My name is Steve.
Glad you can join us today.
Well, summer is just around the corner.
So what can we expect to be playing in movie theaters over the next four months?
I’m glad you asked.
As always, Hollywood tries to make sure there’s something for every taste,
including action, animation, adventure and fantasy, all of which we glanced at
on Monday and Tuesday.
Now today we’re going to switch gears and focus on the kind of movie that makes
us laugh.
They’re called comedies.
And our first funny film involves a huge lovable dog.
Let’s learn more as we start reading on page 23.
Summer Movies.
Comedy.
No summer is complete without comedies.
Laugh at Marmaduke.
He’s a lovable great dane who tries to cope with his family’s move to
California.
This live-action comedy finds Marmaduke in many crazy situations including a
canine surfing competition.
Ramona and Beezus, starring Selma Gomez, is based on a set of best-selling
books.
Ramona Quimby’s active imagination and unlimited energy get her into lots of
trouble.
In the action-comedy Knight and Day, a small-town woman - Cameron Diaz - goes on
a blind date.

And I’m Chip.
And thanks for joining us for our third day in our ENTERTAINMENT article this
month.
And you know that...
Uh, if you’ve been with us for the past couple days, you know that we’ve been
talking about the movies that are going to be showing this summer.
Now Hollywood waits till the summer months to release some of its best movies.
And uh, last two days...
For the last two days, we’ve been talking about some sequels; we’ve been talking
about some adventure movies.
Today we’re going to be, uh, starting off by talking about some comedy movies.
And I love comedies.
A comedy is any book or movie or play that is funny.
It makes you laugh.
And... in this case, of course we’re talking about movies.
So movies that are funny.
Now I like the first sentence that starts us off here.
It says, ”No summer is complete without comedies.”.
I have to agree.
Going to comedies is just a good way to release stress, to enjoy, to laugh and
have a good time.
Right, I think the summer months are already months where we are... well, it’s a
little easier to relax and have a good time.
So laughing should probably be part of your summer.
Well, maybe you want to laugh at Marmaduke.
He’s a lovable great dane who tries to cope with his family’s move to
California.
Now if he’s a great dane, that’s, uh, one kind of dog.
And actually, it’s a... it’s a very large dog.
A great dane is a huge animal.
I think it’s maybe the tallest of the dogs.
When it stands on all four legs, it almost looks like a horse.
It’s so tall.
So Marmaduke is a great dane, and he’s trying to cope with his family’s move to
California.
And this live-action comedy finds Marmaduke in many crazy situations, one of
those includes a canine surfing competition.
And ”canine” is just another name for dogs.
So Chip, I can just imagine all these dogs on surfboards, surfing in the water.
Right, a... a dog or a canine surfing competition... it sounds pretty
interesting.
Uh, something for Marmaduke to get himself involved in.
Uh, this sounds like it would be a pretty fun movie.
Well, moving on, we’re talking about Ramona and Beezus.
And this movie stars Selma Gomez.
And this is based...
This movie is based on a set of best-selling books.
Now if it’s based...
If we have a movie that based on a book, or in this case it’s based on a set of
books, Chelsea, what does that mean?
Well, it means that it’s using something else as the inspiration for creating
the main points of that movie.
So here it’s based on a book.
It’s using the book as inspiration.
And I grew up on the Ramona Quimby books; they were some of my favorites as a
young child.
And so I might have to go and check out this comedy when it comes to the
theaters this summer.
OK, and if they were best selling-books, then that means they were among the...
the books that sold the most copies when they came out.
So Ramona’s... Ramona Quimby’s active imagination and unlimited energy get her
into lots of trouble.
Now if your energy is unlimited, that means that it continues to come without
limit, without end.
Uh, so she has a lot of energy, and it gets her into lots of trouble.
Now from what I remember from the books growing up, that is very, very true -
she always had unlimited energy and was always getting into some trouble.
Now moving on.
In the action-comedy Knight and Day, a small-town woman - Cameron Diaz - goes on
a blind date.
Now you’ll notice that the word ”knight” there is spelled K-N-I-G-H-T, not
N-I-G-H-T.
Of course, N-I-G-H-T ”night” is the opposite of day.
But here we have ”knight” with a K.
What’s a knight if it has a K in front of it?
Well, several hundred years ago, it was the knights who protected the king.
So a knight would be a very strong warrior who has a very respectable,
honorable, uh, mission to protect the king.
So, uh, I think probably... usually, a knight would be someone that a woman
would be very interested in.
And Cameron Diaz would be that woman here.
She’s a small-town woman, that means she comes from a very small town, and in
the movie she goes on a blind date.
Now you probably know that if someone is blind, that means they cannot see -
they have no eyesight.
But that’s not exactly what a blind date means; it’s not somebody who is blind.
But a blind date is a date where two people meet and go out together for a
romantic evening without having ever met before.
Well, most blind dates are set up by a friend.
They recommend that this person and this person get together.
And so this is what’s happening in this movie Knight and Day.
And I would think, uh, with a plot like this, uh, any blind date, uh, has its
funny parts.
I think, uh, with this being part of the story, I think there’s a lot of room, a
lot of space, uh, for viewers to laugh.
I agree, it sounds like a fun movie, sounds like a good comedy, as well as this
movie Marmaduke.
We have given you lots and lots of movie so far.
Maybe you’re a person who likes sequels, or maybe you’re a person who likes
adventure films, or maybe you like to laugh a lot.
So some of these comedies might be a good choice for you.
Well, we still have a few movies to tell you about that will be coming out this
summer.
But before we do, we need to take a break.
