Welcome back, everyone.
From the break we’re here at Studio Classroom Worldwide talking about Japanese
animation.
It seems Japanese-style animation and art is everywhere we look.
It’s easy to recognize.
Characters have large eyes, small mouths and oversized heads.
Anime is a close relative of manga,
which is a very popular Japanese style of drawing.
Let’s find out more about these Japanese cartoons and comics and how they’re
growing in popularity.
But before we do that,
let’s look at the word spectrum as in:
The students had a wide spectrum of opinions about their new teacher.
OK, this next reading begins on page thirty-two.
So follow along as we read.
Amazing Anime.
Universal appeal.
Though anime began in Japan, it now boasts worldwide popularity.
Consumers in the United States, Europe and Asia devour it.
In fact, nearly three percent of Japan’s exports are cultural products,
with anime and manga leading the way.
Few entertainment mediums cover so broad a spectrum of entertainment as anime.
Though it is a general term for Japanese cartoons, anime is used in puppetry and
music videos as well.
And the variety of themes in anime makes it easy for everyone to find something
they like.
Welcome back.
Well, let’s get into our lesson again. And we’re going to be looking now at the
universal appeal of anime.
And if something has universal appeal, then obviously people all over the world
are interested in it.
It’s appealing to many, many people.
And Esther, who else enjoys anime besides the Japanese?
Well, in addition to people in Japan, people in North America and also Europe
and many places in Asia are all enjoying anime very much.
In fact, they’re devouring it.
So that’s a unique word for our author to use.
And I think what she’s trying to say is people can’t get enough of it, right?
Chip, when we usually use the word devour, we think of food, don’t we?
Usually we are devouring food.
For instance, if a bowl of ice cream were sitting in front of me, I would want
to devour it.
I love ice cream and so I would devour it.
I would eat it very quickly.
I would, too.
Definitely.
I love ice cream probably just as much as you do.
So I love to devour ice cream.
Well, some people love anime so much they just devour it.
They can’t get enough of it.
And we call these people consumers.
They are consuming or using uh, as much of this product as they can.
That’s right.
In fact, almost three percent of Japan’s exports are cultural products,
with anime and manga leading the way.
Which means every year Japan sells many things to people around the world.
Electronics, maybe different food items.
But many people are buying anime and manga from Japan.
That’s right.
We’re talking about the exports here,
things that are exported or sent to another country.
I even notice nowadays in the States Japanese things and products are quite
popular.
And it’s true.
I’ve been uh, surprised on my trips back to see so much of their animated uh,
characters and things in... in stores.
That’s right.
People make pencil boxes and clothes and pens and all sorts of related products
from these anime characters.
So definitely there’s a market for it.
And a lot of these animated characters and manga are leading the way in the
Japanese exports.
Well Chip, moving on here we see that anime covers a broad spectrum, doesn’t it?
That’s right.
And spectrum is another one of our Word Bank words, uh, which means here a wide
variety,
just as a rainbow has a wide variety of colors.
So here we’re getting a wide variety or a spectrum of different forms of anime.
Right.
We’re talking about a spectrum of entertainment.
So again he just defined the word spectrum and it’s a broad range of something.
So there are so many different kinds of entertainment when we’re talking about
anime.
That’s right.
Usually it’s a general term for Japanese cartoons, but not always,
because people also use anime when they talk about Japanese puppet... puppetry
or stories of puppets and music videos as well.
Puppetry.
Now puppetry is interesting.
If you’ve seen puppetry, that... a person is using a puppet,
maybe kind of like a little animal or something and you put the puppet on your
hand.
And then you move the puppet’s mouth so it looks like the puppet is talking.
So I didn’t know this before.
But I guess anime also is uh... uses things like puppetry,
and music videos?
Apparently there are music videos out there with anime,
which I assume they would be on the Internet and maybe on the television.
And there’s also another form of... and you see anime in movies.
Right.
It’s all over the place, isn’t it?
Like we said before, we’re being assaulted by all kinds of entertainment.
And whether it’s through puppetry or music videos... or cartoons, you can find
anime all over the place.
So whether you like anime or not or whether maybe you’ve noticed that what
you’ve seen is anime or not,
anime is available everywhere in many different forms.
So it’s easy for everyone to find something you like, find some type of anime
you like.
Right.
There’s a variety of themes.
There’s something for everyone.
Now I have to admit I haven’t watched much anime.
But I have a feeling that there is some anime out there that is something I
would enjoy.
And I think that’s what our author’s trying to say.
Yeah.
I have... have not seen very much anime, either.
But as we’ll see tomorrow, it does talk about and it teaches some things that I
think I would like to see.
I think I... I think anime is something that I could get pretty interested in.
Me too.
I’m definitely more curious now after learning about it in this lesson. Well
friends,
we definitely have more to learn.
And we hope that you’ll stick with us over the next couple of days.
Right now we’re going to watch today’s skit.
Comic books, television, movies.
Ahhhh!
Visual entertainment is assaulting my senses.
Everybody wants my attention.
Hello, I’m taking center stage.
Ahh! Who are you?
What are you?
My distinctive form is anime, Japanese animation.
You look like a cartoon.
Yes, but not any cartoon.
Specific characteristics set me apart.
Like your big eyes and your small mouth and your big head and your exaggerated
expressions.
That’s me.
That’s anime.
Hey, you look like manga from Japanese comic books.
We’re connected.
I’m an animated manga and I’m very popular. I’m leading the way in Japan’s
exports of cultural products.
So you are anime,
the Japanese cartoon.
That’s right I cover a broad spectrum of entertainment with many categories and
lots of themes.
Then it should be easy to find something to like about You.
Yes.
Now what can I like about you?
Hey!
I’m just kidding, haha. I like you already.
OK, we can be friends.
(Chinese).
And don’t forget to come back tomorrow for our distinctive Language Tips.
See you then.
OK, thank you very much, Michelle.
That was very helpful.
Friends, we have much more to discuss about Japanese anime.
I hope you come back tomorrow as we’ll take a closer look into the history of
animation.
For example, how did anime get started?
We’ll find out next time here at Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Until then,
have a great day, everyone.
(Music).
