(Music).
Hi, everyone.
And welcome to The Mall.
Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
I’m so glad you joined all of us here again today.
Now we continue to learn how to talk about transportation and going places.
Wow, we have a lot to learn.
Well friends, I have something for you to find.
Here is today’s FIND IT question.
What is Emma thinking about?
I’ll say that question again.
What is Emma thinking about?
Well friends, as you listen to today’s lesson, I hope that you are thinking
about finding the answer.
Well, Christina has some more things for you to think about.
Let’s go see her now.
Hi, friends. Welcome to the Information Desk.
(Chinese).
You can ask:
How much is the bus fare?
OK. Now let’s visit our friends at The Mall.
Hi, Emma!
Hey, Pam, are you ready for our bike ride?
Not yet, Jack!
But I will be when I get off work in twenty minutes.
Do you want to come with us, Emma?
Where are you going?
We’re going to ride into the country and visit my cousin’s farm.
No thanks.
But have fun!
Emma is busy.
She’s planning a trip.
Well, Emma is busy.
She is planning a trip.
Now friends, I hope that you are not too busy to look at these key words with
me.
Well, we find out that Jack and Pam are going on a bike ride.
Now where are they going to go to?
Well, Jack tells us that they’re going to ride into the country and visit his
cousin’s farm.
Well, this sounds like a fun bike ride.
They’re going to leave the city and go into the country.
Well friends, country is a key word here.
When you are in the country, that means you are away from the city.
I like going to the country.
It’s usually a lot quieter in the country.
It’s not as busy.
When you’re driving your car in the country, there are not many cars around you.
Many people live in the country.
You can ask someone:
Do you live in a city?
Or do you live in the country?
When you drive or when you go to the country, you often see beautiful places.
You can also see a lot of nature when you are in the country.
You don’t see as many buildings as you do in the city.
And when you are in the country, you can also see farms.
Now that’s another key word.
A farm is a place that is usually in the country.
Now if you go to a farm, what can you see?
Well, you might see animals at a farm.
You might see cows and pigs and horses.
Those are all different farm animals.
Now you can see animals at a farm.
But sometimes farmers, the people who live at the farm, also grow food.
So you might see fields of different food that is growing.
Now why are farms in the country?
Well, usually you need more space to have a farm.
That’s why you find them in the country.
Now friends, have you ever been to a farm?
You know, I used to live on a farm.
It’s a great place to relax.
It’s nice and quiet.
And there are interesting things to see.
So maybe you can visit a farm sometime.
But for now you can review these key words with me.
So please let’s say our key words together now.
Our first key word is...
country.
country.
Cows and horses live near Gina’s home in the country.
The next one is...
farm.
farm.
Lots of animals live on Paul’s farm.
Well, let’s continue our lesson right now.
A trip!
Where are you going, Emma?
To my niece’s wedding in Florida.
Fun!
How will you get there?
I’m not sure yet.
I’m still deciding.
I’d advise you to take the train.
I’m thinking about that.
The train would be fun.
It would!
You can see beautiful scenery and let someone else do the driving!
So Emma is taking a trip.
Now do you remember where she is going?
Well friends, she just told us that she is going to her niece’s wedding in
Florida.
Now that sounds like a fun trip.
Emma tells us that she is also thinking about something.
And friends, that is the answer to our FIND IT question.
Now did you find it?
I’m sure you did.
Well, let’s look at it together.
The question is:
What is Emma thinking about?
What is Emma thinking about?
Well, she is thinking about taking the train.
She says:
The train would be fun.
Well, in our conversation, Jack advises Emma to take the train.
Jack advises Emma.
Well, now I advise you to listen carefully as we look at this key word.
It is the verb:
advise.
Say that again.
advise.
Now when you advise someone to do something,
you share an idea or you share what you think they should do.
Maybe you are shopping with a friend.
You don’t know what to buy.
Maybe your friend can advise you on what to buy.
Now we also learn this word as a noun.
It is advice.
Now the spelling changes and we say it in a different way.
When you give someone advice, you tell them what to do.
When you advise someone to do something, well, then you tell them what you think
they should do.
So advice, A-D-V-I-C-E, is the noun.
Advise, A-D-V-I-S-E, is the verb.
Well friends, I advise you right now to review this key word with me.
Be sure to say the key word sentence too.
advise.
advise.
Should Marilyn walk or take the bus?
What do you advise?
Well, I advise you to listen carefully as our conversations continue.
Can we look at train schedules online, Pam?
Sure.
Let’s see...
Here we are.
Train 322 departs St. Louis at 8:30 a.m. October twelveth and arrives in Chicago
at 2:14 p.m..
Then Train 30 leaves Chicago at 7:05 p.m. and arrives in Washington, D.C. at
1:30 p.m. the next day, October thirteenth.
Train 97 leaves Washington, D.C. at 7:30 p.m. and arrives in Jacksonville that
next day, October fourteenth at 9:30 a.m..
The fare is three hundred eight dollars.
I’d be on the train two nights.
But that would be fun!
You could get a roomette.
I could!
And the fare is good.
OK. I’ll take the train!
Pam helps Emma look at the train schedule online.
Now what is a train schedule?
Well, a train schedule tells you when trains come and when trains go.
We can say when they arrive or when the trains depart.
Now when a train departs a place, like a city, that means it leaves the city.
You always have to make sure you look at the time the train departs.
You don’t want to be late.
Now on a train schedule, you can also find how much the train costs.
Or you can find the fare.
Now fare is a key word.
F-A-R-E.
Now the fare for a train is how much it costs, how much money you have to pay to
take the train.
What is the fare?
Now you do have to pay the fare on a train.
But you also pay fare or you pay the fair on other things that you take.
For example, what is the bus fare to take the city bus?
Or what is the bus fare from one city to another city?
Well, they look at the train schedule together.
Now it sounds like it would be fun,
but taking the train would be a lot longer.
Do you remember how long Emma would be on the train?
Well, we found out that she would be on the train for two nights.
Now that’s a long time to be on the train.
But we find out that Emma can get a roomette.
Now a roomette is a small room that you can get on the train.
You usually have a very small bed in a roomette.
So as the train is taking you to the place you want to go, you can also sleep.
It’s kind of like having a very small hotel room on the train,
but it is called a roomette.
Have you ever had a roomette on a train?
They are very special,
but usually the fare for a roomette is a little higher or a lot higher than just
buying a seat.
Well friends, let’s review this word, our key word here together.
It is...
fare.
fare.
The bus fare from here to the city is five dollars.
Good job.
Now let’s take a break and then we will be right back.
