(Music).
Hi, everyone.
And welcome to a new week of learning together right here at The Mall.
My name is Andrea.
And I’m so glad you joined us for a new week.
Now what are we learning about this week?
Well, this week we are learning how to talk about vacations.
Woo! I like talking about vacations.
And I hope that you do too.
I have something for you.
I know you know what it is.
It is today’s FIND IT question.
What was Pam’s plan?
What was Pam’s plan?
Well, listen carefully for the answer in today’s conversations.
I know that you can find it.
Now what is next on our plan?
Well, it’s time for us to go to the Information Desk.
Christina has information that will help you with today’s lesson.
Here we go.
Hi, friends.
Welcome to the Information Desk.
(Chinese).
And now let’s visit our friends at the mall.
Did I tell you guys?
I am taking a vacation next week.
Really?
That’s great!
I know.
I need a vacation.
I do too.
What are your plans?
Are you going somewhere?
Yes.
I need your opinion.
My plan was a trip with my mom to Norwood.
Norwood?
Where is that?
Welcome back, everyone.
You know, I always think it is fun to talk about vacation plans.
I like to ask people what they are going to do on a vacation.
Or when they come back again, it’s fun to hear all about vacations.
Well, I’ve been talking about this word ”vacation” a lot,
so let’s look at it together.
It is a key word:
vacation.
Now a vacation is a holiday.
When you are on a vacation, that means you are not working and you are not going
to school.
Now when you take a vacation, you can leave the place where you live and go to
another place.
Maybe you visit another country or another city when you are on a vacation.
Or maybe you take a vacation to visit family and friends.
Vacations are fun.
Now you can take a vacation and... and not go anywhere.
You can take a vacation at home.
But it sounds like Pam is planning a vacation to go somewhere.
If you could take a vacation, where would you like to go?
Well, let’s continue learning from this conversation.
Pam tells us about her plan.
And that is the answer to our FIND IT question.
Did you find it?
The question is:
What was Pam’s plan?
What was Pam’s plan?
Her plan was a trip with her mom to Norwood.
Well, that sounds like a fun plan.
Here we see the word:
trip.
Trip is also a key word.
Now when you take a trip or when you go on a trip,
that means you leave the place where you live; you go somewhere else for a short
time,
and then you come back again.
Now you can take a short trip.
Maybe you just take a day trip.
You just leave your house in the morning, goes somewhere else to enjoy the day,
and then come back again.
Or you can take a weekend trip.
That means you go somewhere else for the weekend.
Some vacations can be trips.
You can also take a very long trip.
Maybe you take a trip around the world.
Wow! Now that would be a very fun trip.
I would like a long vacation to take a trip around the world.
Well friends, let’s review these key words together now.
The first one is...
vacation.
vacation.
My family is on a vacation in Canada.
We are playing and relaxing there.
The next one is...
trip.
trip.
Let’s take a trip this summer.
Where can we go?
Where can we go right now?
Well, we can go and listen to Conversation B.
Good job.
Norwood is a small town about six hours east of here.
We have relatives there.
But are you thinking about another plan?
Yes.
My friend Susan e-mailed me.
I can stay with her for a week.
Where does she live?
New York.
I’m from New York.
I know.
Go to New York.
In this conversation, we find out where Norwood is.
Pam tells us that Norwood is a small town about six hours east of where she is.
Now why would she and her mom want to go to Norwood?
Well, we find out that Pam has relatives there.
Pam has relatives there.
And relative is a key word,
so let’s look at it together.
A relative is someone who is in your family.
Your aunt is a relative.
Your uncle is a relative.
Maybe you also have cousins.
If your aunt or uncle have children, then they are your cousins.
And all of those people in your family are your relatives.
Now it’s always fun to visit relatives.
Do you like to visit your relatives?
Maybe you see your relatives for special events or special holidays.
Or you can also take a trip to visit relatives if they live far away.
Well, Pam did have a plan to visit her relatives.
Now she’s thinking of another plan.
Her friend Susan e-mailed her.
And she can stay with her for a week.
Now let’s look at this key word.
It is the verb:
stay.
stay.
Now when you stay somewhere, that means you live there for a short time.
When you take a trip, you stay in a new city.
But you don’t stay there forever.
You come home again.
When you stay somewhere, it’s usually for a short time.
If someone goes on a vacation, you can ask them:
Where did you stay on your vacation?
Maybe you stayed at a hotel.
Or maybe you stayed at a friend’s house.
Or you can also stay with relatives.
OK.
Well friends, now let’s review these key words together.
Please say them with me.
relative.
relative.
Wanda has some relatives in China.
Her family is from there.
The next one is... stay.
stay.
Ronda in staying at Grandma’s house tonight.
She is coming home tomorrow.
Well done, everyone.
Now let’s continue with Conversation C.
Do you have enough money for a trip to New York?
I think so.
I can stay with Susan.
So I don’t need a hotel.
That’s great.
So you just pay for a plane ticket.
And food.
And the subway.
Is the subway very expensive?
No.
New York, here comes Pam!
Yay!
Now York, here comes Pam.
Well, that sounds fun.
Pam might visit New York.
She might take a trip to New York.
So Amy says:
New York, here comes Pam.
Now this is a way to show that Amy is excited that Pam might visit New York.
Or if you are excited about taking a trip, you might use a phrase like this.
For example, if I am going to take a trip to Hong Kong, I can say:
Hong Kong, here I come.
It shows that I am excited about a trip or a short vacation to Hong Kong.
So next time you visit a place, you can say this:
Canada, here comes Jack.
Or Canada, here I come.
I’ll say that next time I go home.
Well, is Pam going to stay at a hotel in New York?
No.
Remember we learned that she can stay with her friend Susan.
Now it’s important to remember that you stay at a hotel.
Remember you stay at places for a short time.
So if you take a trip or take a vacation, you stay at a hotel.
Maybe you stay at a hotel for a week.
You do not live at a hotel.
You just stay there.
You live in your home,
the place where you usually are.
Well, we learned something else in this conversation.
We find out that Pam will need to pay money for the subway.
Yes, New York is a city that has a subway.
Now a subway is a train that is underground.
Subways are very convenient to take when you’re visiting different cities.
They’re pretty easy to take.
And they usually do not cost a lot of money.
Do you have a subway in this city where you live?
Now some cities have different names for their subways.
They might have a... a name that’s special for that city.
But what it is called around the world is a subway.
It’s important to know that.
When you’re traveling, you can ask someone:
Where is the subway?
Or:
Can you tell me where the subway is?
Well, I do know that subway is a key word.
So let’s review it together now.
subway.
subway.
In the city, many people don’t use cars.
They take the subway.
Now we are going to take a break.
