And you are tuned to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for joining us today to study English.
Well, once again, it’s that time of year when Hollywood gets ready to release
some of the biggest movies of the year.
Summer is the time when kids are out of school and families are on vacation.
So, is there a better time to visit an air-conditioned movie theater and enjoy a
moment of movie magic?
No, there is not.
But you ask: What exactly is playing in theaters this summer?
Let’s find out as we open our Studio Classroom magazines to page 22 and begin
the lesson: Summer Movies.

What’s playing in theaters this summer?
Movie fans know that Hollywood offers many exciting titles during the summer.
From May to August, here’s some of what eager moviegoers can expect to see.
Many sequels hit the screen this summer.
Robert Downey Jr. again plays Tony Stark / Iron Man in Iron Man 2.
Nick Fury, a character from the 2008 movie, asks Tony for help.
He wants to stop a criminal named ”The Mandarin.”.
The fourth Shrek film is Shrek Forever After.
It introduces more fairy-tale characters including Rumpelstiltskin and
Cinderella.
Hi, friends, and welcome.
I’m Chelsea.
And I’m Chip.
And thanks for joining us for our first of three days, as we’ll be going through
our ENTERTAINMENT article for the month.
And if you’ve joined us in... uh... for the past several years, you know that
here at Studio Classroom,
we like to prepare you for some of the movies that are coming to a theater near
you.
So we’re talking about the movies that are going to be playing at theaters this
summer.
Now we know that Hollywood likes to release some of their best movies at the
summer... in the summer months, isn’t that right, Chelsea?
That’s right.
In fact, the first line of our text says that movie fans know that Hollywood
offers exciting titles during the summer.
And that’s very true.
A lot of filmmakers and production companies wait until the summer to release
their films.
I guess that’s probably because people enjoy going to the movies during the
summer.
The summer often seems like a more relaxed time, so maybe a better time to see a
movie.
And of course, that means a better time to release a movie.
Right, they’ll probably make more money on that movie if they release it in the
summer months.
So from May to August, here’s some of what eager moviegoers can expect to see.
Now a moviegoer is simply a person who goes to the movies.
If you go to the movies, you’re probably getting out of your house and going to
a theater to watch a movie.
But what does it mean if we have an eager moviegoer, Chelsea?
Well, if you’re eager about something, Chip, that just means that you’re wanting
very much to do or to have something,
especially something that is very interesting or enjoyable to you.
So, an eager moviegoer would be just a person who is very excited and
anticipating the movies that are coming out to the theaters this summer.
Well, you know, I think I could call myself an eager moviegoers.
There are several movies that I am eager to see that will be playing in these
next few months.
I agree.
I love summer because of the movies that come out.
And I think that we’ll find out that there are lots of good ones that you might
be interested in seeing this summer.
Well, let’s start out by talking about some sequels.
Remember, a sequel is a movie that follows another movie, maybe the second or
the third movie, uh, in a series that has the same characters.
So we have many sequels hitting the screen this summer.
One of those is, uh, starring Robert Downey Jr.
And this summer, again, he’ll be playing Tony Stark / Iron Man in Iron Man 2.
OK, so if you saw the first Iron Man, then you won’t want to miss this second
one or the sequel.
Now Nick Fury, in this story, who is also a character from the 2008 movie, he
asks Tony for help.
And he wants to stop a criminal named ”The Mandarin”.
Now a lot of these movies we see coming out lately are based on comic books and
fictional characters, and Iron Man is no different.
And it has a lot of action.
And if people are fans of comic books, then this would be a good movie for them
to see.
And if they saw the first one, they certainly would want see the second one.
Absolutely.
And I know there is a lot of action in the first movie, so I think we can
probably expect a lot of action in Iron Man 2, the sequel.
Now let’s move on to the next sequel that our article talks about.
It’s the fourth Shrek film, and it’s called Shrek Forever After.
Now that sounds like a... a fairy-tale movie, is that right, Chelsea?
Well, that’s exactly right.
In fact, Shrek... this Shrek Forever After is a fairy-tale as it’s described in
our article.
And a fairy-tale is a story for children that often involves something kind of
very magical and mythical,
such things as creatures that don’t exist in real life.
And of course, if you’ve seen any of the Shrek movies, which I love very much,
you know exactly what we’re talking about.
And this fairy-tale includes characters like Rumpelstiltskin and Cinderella, and
those are both very famous fairy tale characters.
Right, Rumpelstiltskin was... I think a fairy-tale character who made gold out
of straw or, uh, out of long strands of grass.
He would spin and turn those into gold.
And that plot, that story certainly sounds like it came from a fairy-tale story.
Right, and it does.
And you know, the one thing I really love about the Shrek movies is that they’re
very entertaining... entertaining and fun for children,
but I think adults can also enjoy them very much as well.
I plan to see the next Shrek sequel.
Well, we’re going to take a break right now, but before we do, we’re going to

Uh, you’re going to hit the gym?
Are you angry at the gym?
I don’t get it.
Oh, no, Ken.
To hit means to go to a certain place.
For example, you can hit the beach when the weather is nice.
So you go to the beach.
That’s right.
But keep in mind that that’s an informal usage.
You can use it with your friends, but don’t say let’s hit the beach to an
elderly person or someone important.
OK, I’ll remember that.
You know, there was this sentence in Studio Classroom that says, ”Many sequels
hit the screen this summer.”.
What does that mean?
Well, ”hit” can also mean to arrive at.
A new product can hit the market, which simply means to arrive at the market.
Your sentence says: Many movie sequels will come out this summer.
I see.
So a sequel is a continuation of a movie.
That’s right, and it’s not limited to movies.
A book or a play can also be a sequel.
For example, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a sequel to The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer.
What about a series?
How is that different from a sequel?
A film series is a collection of related films, like the Harry Potter series or
the James Bond series, whereas a sequel is just one film that follows another.
I see.
Well, I think it’s time for you to hit the gym.
You’re right.
It’s about time to punch out.
