(Music).
Hello, everyone.
And welcome to The Mall.
We have another great lesson for you today.
It is called Helping a Friend.
We also have something we want you to find.
Our FIND It question is:
What just happened to Tom?
What just happened to Tom?
You can find it.
Well, let’s go to the Jungle Cafe.
Hello.
Welcome to the Information Desk.
(Chinese).
OK.
Let’s go find out what Tom is doing at the Jungle Cafe.
Hi, Tom.
How are you?
I’m great.
Are you sure?
Be honest.
How do you really feel?
I feel... excellent!
That’s great.
Did something good happen?
Yes. I just got an e-mail from a good friend.
We went to high school together.
I lost her e-mail address.
Wow.
What does she say?
I don’t know yet.
Let me read the e-mail.
Hi, Tom and Pam.
Andrea!
Are you teaching today?
Yes, I am teaching today and...
Oh, can... can we teach with you?
That would be wonderful!
Excellent!
Yes, that is excellent.
Friends, that is one of our key words today.
excellent.
Now if something is excellent, that means it is very, very good, right?
That’s right.
And friends, I have excellent news.
My friend from high school just wrote me.
That is excellent.
That is excellent.
Well Tom, you said that you feel excellent.
Now this is a good phrase to know.
I feel excellent.
You can say:
I feel great.
I feel wonderful.
Or I feel happy.
Or I feel sad.
Or I feel tired.
Or I feel angry.
Well, excellent job, friends.
You gave some good examples.
Now Tom, why do you feel excellent again?
Well, I feel excellent because I got an excellent e-mail.
Well, I don’t know if it’s an excellent e-mail,
but my friend from high school wrote me.
OK. Your friend from high school.
And high school is a key word.
Now friends, when you’re in high school, you’re usually a teenager.
High school is a last school you go to before college or university.
Now Pam, did you like high school?
Yes, I really liked high school because I was always with my friends.
And we would play basketball after school.
And we would go to dances, exercise.
It was a lot of fun.
Yes, high school is a lot of fun.
I know that you have to learn a lot in high school,
but be sure to take time to relax and enjoy high school.
Now Tom, you got an e-mail from your friend in high school.
It’s great to keep in touch with friends from high school.
It is good to keep in touch.
It’s funny you should say that because I lost her e-mail address.
But somehow, she found my e-mail address.
My friend from high school got in touch with me.
Well, I’m glad that she found you, Tom.
And friends, we found something in this conversation.
Did you FIND IT?
Pam, can you help us find it?
Sure.
What just happened to Tom?
Well, the answer is... I found it.
Tom just got an e-mail from a good friend.
Excellent job.
Now friends, did you find it?
I’m sure you did.
Now let’s review our key words together.
Tom, can you start?
Sure.
The word is...
excellent.
excellent.
This food is excellent.
You should try it.
high school.
high school.
John is fifteen and Jim is sixteen.
They are both in high school.
Excellent job, everyone.
Now Tom, I think that we should let you read your e-mail.
Yes. I’m excited about this.
I hope it’s an excellent e-mail.
Hey Tom, I googled you and found your e-mail address.
What’s new?
I’m OK.
No, actually, I am not OK.
I quit my job and moved back home.
I felt homesick and confused about life.
In high school, I had goals and plans.
Now I don’t have any goals.
I also feel lonely.
My high school friends don’t live here now.
I miss you.
Hey, sorry about complaining.
Write back when you can.
Karla.
Well Tom, it sounds like Karla really needs a friend right now.
Yeah, I think she does really new a friend.
It’s not easy when you’re homesick.
That’s true.
In her e-mail, Karla says that she felt homesick.
Now friends, this is one of our key words from this e-mail.
Now when you are homesick, you are away from your home,
but you really miss your home or you want to be at home.
So we say that you are homesick.
Yeah, it’s not a very good feeling.
Some people actually feel very sick when they miss home.
And they feel really homesick.
But I don’t really feel homesick very often.
Well, that’s good, actually, Tom.
But sometimes we do feel homesick.
Pam, do you ever feel homesick?
