OK, we’re back from the break, everyone.
And each year around the world, hundreds - perhaps thousands - of movies are
produced by different studios and even independent filmmakers.
But the focus in this lesson is specifically on what Hollywood is offering this
summer season.
Now before the break, we briefly mentioned the action-comedy Knight and Day.
We have just a little more to say about that movie, and then we’ll switch gears
again and hit the drama department.
Now let’s resume the reading down on line 26.
Summer Movies.
Her life is turned upside down when her date - Tom Cruise - turns out to be a
super spy.
Drama.
The romantic drama Letters to Juliet follows Sophia, a young American woman, as
she travels to Verona, Italy.
The city is famous for Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet.
Sophia answers an old letter to Juliet seeking advice about love, and it changes
her life.
Whether it’s laughs, romance or adventure, you’ll find it at the movies this
summer.
Welcome back. Before the break, we were talking about Cameron Diaz’s comedy
that’s going to be released this summer called Knight and Day.
And it says that, uh, she goes on a blind date, and her life is turned upside
down when her date - Tom Cruise - turns out to be a super spy.
Wow! That sounds not only like a comedy but maybe a little bit like an adventure
or action movie.
And of course, Tom Cruise is a very, very famous actor himself.
And if he turns out to be a super spy, that means they’re in for quite an
interesting date.
Well, we have one more type of film to tell you about today, and that is in the
drama category.
And drama, of course, are movies that have a more serious topics.
So maybe these are movies that you might like.
OK, and there are many different kinds of dramas.
We’ll start off by talking about a romantic drama.
Now if a drama is romantic, that means that it has a certain kind of love story,
uh, probably between a man and a woman,
where they’re wanting to be a boyfriend or a girlfriend, or wanting to be
husband and wife, and share that kind of love together.
Right, in the first one... the first movie we’re talking about is a romantic
drama, and it’s called Letters to Juliet.
And in this movie, it follows Sophia, a young American woman, as she travels to
Verona, Italy.
Now this, uh, movie already has caught my interest because it’s called Letters
to Juliet.
I recognize that name Juliet, and I recognize the setting - Verona, Italy.
Why is that, Chip?
Well, that might be because you really like Shakespeare.
You are a fan of William Shakespeare’s work.
And my guess is, Chelsea, you know something about his work Romeo and Juliet, is
the correct?
That is correct.
OK.
All right, so this is a movie that takes place in Verona, Italy - Letters to
Juliet.
And this city is of course famous for Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet.
If you’ve ever studied that play; it is known as a masterpiece.
It takes place in Italy, and it stars two young lovers who run into a lot of
conflict between their family.
And you just have to read it to find out how it ends, if you’ve not already.
But this story - this movie kind of sounds like it is taking place in the same
setting, and maybe kind of with the same storyline.
OK, yeah, this storyline certainly sounds interesting.
The character in the movie, Sophia, answers an old letter to Juliet seeking
advice about love.
So this... uh... it sounds like as she’s responding to this letter, this
responding changes her life, and perhaps it teaches her about what love is.
Well, I am definitely going to check out that movie.
So whether it’s laughs, romance or adventure, you’ll find it at the movies this
summer.
There’s something for everyone.
Now a few minutes ago we talked about the word ”romantic,” which is an
adjective.
And here we see the word ”romance,” which is a noun.
And in this case, we’re just talking about a love story.
So maybe that’s your favorite type of movie.
Now Chip, we’ve talked about a lot of movies for the past few days.
I personally can’t wait for Toy Story 3.
Which movie are you looking most forward to?
Well, as a man who grew up in the ’80s, and as a... as a boy, a person who loved
the original Karate Kid movie, I’m pretty excited to see this year’s remake.
Well, we hope you’re excited to see some of these movies that we’ve talked about
this... uh, for this summer.
But we’ve got some more movie trailers for you to enjoy.
Enjoy Letters to Juliet, and then we’ll visit the Chat Room.
We’re leaving in 12 hours and you haven’t packed for Verona?
Close your eyes! Close your eyes!
It’s good, right?
Yeah.
Verona, Italy, where Romeo first met Juliet.
Sophia! Wherefore art thou, my sweet Sophia?
There is a place where the heartbroken leave notes, asking Juliet for her help.
It was there I discovered a letter that changed my life forever.
I didn’t go to Lorenzo, Juliet.
I promised I’d meet him to run away together.
But instead, I left him waiting for me.
Please, Juliet, tell me what I should do.
Love, Claire.
It’s written in 1957.
I have to write back!
May I ask which one of you wrote this letter to my grandmother?
I wrote that.
What were you thinking?
She deserved an answer.
Uh, excuse me, Claire?
Hi, my name is Sophie.
Juliet?
So you’ve come to find your Lorenzo.
