(Music).
Welcome back, everybody.
I think it’s pretty interesting most movies are based on popular books and
novels, the lives of famous people, or important events in history.
Movies based on comic books are not uncommon, either.
But a movie based on a video game - now that’s something we don’t hear too
often.
But that’s exactly what our next adventure movie is based on.
Let’s learn more about the adventure fantasy film Prince of Persia, as we resume
the lesson over on page 23 and line 4.
Summer Movies.
This fantasy tells the story of Prince Dastan.
He is a 6th-century Persian Prince.
He and a beautiful princess join together to stop a villain from getting the
Sands of Time.
This treasure can actually turn back time.
The film has many exciting special effects.
Adventure moves to modern times in Salt.
Angelina Jolie stars as a CIA officer accused of being a Russian spy.
She must go on the run and try to prove her innocence.
Welcome back.
Just before the break, we introduced the movie The Prince of Persia, which comes
from a very popular video game.
And we continue to learn that this fantasy tells the story of Prince Dastan.
Now if something is a fantasy, that means it’s a creation of the imagination.
It’s something that’s imaginary.
We might say, ”He lives in fantasy all the time. He kind of lives in his own
world in his head.”.
Right, and actually this is very similar to the word we learned yesterday: a
fairy-tale.
Usually we think of fairy-tales as stories for children, whereas fantasies are
typically stories for more adult people.
Well here, uh... Prince Dastan is a 6th-century Persian Prince.
And he is... uh, he and a beautiful princess join together to stop a villain
from getting the Sands of Time.
This sounds interesting, Chelsea.
It does sound interesting.
Every good movie has a villain.
There has to be conflict in order to have a good movie.
And a villain is a character in a book or in a movie or a play that harms other
people.
We typically call the villain ”the bad guy”.
And so of course, this would need to have a good villain in it.
And it sounds like it probably does.
So the villain is trying to get the Sands of Time.
And it sounds like these Sands of Time are... are considered a treasure that can
actually turn back time.
So they would be able to take people back into the past, or, uh, make time work
backwards.
This film has many exciting special effects.
So it is probably going to be very pleasing to the eye to watch.
Maybe it has a good plot, as well as good special effects.
You might want to check it out.
Now adventure moves to modern times in the movie Salt.
And a very famous actress - you may have heard of her before - Angelina Jolie,
in this movie she stars as a CIA officer accused of being a Russian spy.
Now the CIA is an agency that does exist in the United States.
What does it stand for, Chip?
Well, the CIA stands for Central Intelligence Agency, and they are an official
government organization that collects secret information about other countries.
Now here she is accused of being a Russian spy.
A spy is actually a person who tries to collect information about other
countries.
And they might do so by acting like someone that they’re not.
Now if she is accused of being a Russian spy, what does that mean?
Well, that means that somebody has said that she has done something wrong.
If you are accused of doing something wrong, that means that someone says you
did something wrong.
So people are saying that she is a Russian spy.
So in the movie, she actually is a CIA officer, but she’s being accused of being
a Russian spy - a spy that belongs to Russ... to Russia.
So she must try to prove her innocence.
She is trying to prove that she is innocent of these things that she has been
accused of.
So she’s not guilty, and she needs to prove that.
Right, because innocence is when somebody is not guilty of a crime, instead they
are found innocent.
They are found right.
They are found not guilty.
So she has to go on the run to try to prove her innocence.
It sounds like a difficult job to meet, Chip.
I... I think it does.
It sounds difficult.
So she’s probably going to have to be pretty smart and pretty quick.
She needs to go on the run to prove her innocence.
And let’s talk with Liz about how to use that phrase and what that phrase means.
And after Liz is done, let’s watch some more movie trailers.
Hi, friends, how are you today?
My name is Liz, and it’s time for Grammar on the Go.
With all this talk about new movies, doesn’t it make you want to go to the
theater and watch one?
But before you go, here’s our Grammar Tip sentence.
She must go on the run and try to prove her innocence.
Our focus today is on the idiom ”on the run”.
This idiom’s original definition means trying to get away or stay away from
something.
In the case of today’s sentence, the writer is talking about how Angelina
Jolie’s character is trying to escape from people who want to catch her.
We can use this idiom to talk about people who are trying to get away from being
arrested.
For example: The bank robbers were on the run from the FBI.
Or: The police have issued an arrest warrant, and the suspect is now on the run.
Now this idiom ”on the run” also has another meaning.
Sometimes we use it to talk about how somebody is in a hurry trying to get from
place to place.
For example, let’s say Matilda is hosting a party and has been running around
from place to place buying the things she needs.
So we can say Matilda has been on the run, picking up different things for the
party.
Or let’s say Nancy is a very busy woman with a very packed schedule.
She is constantly running from one meeting to another.
So we can say that Nancy’s schedule is very crazy; she is always on the run.
Now, if you’d like to see some more example sentences,
you’ll find some more in today’s Grammar Tip section in your Studio Classroom
magazine.
That’s all the time we have for today.
And I do hope to see you again next time.
Until then, this is a Liz with Grammar on the Go signing off.
Bye-bye.
Have you wondered how you could’ve found such a treasure?
The gods have a plan for you - a destiny.
I’ve seen its power with my own eyes.
Releasing the sand turns back time.
Only the holder of the dagger is aware of what’s happened.
How did you do that?
Only the dagger can unlock the Sands of Time.
And there are those who would use this power to destroy the world.
Time will erase everything.
The only way to stop this Armageddon is for us to take the dagger to the secret
guardian temple.
We must take it there, Dastan.
You really enjoy telling me what to do, don’t you?
Only because you’re so good at following orders.
Don’t press your luck.

And that’s a quote from a man who’s been in many a movie - both good and bad -
the late great Elvis Presley.
Friends, I hope you find at least one of these summer movies appealing.
If you don’t like anything you’ve seen so far, don’t worry.
