Hi, everyone, my name is Steve.
Welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to study English with us.
It’s an annual tradition here at Studio Classroom - we’re looking at some of the
hot, new summer movies we can expect to see in theaters soon.
Yesterday the three movies we discussed all had one thing in common.
That’s right.
They were all sequels.
Now we’ll kick off today’s lesson with a different genre of movie.
What’s a summer movie season without adventure?
Let’s start with a remake of an old movie classic called The Karate Kid.
Today’s reading begins on page 22.
Summer Movies.
Adventure.
Young people will enjoy a remake of the 1984 film The Karate Kid.
Filmed in China, the picture stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.
In the movie, a single mother moves to China with her son Dre.
Once there, Dre gets interested in martial arts.
He wants to protect himself from mean kids at school.
His teacher is a martial arts master named Mr. Han.
Another adventure film, Prince of Persia, comes from a popular video game.
Hi, friends, welcome to Studio Classroom Worldwide.
I’m Chip.
And I’m Chelsea.
And because it is summertime, it is time for many new movies to hit the
theaters.
And of course, yesterday we told you about some exciting sequels that are coming
out this summer.
And today we’ll be talking about more movies that will be hitting the big
screens that you can find in a neighborhood close to you.
First, we’re going to start off by talking about some adventure movies that will
be coming out very soon.
Right, if we’re talking about adventure movies or movies with adventure, we’re
talking about unusually exciting movies.
Movies with a lot of energy and maybe dangerous activity.
Dangerous adventures, uh, which might be some kind of a journey or an exciting
experience in the movie.
And I know you like adventure movies, Chip.
And I do as well.
And this first one sounds a little bit familiar to me.
It says young people will enjoy a remake of the 1984 film The Karate Kid.
Now I was a child in 1984, but I loved the original movie The Karate Kid.
And this of course is a remake.
Now don’t get confused - it’s not a sequel.
It’s not following The Karate Kid as... as the same story line.
It’s a complete remake.
They’re taking the movie from 1984, and they’re kind of making a brand new one.
So it should be similar in some ways, and very different in other ways.
Right, I think we can expect many similarities, and we can probably expect many
differences as well.
Uh, the actors will certainly be different.
Uh, filmed in China, the picture stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.
Now those are two actors that, uh, were not in the original 1984 version of The
Karate Kid, but they are in this one.
And what big names star in this movie - Jaden Smith and of course Jackie Chan,
who is well-known all over the world.
Now in this remake, in this movie, a single mother moves to China with her son,
and his name is Dre.
And once there, Dre gets interested in martial arts.
Now Chip, I can’t think of a better person to star in a movie called The Karate
Kid than Jackie Chan because he is so good at martial arts.
Right, he is famous for his abilities in the martial arts.
And whenever we’re talking about martial arts, we’re talking about the sport.
Uh, for example, karate would be one of the many martial arts.
And these are sports that involve, uh, punching and kicking in order to defend
one’s self.
Uh, so karate would be one martial art.
We have taekwondo, and aikido, judo... these are all, uh, martial arts that come
from East Asia.
And so Dre is getting interested in martial arts once he moved to China.
And the reason for this is that he wants to protect himself from mean kids at
school.
It sounds like maybe he gets picked on and he needs to defend himself.
What better way than with martial arts?
And his teacher is, of course, a martial arts master named Mr. Han, and I assume
that is the role played by Jackie Chan.
I think that’s safe to assume.
Well, another adventure film is called the Prince of Persia, and this comes from
a popular video game.
Now, uh, Persia would be an Empire or a Kingdom that existed many, many years
ago.
So here we’re talking about, uh, the Prince of Persia, and this sounds like a
pretty interesting fantasy story.
We’ll learn more about that after the break.
Before we take a break, let’s visit the Chat Room.
Hey, Ken, what do you think of this picture?
It’s a nice picture.
What are you planning to do with it?
I think I’ll hang it up in the library somewhere.
There are too many blank walls in the library.
Hey, Ashley, I was just reading about the remake of the film The Karate Kid in
Studio Classroom.
And the article uses the word ”picture” to refer to the movie.
But that’s obviously not the same ”picture” as the one you’re hanging up.
No. When we use ”picture” to refer to a movie, we’re using a shortened form of
”motion picture”.
Motion picture?
That’s right.
A movie is basically individual images captured and stored on a single reel.
Because the reel is moving when the movie is being played, movies in the early
days referred to as ”motion pictures”.
Oh, I see.
But a movie is also called a film, right?
What’s the difference?
Hmm... I think that’s a question Doris can answer better than I can.
Let me contact her for you.
OK.
Most of the time, the words ”movie” and ”film” are interchangeable.
However, when you use ”film,” it gives one the feeling that it’s a serious or
artistic movie.
The word ”movie,” on the other hand, sounds a lot more entertaining or
commercial than a ”film”.
Oh, so that’s the difference.
Are there other terms we can use to refer to movies?
Well, we often use the term ”big screen” when we’re talking about movies.
For example, if you hear someone say, ”What’s playing on the big screen this
weekend?”.
They’re talking about what movies are playing at the movie theater.
Or if I ask you: ”Who is your favorite big screen star?”.
Then I’m asking you who your favorite movie star is.
And is there a small screen?
Yep, that would be a television.
OK, that makes sense.
So do you need help hanging up that picture?
No thanks. I got it.
(Chinese).
OK, it’s time for a break.
Studio Classroom will be rightback.
