining even if it was late.
Right. Now, I have never been so far north to see the sun shine at midnight.
But I have been far enough north in Canada to see the sun shine very late in the
evening at around 9 o’clock at night,
which is pretty late, uh, for a person who is from Illinois in the central
United States.
Well, this famed festival.
That’s another way of saying this, uh, festival that people have thought to be
famous has something for everyone - so long as they’re willing to stay out late.
As long as people are willing to stay out late, this festival is for you.
I think I would be one of those people who would be willing to stay out late
just to experience that midnight sun.
And, of course, this is an arts celebration like no other. And I like the arts
very much.
Well, we have more to teach us about this White Nights Festival; we will tell
you specifically what types of arts are covered.
But first we need to take a break. And before we do, let’s visit the Chat Room.
(Music).
Hey, Ashley. I’d like to check out these books.
Excuse me. Sorry, Ken. I’ve been yawning all day.
Did you stay out too late?
No. I was home in a decent time.
But I did stay up too late reading this new book I bought.
You stayed up, but you didn’t saty out.
What’s the difference between ”stay up” and ”stay out”?
If you stay out late, then you are somewhere other than your house late at
night.
But if you stay up too late, that usually means you were home and just went to
bed really late.
So someone can stay out late with friends at a party, festival or other events
like the White Nights Festival mentioned in this month’s Studio Classroom
magazine?
Right.
And someone else can stay up late studying or watching TV.
Now, what are the opposites of those terms?
Can someone stay in or stay down?
You’re halfway there.
Someone can ”stay in” in stead of ”stay out”.
Sometimes I like to stay in and relax in the evenings while other times, I like
to stay out with friends.
What about ”stay down”?
Does that mean you go to bed early?
No.
”Stay down” is an expression that means to lower your body to the ground.
It doesn’t have anything to do with sleep.
But there’s another expression ”stay over,” and that has to do with sleep.
I know what that means. My cousin is staying over at my house this weekend.
Yes. To ”stay over” means to sleep over at someone else’s house.
I have guests staying over at my house so I’m pretty busy.
Well, Ashley. I’d love to ”stay around,” but I have to get going.
OK. I’ll check out these books for you.
Thanks a lot.
