That’s another way of asking,
”How are you?”.
You can find out about a person’s life.
You can ask,
”What’s new with you?”.
Or ”What’s new at work?”.
”What’s new at school?”.
”What’s new with your family?”.
These are great questions for starting a conversation.
What is new at the mall?

Now we learned that ”What’s new?” is another way of singing,
”How are you?”.
Usually when we start a conversation with someone, we say:
How are you?
Well, you can also say:
What’s new?
Now why do we say:
”What’s new?”.
Well, it’s a way to find out information about a person’s life.
You’re asking:
What’s new with you?
What’s new with your family?
What’s new at work?
Or what’s new at school?
You want to find out about a person’s life.
Well friends, find out is one of our key words.
When you find out something, that means you find the answer.
If you don’t know the answer, you want to find out.
Now how can we find out about different information?
Well, last week we talked about computers and the Internet.
You can find out information by using the Internet, by going online.
You can google someone’s name to find out more about them.
We can say:
Look on Dan’s blog.
You can find out what’s new in his life.

So why don’t you do it?
Well, many people asked me:
How can I start a conversation in English?
We want to talk to practice English, right?
Well, you can start a conversation by asking this question:
What’s new?
It’s a great question to start a conversation.
Now a conversation is when you are talking to someone.
You can have a conversation with your friends.
You can have conversations with your family.
When you meet someone new, maybe you want to start a conversation with them.
This is a great question to ask.
And it’s easy to remember.
What’s new with you?
Well, we want to find out more about what’s new at the mall.
But before we do that, let’s review our key word from this section.
Please say this phrase with me, OK?

Say it.

Luke will find out about the new school.
He doesn’t know much about it.
So he will learn more information about this new school.
Well friends, it’s time for us to find out what’s new at the mall.

What’s new with you?
Not too much.
I’m having a good day.
I’m glad about that.
That’s good to hear!

What’s new with you?
Well, I have a date tonight!
With a girl?
Yes, with a girl.
She’s a friend.
Well friends, we see this question ”What’s new with you?” in our conversation.
Jack uses this question to start a conversation with Tom.
What’s new with you?
Tom says:
Not too much.
But then he shares a little bit about his day,
a little bit about what is happening in his life.
So if someone asks you the question, ”What’s new?” or ”What’s new with you?”,
you can answer with ”Not too much.” if you don’t have a lot to say.
At the beginning of our conversation, Tom says:
Good to see you.
Good to see you.
Now this is a phrase that you can use when you first meet someone.
We usually say hi or hello.
If you want to show the person that you’re happy to see them, you can say:
Good to see you.
Well friends, it’s always good to see you here at The Mall.
Now what is new with Jack?
Well, Jack tells us that he has a date tonight.
He has a date.
Well friends, what is a date?
A date is a time that you plan to meet someone.
When you have a date, you plan to do something with someone.
For example, maybe you have a date to have lunch with a friend.
Maybe you have an date to meet someone and exercise.
You can have an date to go and see a movie.
Now you can also have a date with a boy or a girl.
We often have dates with someone when we want to get to know them.
That’s why Tom says:
A date?
With a girl?
Often when a boy and a girl have a date, they want to get to know each other.
Well, Jack has a date with a girl.
But he says that she’s a friend.
So maybe she’s not Jack’s girlfriend.
She’s just a friend.
We did find something in this conversation.

The question is:

Well, Jack has a date tonight.
And we want to review that key word.
It is the noun:

Well, Jack and Tom are still talking about Jack’s date.
At the beginning of the conversation, Tom asks:
Is she your girlfriend?
If a man or a boy is dating someone for a long time, that girl is their
girlfriend.
Now Jack doesn’t have a girlfriend.
He says they are just friends.
Now we say this when you don’t have a boyfriend or you don’t have a girlfriend,
but maybe you still go on a date with a boy or a girl or a man or a woman,
then you can just say we are just friends.
We’re not boyfriend or girlfriend.
Well, Tom is interested about this girl.
He says:
Maybe she’ll be your girlfriend after the date.
Now we know that Tom likes movies a lot, right?
Tom works at the movie theater.
He likes to watch movies.
So he says:
That happens in movies.
Well, Jack says:
Tom, life is not like the movies.
And friends, that is true.
Movies our fun to watch.
They are great stories.
But life is not always like the movies.
Sometimes you feel like you can learn about people or learn about a place from a
movie.
And that’s true.
But not everything you see in a movie is always true.
Well, I don’t think that Jack wants to keep talking about his date.
He says something to change the topic of the conversation.
So Jack asks Tom:

We again see this question:
What’s new?
So if you’re having a conversation but you want to change what you’re talking
about,
you can ask this question again:
What’s new at work or what’s new with your friends?
Well, it works.
They changed the topic of their conversation.
Tom starts talking about work.
He says:
There’s a lot new at work.
We’re very busy.
Well, we’re very busy here at the mall as well.
But we want to take a break and we’ll see you soon.
