(Music).
Hi, everyone.
And welcome to The Mall.
My name is Andrea.
Today we continue our lessons as we learn how to talk about transportation and
going places.
The title of our lesson today is Many Kinds of Transportation.
And it’s true.
We do have many kinds of transportation to choose from.
Right now, can you think of different kinds of transportation?
Well, you might learn about those in our lesson.
And I hope you’ll also learn some new things too.
Well, here is your FIND IT question.
Where does the trip to Africa go?
I’ll say it again.
Where does the trip to Africa go?
Now where are we going to go?
Well, we are going to the Information Desk.
(Chinese).
Have you ever seen a donkey?
Well, I think it’s time to visit our friends at the mall.
The mall’s travel agency had a lot of great information.
I know.
If we took this tour to Antarctica, we’d fly to South America.
Then we’d go by ship.
And that trip would only cost us seven thousand dollars each!
It’s expensive, but I can dream, can’t I?
Of course, and so can I!
If we took this trip to Africa, we’d travel by plane, train, bus, and camel!
(Music).
By plane, train, bus and camel.
Wow, those are many different kinds of transportation.
And friends, today we continue to learn how to talk about different kinds of
transportation.
Well, if you take a trip somewhere, you could take a tour.
Now Tom is here with us again today.
Tom, can you help us understand this word ”tour”?
Of course.
When you take a tour or when you go on a tour, that means you go somewhere.
You don’t know that place,
so you need to have someone else take you around and show you everything about
that place.
That’s called a tour.
And if you consider taking a tour, that means it’s a little easier for you to
plan.
Someone else does most of the planning for you.
And they help you see all the important things.
Well, this tour sounds exciting.
A tour to Antarctica.
They would fly to South America and then go by ship.
Now ship is another key word here.
A ship is a big boat.
A ship is usually on the ocean going from one place to another place.
Ships can go very long distances.
That’s right.
And of course, there are many different kinds of ships.
Some ships only take things from one place to another.
Other ships take people from one place to another.
And there are some cruise ships.
If you go on a cruise ship,
that means you’re going to have a very nice and relaxing time on a cruise ship.
Oh, I dream of being on a cruise ship again someday.
And friends, the verb ”dream” is also a key word.
Now when you dream about doing something, that means you really want to do it.
And you hope that you can do it someday.
That’s right.
We see that this trip will cost seven thousand dollars each!
But Amy says:
It’s expensive, but I can dream, can’t I?
Yes, you can always dream.
Well friends, let’s review these key words together now.
The first one is...
tour.
tour.
We don’t have to do the planning for our trip.
We’re taking a tour.
ship.
ship.
Vick took a ship across the ocean.
dream.
dream.
Allen dreams about marrying a beautiful girl.
Great job, everyone.
Well, now let’s continue with Conversation B.
That tour must be the one to Egypt.
Yes, it is.
I’ve always wanted to go there,
but I don’t want to ride a camel.
Why not?
Do you know they’re called ”ships of the desert”?
Why?
Because they move across the desert sand so easily.
Like ships in water.
That’s right.
And they can also travel seventeen days without drinking water.
(Music).
Well, we learned some interesting things about camels in this conversation.
Now a camel is a big animal that you often see in the desert.
Tom, what is something you remember about a camel?
Well, it’s pretty amazing that a camel can travel for seventeen days without
drinking any water.
And camels are also called ”ships of the desert”.
Yes, ships of the desert.
And Pam tells us why they have this name.
It’s because they move across the desert sand so easily.
Well, I think the camels are made for the desert.
Let’s now look at this key word:
sand.
sand.
Now sand is actually just very, very small pieces of rock.
But there are many, many, many, many, many, many of these small pieces of rock
put together to make sand.
That’s right.
And there is a lot of sand in a desert.
Another place you might find sand is near the ocean on a beach.
There’s a lot of sand on a beach.
Andrea, do you know what I do not like?
Uh... Tom, what don’t you like?
I don’t like getting sand in my eye.
That really hurts.
Oh, I understand.
Well, there’s also something called a sandstorm.
Now this is a time when the wind is very, very strong,
and the sand does not stay on the ground.
It comes up into the air and it is blowing around.
And then you might get sand in your eye.
Some places around the world do have sandstorms.
That’s right. And sandstorms can be pretty dangerous too.
There’s an adjective that has this word ”sand” in it.
It is the word:
sandy.
And of course, a sandstorm is very sandy.
Well, if our friends do take this tour to Egypt, they will see a lot of sand in
the desert.
Uh, wait a minute.
I think we just found something very important in this conversation.
Yes, we did.
Let’s look at our FIND IT question again.
The question is:
Where does the trip to Africa go?
Where does the trip to Africa go?
That trip to Africa goes to Egypt.
And Egypt is a country in Africa.
Egypt is a very interesting place to visit with a lot of history and a lot of
sand.
So let’s review that key word together.
sand.
sand.
Carl likes to walk in the sand on the beach.
And I’m sure that you would like to learn more.
So let’s continue with Conversation C.
Wow.
Camels are pretty interesting.
There are some interesting kinds of transportation.
There are.
Read this!
Around the world, people use many ways to get from place to place.
In some places riding camels, elephants or donkeys is popular.
In places with lots of water, boats take people around.
Many big cities have mass transit systems.
In Bangkok, people ride the sky train.
These trains carry people above the traffic.
(Music).
Well, in this conversation and paragraph,
we’re talking about interesting ways that you can travel around the world or
transportation around the world.
Around the world.
We see this paragraph starts out around the world.
So these are three good words you can use to start a sentence or a paragraph.
If you want to talk about things in the world or things all over the world, you
can say:
Around the world...
And then keep talking.
Well, here in our paragraph, we’re talking about transportation around the
world.
Around the world people use many ways to get from one place to another.
And we talk about some interesting ways like riding a camel or an elephant or a
donkey.
Now Tom, it would be interesting if we rode elephants around the mall.
Um, yes, it would be very interesting if we had elephants in the mall.
But I don’t think we have any elephants to ride here in the mall.
And we don’t have camels either, do we?
No, because we don’t have a lot of sand.
Oh, right.
Well, what about donkeys?
Uh, in the mall?
Yeah.
Well, that would be nice too,
but I don’t think we have donkeys here either.
Hmm... Well, we... we should consider that.
We should talk about that later.
For now let’s consider this key word:
donkey.
Now a donkey is an animal.
A donkey is smaller than a horse.
And a donkey has longer ears.
A donkey.
And do you know what a donkey sounds like?
I’m kind of embarrassed,
but can... can I... can I try to sound like a donkey?
Well Tom, that would be great.
OK.
I think it sounds like this.
(Backgroud Noise).
That’s a donkey.
Oh.
Try it at home.
Well, that... that... that sounds good.
Mmhm.
Yeah. Maybe we don’t want to get donkeys at the mall.
Yeah.
Especially if there were a lot of donkeys...
Yeah.
That might sound weird.
That... that would.
I’m glad that some people can use donkeys for transportation.
Donkeys are animals that can walk over many different kinds of land.
There very strong and they can also carry things.
You know, it is so interesting to learn about different kinds of transportation.
Well, now it’s time for us to review this key word.
Tom, can you help us?
Yes, the word:
donkey.
donkey.
That’s not a horse.
It’s a donkey.
I see.
Well friends, let’s take a break and then wewill be right back.
