(Music).
Hi, everyone.
And welcome to The Mall.
My name is Andrea.
It’s always nice to see you here again.
Today we continue to learn how to talk about transportation.
Now what different kinds of transportation did you take today?
Well, we have some more things to talk about,
so thanks for joining us.
I have something for you.
It is your FIND IT question.
Here it is.
Who did Pam read about?
I’ll say it again.
Who did Pam read about?
Well, we know that Pam likes to read.
She works at the bookstore.
I wonder who she read about.
Now let’s learn more at the Information Desk.
Hello.
Welcome to the Information Desk.
(Chinese).
So it’s one kilometer.
OK. It’s time to visit our friends at the mall.
Hi, Pam.
Hi, Amy.
Hi, Jason. What’s up?
Nothing much.
Hey, do either of you know where I can get a good scooter?
Don’t you already have a scooter?
Yes, but it is old,
and it broke down.
Uh-oh. Where?
In some sand by the river.
I wanted to get closer to the water.
He should have ridden a camel!
(Music).
(Backgroud Noise).
He should have ridden a camel.
Well, it would be very fun to see Jason riding a camel, wouldn’t it, Tom?
That’s right.
And his scooter got stuck in the sand,
so it’s kind of like a camel, a sinking camel.
Right, that’s true. Well, poor Jason.
We find out that his scooter broke down.
Well friends, let’s take a look at this word:
scooter.
It is another kind of transportation.
A scooter is smaller than a motorcycle,
but it’s something that you can ride.
It can take you from place to place.
That’s right.
It’s smaller than a motorcycle, but it’s not a bicycle.
Remember, a scooter has an engine.
It has something that... You need a key to start,
and so you can take a scooter and go a lot faster than a bicycle.
Right.
So when you’re using a scooter, you’re not getting exercise.
The scooter has power and takes you from place to place unless your scooter
breaks down.
Right?
That’s right.
That happened to Jason.
His scooter broke down.
Well, let’s look at this key word.
It is an idiom.
break down.
Now when something breaks down, that means it doesn’t work anymore.
It has a problem and it doesn’t do what it is supposed to do.
So his scooter broke down.
That means he cannot use his scooter anymore.
That’s right.
And lots of things can break down.
If you are driving a car and it breaks down, that means you can’t use it
anymore.
Or maybe a bus might break down.
But I have a question.
Can an animal break down?
Well, no.
An animal cannot break down.
An animal like a camel might hurt itself,
but an animal can’t break down.
That’s right.
It might get tired but we don’t say that it breaks down.
But Jason’s scooter did break down.
Well Tom, do things at the movie theater ever break down?
Mm, sometimes,
but they don’t break down when I’m working there.
Ah, well, I do remember that the heater broke down a while ago.
Ah, that’s right.
I wasn’t working when it broke down.
If I was working, everything would be OK and nothing would break down at the
theater.
That’s our Tom. All right, friends.
Now let’s review these key words together.
The first one is...
scooter.
scooter.
David rides his scooter to school every day.
The next words:
break down.
Say it again.
break down.
I need a ride.
My car broke down.
Oh, I... I hope that you can fix your... your car.
If something does break down, you want to find a way to fix it so that you can
use it again.
Well, now let’s continue with Conversation B.
What?
We were just talking about riding camels.
Oh.
But a scooter is much better for going around the city.
I think so.
I need something with an engine!
I read about a guy who traveled around the world without any motorized
transportation.
Who is he?
Here’s the article about him in Adventure magazine.
(Music).
Fifty c.c.?
Yeah, fifty c.c..
It’s... it’s smaller, but it’s very fun.
Oh.
Well, that’s great.
Oh, hi, everyone.
Welcome back.
Well, Tom and I were just talking about scooters.
And in our conversation, we find out that a scooter is much better for going
around a city than a camel.
Well, I agree with that.
How about you, Tom?
I do too.
I think it would be more fun.
Actually, riding a camel would be pretty fun.
And there is a phrase in here:
We were just talking about something.
Pam says:
We were just talking about riding camels.
