(Music).
Hi, everyone.
And welcome to The Mall.
Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And friends, we have some great lessons for you.
We’re going to learn how to talk about animals.
Today’s lesson is called Animal Contest.
It should be interesting.
Well, I have something that I want to give you.
It is today’s FIND IT question.
What will Tom do for the Jungle Cafe’s contest?
What will Tom do for the Jungle Cafe’s contest?
Listen carefully.
I know that you can find it.
We have more information to help you with today’s lesson.
Let’s go and see Christina right now.
(Chinese).
(Backgroud Noise).
Do you like this animal?
Oh! It is uh, interesting.
Tom, did you draw this?
Yes. I drew this animal.
So do you like it?
Um... what kind of animal is this?
It’s a tigow.
A tigow?
What kind of animal is that?
Yes.
What kind of animal is that?
Well, it’s a very interesting animal.
It’s a tigow, of course!
I’m sure it is very interesting.
And Tom and Emma, we have some interesting things to talk about.
So can you help me teach?
Sure.
Yeah.
Let’s start.
All right.
Well friends, this week we are learning how to talk about animals in English.
And animal is a key word in this conversation.
Tom, can you help us?
What is an animal?
Well, an animal is something that is alive,
but not like a plant, like a tree or bush.
It’s something that can move around like a cat or dog or a bird or a horse.
Those are animals.
Yeah.
Sometimes we have animals in our house and those animals are called pets.
Yes.
So if you have an animal in your house, that means you have a pet, P-E-T, in
your house.
So you can have animals around you where you live.
You can see animals when you are outside.
Maybe you’ll also go to a special place called a zoo, Z-O-O.
When you go to a zoo, you can see many different kinds of animals.
Well, I do think it’s interesting, Tom, that you drew a picture of an
interesting animal.
Yes, I did.
I drew a picture of a tigow.
And I think it looks pretty good.
I’m glad I drew it.
Yeah.
Well, you know when you draw something, maybe you use a pencil or a pen.
You take a piece of paper and you draw.
You make it look like something on the paper.
You draw a picture, perhaps, of an animal.
You can draw a picture of an animal.
Some people draw pictures of people.
Now what about you?
Can you draw?
Now friends, it’s important to remember the past tense of this verb.
It is...
drew.
Tom drew this animal.
D-R-E-W.
So remember, we change draw to drew.
You can do it.
Good job.
Well friends, let’s review our key words from this section together.
Tom, can you help us out?
I’d be glad to.
Friends, the first key word is...
animal.
animal.
Cats are Doris’ favorite animals.
draw.
draw.
Danny can draw pictures of people really well.
Well done.
So be sure to practice these key words.
Now I think Tom has some more things to tell us about the animal that he drew.
So Tom, I’ll let you continue.
OK.
It’s part tiger and part cow.
Oh, I see.
Tigow.
It has a tiger’s head and a cow’s body.
It’s not a real animal.
I know.
So, Emma?
How’s the Jungle Cafe’s animal drawing contest going?
Is it for the mall’s fifth anniversary?
Yes.
It’s going really well.
Thanks for asking.
So can I enter my drawing?
So Emma and Tom, can we continue to teach together?
Of course.
But Emma, think about that.
Sounds good.
Well, now we know what a tigow is.
And Tom, can you help us understand it by telling us again?
Of course.
My great picture of this tigow.
It is part tiger and part cow.
You see, this picture looks like a tiger and a cow.
So I call it a tigow.
A tigow.
And it’s part tiger.
Tiger is a key word.
Well friends, a tiger is an animal.
A tiger is a very big cat.
Tigers are usually black and orange.
They have black and orange lines on their body.
That’s right.
Do any of you have a tiger for a pet?
I hope not,
because tigers are not pets.
They’re very dangerous.
They are very dangerous.
Now where can we see tigers?
Can we see them in the Jungle Cafe?
Well, hey, your table looks a little bit like a tiger.
At least it’s the same color as a tiger.
Yes, you’re right.
I do have a table here.
I’m sitting by a table that looks like a tiger.
Now tigers are interesting animals.
It’s fun to learn more about them.
And I do think that Tom’s drawing is interesting.
Now Tom, drawing is also a key word.
Can you help us understand that?
Well, of course.
Earlier we learned the word:
draw.
And so when you draw something, then you are making a drawing.
So I have a drawing right here.
It’s a drawing of a tigow.
So when you draw something, you are making a drawing.
Drawing is the noun.
Do you ever make drawings?
What kind of drawings do you make?
Well, Tom made an interesting drawing of a tigow.
But of course we learn that that is not a real animal.
You can’t see a tigow.
But I think Tom had fun drawing a tigow.
Well friends, for now let’s review our key words.
Emma, can you help us?
Sure, I can.
tiger.
tiger.
Tigers are very big cats.
And the second key word:
drawing.
drawing.
I like your drawing.
You drew a very nice picture.
Well, Tom has a question for Emma about his drawing.
And I think that Tom is waiting for an answer.
So let’s continue with this conversation.
I’m sorry, Tom.
The contest is just for children.
Oh, I see.
But you can be a judge.
That’s great!
I would be a very good judge.
OK.
Let’s practice.
Look at this drawing.
Hmm... That’s a very nice elephant.
Elephant?
This is not an elephant.
It’s a dolphin.
Oh, right.
But it has a really long nose.
Yes. The dolphin does have a long nose.
Well, we find out that the drawing is of a dolphin.
It’s not an elephant, is it, Tom?
No, it’s not an elephant.
But it kind of looks like an elephant because of its long nose.
And it’s got big ears too, like an elephant.
Those aren’t ears.
Oh.
True, it’s gray, like an elephant.
It has a long nose.
But it doesn’t look like an elephant.
Not at all.
Well, it’s good to keep talking about animals, right?
And we have another animal as a key word in this conversation.
It is...
elephant.
Now an elephant is a very big animal.
Elephants have very big ears.
And it’s true they have a very long nose.
Well, it’s not actually the elephant’s nose.
It’s the elephant’s trunk.
T-R-U-N-K.
Now Tom, have you ever seen an elephant?
I have seen an elephant.
But I usually see an elephant in the zoo.
So I can’t get too close to an elephant.
But I do know that elephants have very good memories.
Really?
Yeah.
I forgot all about that.
Well, you’re not an elephant.
I’m glad.
Elephants are so big.
One time I rode on an elephant, it was just so big.
It was a lot of fun.
That doesn’t sound like fun to ride on an elephant.
That means you sit on an elephant and the elephant takes you to a place.
Well, we have another key word in this conversation.
It is an adjective.
long.
Now to see how long something is, you measure it from one end to another.
Now when you’re talking about an animal, you can use this word ”long” to
describe the animal or to talk about it.
You can say:
This animal has a very long body.
Or that animal has long legs.
Or a giraffe, like we have here in the jungle cafe,
giraffes have long necks.
And you talked about animals with long bodies.
Some dogs have really long bodies.
That is true.
Well friends, we also found the answer to our FIND IT question in this
conversation.
Emma, can you help us?
I sure can.
What will Tom do for the Jungle Cafe’s contest?
He will be a judge.
Did you find it?
I hope you did.
And I’m sure that you, Tom, will be a good judge for the drawing contest.
Now friends, let’s review our key words from this section.
Tom, can you help us out?
All right.
The first one:
elephant.
elephant.
Elephants are really big animals.
long.
long.
Mike has really long legs.
He is very tall.
Great job, everyone.
Well, it’s time for us to take a break.
But we’ll be right back.
