(Music).
Hi, everyone.
And welcome to The Mall.
My name is Andrea.
Today our lessons continue as we learn how to talk about different kinds of
transportation and going places.
Well, we do have a lot to learn together.
I’m glad you joined us again for the ride.
Well, here is your FIND IT question for today.
I know that you can find the answer in our lesson.
How long is the bus ride to Jacksonville?
Jacksonville is a city.
I’ll say the question again.
How long is the bus ride to Jacksonville?
Well, listen carefully to find that answer.
Now we have some more information that will help you with today’s lesson.
So let’s go and see Christina.
Hi, friends.
Welcome to the Information Desk.
(Chinese).
I think it’s a good idea to plan things ahead.
And now let’s go visit our friends at the mall.
Hi, Emma.
You look happy.
I am.
I just heard some great news.
What?
My favorite niece is getting married!
That’s great.
When is the wedding?
In October.
It’s going to be on the beach in Florida.
Will you go?
Of course!
Will you fly?
Maybe.
But airline tickets are kind of expensive.
I’m considering driving.
Welcome, everybody.
Well Tom, you look happy.
Well Andrea, I am happy.
I’m happy to be here teaching with you and... and helping our friends.
Andrea, you look happy too.
Well, I am happy to have you here.
And friends, in our conversation, Pam tells Emma:
You look happy.
You look happy.
This is something that you can say when you see that someone looks happy.
Or you can use it in other ways.
You look sad.
Or you look hungry.
You look sick.
You look tired.
Are you OK?
That’s right.
Those are all very good ways to use this phrase:
You look...
Now friends, remember, use this if you only... only if you want to show people
that you care about them.
Don’t just tell them that they look like something and then walk away.
But this shows that you want to talk about something with them.
Now that is a very good point, Tom.
Thank you.
Well friends, our friend Emma is happy.
She just heard some great news.
What is the great news, Tom?
The great news is that someone is getting married.
Emma’s favorite niece is getting married.
Yes, her favorite niece.
So her brother or her sister’s daughter is getting married.
That is her niece.
Now she might go to the wedding.
At the end of our conversation, Emma says that airline tickets are kind of
expensive.
They’re kind of expensive.
Well, this is kind of hard to learn, isn’t it, Gabe?
It can be kind of hard to learn.
It’s not really hard to learn.
It’s... it’s only kind of hard to learn.
That’s right.
So if you want to use this phrase:
kind of,
that means it’s not really something.
It’s only a little something.
Or maybe... maybe it’s something.
Like Emma says, the tickets are kind of expensive.
Maybe they’re not really expensive.
They’re kind of expensive.
You can say the movie is kind of interesting or this magazine is kind of
interesting to read.
Well, then you might want to consider reading it or looking at it.
And our next key word is...
consider.
Now friends, if you consider doing something, that means you are thinking about
it.
You haven’t made a decision, but you’re considering it.
You’re thinking about what to do.
That’s right.
Here is a good phrase to use:
consider it done.
If your boss tells you to do something and you’re going to do it right away or
soon as possible, you can say:
Boss, consider it done. I’m doing it now.
And in our conversation, Emma is considering driving to the wedding.
So she’s thinking about driving.
Well friends, I hope that you are considering the chance to review our key words
together.
We’re going to do it right now.
The first one is...
kind of.
kind of.
I’m going to sleep now.
I’m kind of tired.
Let’s consider this next key word.
The word:
consider.
consider.
I’m considering getting a dog.
What do you think?
Well, we can talk about that together.
For now let’s continue with our next conversation.
Florida is a long drive from here.
I know.
Do you have a road map here?
I want to know the exact distance.
I have a road atlas here in the store.
Let’s look at that.
(Music).
Hmmm... let’s see...
Florida is about seven hundred and seventy miles from here.
Can you drive there in one day?
One long day, maybe.
Well, Emma is considering driving to the wedding,
but she first wants to know what the distance would be.
And friends, distance is a key word.
The distance is how long it takes to get from one place to another place.
You can ask someone:
What is the distance from your home to school?
How long does it take to go from your home to your school?
That’s right.
You can use this word in a sentence just like this with the word:
from.
What is the distance from this place to this place?
Another word you can use with distance is ”between”.
What’s the distance between these two places.
Well, we find out that the distance for Emma would be pretty far for her to go
to Florida.
Tom, do you remember what the distance would be?
Uh, the distance is seven hundred and seventy miles.
Now that is very long.
That’s very far.
That is a long distance.
Wow, seven hundred and seventy miles.
Friends, mile is a key word here.
A mile is a way that you can talk about how long the distance is.
You can say:
I walk three miles to school.
That tells someone how long the distance is.
And we see here that if Emma wants to go to this wedding, she has to go seven
hundred and seventy miles.
That is not close, friends.
That is very far away.
And mile is...
A mile is something that you would use to talk about distance when you are in
America.
Not all countries use miles to talk about distance.
Well friends, let’s now review these key words together.
The first one is...
distance.
distance.
What’s the distance from my house to yours?
The next one is...
mile.
mile.
James walks three miles to work every day.
Now let’s continue with Conversation C.
You could ride the bus.
Maybe.
Do you have any bus schedules here?
No, but we can look online.
What did you find?
The bus ride is about twenty-one hours to Jacksonville.
Twenty-one hours?
That’s a long ride.
How much does a ticket cost?
It cost a hundred and twenty dollars if you buy it seven days ahead.
But you change buses three times.
No thanks.
(Music).
Well, Emma is considering all the different ways that she can go to the wedding.
She can go by airplane.
She can drive there or she can take a bus.
In this conversation, we find out how long the bus ride would be.
And friends, that’s the answer to our FIND IT question.
Here is the question again.
How long is the bus ride to Jacksonville?
How long is the bus ride to Jacksonville?
The bus ride to Jacksonville is twenty-one hours.
Twenty-one hours?
Yeah.
Wow, that is a long time.
That is a long time.
That will probably take more than one day.
Probably.
That’s true.
Well friends, we find out that the ticket is actually kind of cheap.
It’s not very expensive if you buy it seven days ahead.
Now if you do something ahead of time, that means it’s in the future.
So if she wants to take the bus on Saturday, this Saturday she has to buy the
tickets.
Seven days ahead.
So when would she buy the tickets, Tom?
She needs to buy the tickets the Saturday before she goes.
That’s it.
So seven days ahead.
Seven days ahead.
Our key word is ahead.
Let’s review it.
ahead.
David is ready for his trip next month.
He always plans ahead.
Well, let’s take a break and then we will be right back.