Well, we were just talking about riding scooters.
If you’re having a conversation with someone and another person joins the
conversation, you might use this phrase.
For example:
We were just talking about going to see that movie.
Would you like to come with us?
We were just talking about how good the food was.
I hope you get a chance to try some of that food.
And Pam and Amy were just talking about camels in the desert.
So I think Jason was a little confused.
But now he also understands.
Well, we think that there’s a key word that we should look at.
Uh, I hope you want to look at it.
Tom, do you want to?
I what to look at this word.
The word is engine.
And an engine is a very important part of a scooter.
It’s a very important part of a car or a bus or an airplane.
These kinds of transportation all have engines.
An engine is.. is what gives transportation power.
It is the engine that makes it move.
And if the engine breaks down, well, then you have some trouble with your
transportation.
If you are in a race with a motorcycle or a car, then before the race starts,
someone will say:
OK, drivers, start your engines.
(Backgroud Noise).
And the transportation with the most powerful engine will probably win.
Well friends, we also found something very important in this conversation.
Did you find it?
Here is the question.
Who did Pam read about?
Who did Pam read about?
Pam read about a guy who traveled around the world without any motorized
transportation.
Ah...
Wow, that sounds interesting.
He didn’t use motorized transportation.
That means he did not use any transportation that has an engine.
That’s right.
Motorized mean something with an engine.
I see.
Well, let’s review this key word together now.
Say it with me.
It is...
engine.
engine.
Kevin’s car goes really fast because it has a big engine.
Well, let’s read together now about this interesting man.
Here we go.
In 1999, Mike Horn began his first big adventure:
traveling around the world at the equator.
He traveled for seventeen months from June 1999 to October 2000.
He went alone and didn’t use any motorized transportation.
He hiked, swam, canoed, biked and sailed the forty-six thousand six hundred and
seventy kilometers.
Wow.
That’s great.
Yes.
But I don’t want an adventure.
I just want to get to places around town!
(Music).
Well, Jason doesn’t want a big adventure like Mike Horn.
But it is interesting to learn about his adventure around the world.
That’s right.
He went around the world what is known as the middle of the world,
the equator.
The equator is also the hottest part of the world.
Wow.
Yes. And he traveled without using any motorized transportation.
So how did he get around, Tom?
Well, he went in five different ways.
He hiked.
He swam.
He canoed or he used a kind of boat called a canoe.
He also biked.
And he sailed around the world.
And we are going to learn two of those verbs that you just said.
They are our key words.
And the first one is...
bike.
bike.
Now when you bike somewhere, that means you use a bicycle,
or we sometimes also call this a bike.
So bike can be a noun as in what you use or what you sit on to move around.
But it is also a verb.
That’s right.
Mike Horn bikes around the world.
Or he bikes some parts around the world.
Now we can also use this word like this:
Let’s bike together.
That means let’s take a bike ride together.
So you can bike together or you can also sail together.
Mike Horn also sailed.
Now sail is a verb.
When you sail, you are in a special boat called a sail boat.
Now a sail boat is not motorized.
It uses wind to move.
And when you’re moving, then you sail across the water.
And we hope that it was smooth sailing.
If it’s smooth sailing, that means there were very few problems.
He had very little trouble, I hope.
I hope it was smooth sailing.
I hope so too,
because he traveled forty-six thousand six hundred and seventy kilometers.
That’s a long way.
That is a huge distance.
Well friends, kilometer is also a key word here.
A kilometer is another way that you can see how long or how big a distance is.
That’s right.
And we... we know that a kilometer is not as long as a mile.
A kilometer is a thousand meters.
And there’s another way to say kilometer.
You can say kilometer or kilometer.
All right?
So say that with me.
kilometer.
kilometer.
Good point.
Now say these key words with us as we review.
bike.
bikie.
Jim and Cindy biked to the river yesterday.
sail.
sail.
Lance plans to sail around the world in his boat.
kilometer.
Or:
kilometer.
How many kilometres did you walk to get here?
Well done today, everyone.
You deserve a break and thenwe will be right back.