Yes.
Of course a card or letter is just too simple.
May I come with you?
Yes, of course.
We’re looking for Lorenzo Bartolini.
I am Lorenzo Bartolini.
(Italian) Lorenzo.
I am Lorenzo.
(Italian) Lorenzo.
I am Lorenzo Bartolini!
Take him! Take him!
This is madness.
Charlie doesn’t approve, which makes this all the more fun.
What you’re doing for Claire is sweet.
It’s just that I’m genuinely worried for her.
I need more time with her.
This isn’t a good time because I’m in the middle of something.
It’s not supposed to be that way.
We’re supposed to want to be with each other all the time.
So isn’t your fiance starting to get just a tad lonely?
I doubt he even notices that I’m gone.
Do you think he’s still out there - Lorenzo?
Yeah.
(Music).
Oh, my god.
I’ve had the most incredible few days.
How many Sophies do you think there are on this planet?
Don’t wait 50 years before you find out.
It’s a love story. Baby, just say yes.
Oh! I’m so sorry!
Boston?
Yeah.
Gate 12.
I want to talk about the plane crash.
What about it?
I was in it.
So you were in the plane crash?
I mean I wasn’t supposed to be on the plane. But I was on it.
And there was this guy who was some sort of, like, secret agent or something.
Ocupado (Spanish).
And he killed everybody on board.
The pilotes are dead?
They had to be shot. By who? Me.
Actually, I shot the first pilot.
He shot the second one accidentally.
You know... one of those things.
(Music).
Mayday! Mayday! Mayday.
Next thing you know, I wake up. I’m in my room.
I have no idea how I got there.
And then I go to April’s fitting because I have to wear this ridiculous dress.
These other guys... These other agents come.
Miss Evans, would you join us inside the car for a moment?
They snatch me up.
Next thing you know, I’m in Grand Theft Auto on the I-93.
(Background Noise).
Hey, June, it’s a beautiful dress.
Wait a second.
It is wild.
Why are you touching my hand?
Because I’m here for you. It makes total sense. April’s getting married, and
that is stressful.
No, no, no, no. OK.
Hi, June, maybe I didn’t make it clear enough, but we’re gonna have to stick
together.
Sorry, who are you?
This is the guy.
I’m the guy.
He’s the guy.
I’m the guy.
Ronnie, listen, whatever happens...
For your own safety, please stay in the booth.
What are you talking about?
Oh, oh, everybody, get down.
No one follows us, or I’d kill myself and then her.
On three. Ready? Uh-huh. One...
Sorry, I panicked!
What number would you like?
Three. Yeah, let’s just stick with three. It’s good.
OK.
I’m out of here, Ken.
See you.
You are leaving work already?
Isn’t it a little early?
Yes, but I’m going to the movies this evening, so I’d like to get an early
dinner first.
Did you say you’re going to the movies?
How many movies are you planning on seeing?
Just one.
Then why did you say the movies - plural?
Oh, when we say the movies, we’re referring to the place where movies are shown.
Oh, the movie theater.
That’s right.
When people go to the movies, they’re going to the movie theater, and most
people just see one movie.
Oh, so that’s why this article in Studio Classroom says whether it’s laughs,
romance or adventure, you’ll find it at the movies this summer.
In other words, you’ll find it at the movie theater.
You got it.
Ashley, I don’t see a lot of movies, and I know you go to the movies a lot.
Do you have any tips for going to the movies?
Sure, you should always try to arrive at the theater early so you can get good
seats.
You mean I should ask the ticket seller in the box office for a good seat?
Oh, no, there’s no seat assignment in America.
You just go into the auditorium and find an available seat you like.
Really? Now that’s convenient.
Also, I really hate it when people’s cell phones go off in the middle of a
movie!
So be considerate of others and turn off your cell phone before the movie
starts.
Hmm, that’s good to remember.
I hate it when people talk while the movie is being shown.
Oh, I can’t stand that, either.
So, try not to comment on the movie while you are watching it.
Hey, thanks for those tips.
I should let you go.
Oh, yeah, I want to get a good seat.
See you.
Have a good time.
(Chinese).
Hi, everyone, I’m Michelle.
(Chinese).
And I know we have to say goodbye now.
keep up the good work.
Bye-bye.
You know, Tom Cruise is an actor I associate more with action, adventure and
drama - not comedy.
But there are one or two funny films that Tom Cruise has had short appearances
in, and his roles were actually quite funny.
So I’m sure Knight and Day should have some good laughs.
I think our next Studio Classroom Hollywood movie review happens sometime before
the big holiday season starts in November.
Now looking at tomorrow’s lesson, we’ll learn about a new weapon that could save
millions of lives.
Until then, everyone, have a good day.
(Music).