Sometimes I feel homesick.
And what do you do when you feel homesick?
Well, when I feel homesick, I write in my notebook.
I write down my feelings and see them on paper, and it helps me get through it.
Oh, well, that’s a good idea.
When you are homesick, it’s a good idea to write how you feel.
That’s what Pam just said.
And if you’re homesick, it’s also good just to do something that is fun,
something that you enjoy.
Well, Karla also tells us that she feels lonely.
Now when you feel lonely, that means you feel like you are all alone,
like there’s no one around you,
no one who you can talk to.
And sometimes I do feel lonely.
Actually, even if there are a lot of other people around, I might feel lonely
because maybe on the inside,
I am sad and I feel like nobody cares.
Sometimes I feel lonely.
That’s true.
Well, when you do feel lonely, it’s a good idea to call a friend or e-mail a
friend and share how you feel.
Well, at the end of the e-mail, Karla says:
Hey, sorry about complaining.
I don’t think she was really complaining that much.
But this is a key word.
Now when you complain, that means you say things to talk about what is bad in
your life.
Well, I had a bad day at work.
First, I showed up late.
And my boss yelled at me.
So I went into the store, and there were these books all over the floor.
A customer had knocked them onto the ground and I had to pick them all up,
put them on the shelf.
Oh.
Pam, it... it sounds like you are complaining.
Now you don’t usually complain.
No. Pam doesn’t usually complain at all.
It’s not a good idea to complain a lot.
But I think that Pam was just giving it as an example of what it sounds like to
complain.
Well, thank you for that example, Pam.
Good job.
And when you do want to complain, try to think about the good things instead of
thinking about the bad things.
Well, a good thing that we can think about right now is a key word.
So why don’t we review the key words together?
Review the key words together, Andrea?
We do that every time.
Yeah, come on, Andrea.
Do we have to do this again?
Are you complaining?
No.
I didn’t think so.
So let us review our key words together.
No complaining, OK?
Here we go.
homesick.
homesick.
Bart feels homesick.
He misses his mom and dad.
And here’s the second key word:
lonely.
lonely.
Mandy is lonely.
She doesn’t have any friends here.
And the next one:
complain.
complain.
Don’t complain.
Be thankful for things.
That is true.
Don’t complain.
Be thankful for things.
Well friends, we are thankful that you joined us.
Now let’s let Tom and Pam continue their conversation.
Poor Karla.
She sounds sad.
Yeah.
What are you going to write to her?
I don’t know.
What should I write?
Well, Karla just shared her real feelings with you.
You could thank her for being honest.
That’s true.
Good.
What else?
Say, ”I’m your friend. I want to help.”.
OK. Good.
Well Pam, I think you just gave Tom some good advice.
You have some good words in your reply to Karla’s e-mail.
Yes, I have some good words so far.
Thankfully, Pam had a couple of good things to share.
That’s true.
Thank you for sharing those, Pam.
And share is a key word.
When you share something, that means you tell about it.
When you share about your family, you are talking about your family.
You can ask a friend:
Share about your weekend.
Tell me what you did on the weekend.
Or if you have a vacation and you come back from your vacation,
then you can share all about your vacation.
You can share the good times and you can share the bad times.
Hopefully, you had a lot of good times on your vacation.
Can you share those with me?
Or you can share a story, a funny story with someone if you want to make them
laugh.
That’s true.
It’s always fun to share things with friends.
Now it is a good idea to share the good things, the good news or things that
make you laugh.
But it’s also a good idea to share the bad things or the hard things.
It’s not always easy.
So I think that Karla did something good by sending you that e-mail.
It’s true.
It’s kind of strange, but she was a good friend from high school.
So I’m not surprised that she shared her feelings with me,
and that she got in touch with me so that she could share this.
It’s important to share things with other people.
Well, it’s time for us to share this key word with all of you.
Now it’s your turn to say it and repeat the sentence.
Now Pam, can you share this with us?
Sure.
The key word is...
share.
share.
Sue is going to share about her trip.
Let’s listen to her.
Well friends, thank you for listening with us.
We’ll see you soon.
