(Music).
Hello, friends.
And welcome to The Mall.
We’re so glad you joined us as we keep learning together.
My name is Andrea.
Today we continue our lesson:
Helping a Friend.
Yesterday we saw that Tom got an e-mail from a friend.
Today we’re continue talking about that.
We also have a question that we want you to answer.
The question is:
What could Tom do?
What could Tom do?
Now what can you do?
You can listen for this answer in today’s lesson.
So let’s begin with Conversation A.
Hello.
Welcome to the Information Desk.
(Chinese).
Well, seems like it’s time to visit our friends at the Jungle Cafe.
Hi, guys.
What are you doing?
Tom is writing an e-mail to an old friend.
Pam is helping me.
Why do you need help?
Well, my friend told me some things about her life and how she’s feeling.
I want to help her.
But Tom isn’t sure what to write.
I could help too.
Can I read the e-mail?
Sure.
Hmm. Now Tom isn’t sure what to write.
He isn’t sure,
so his friends are helping him.
Now when you aren’t sure about something, that means you don’t know what to do.
We can say:
Daphne isn’t sure about what to wear.
I am not sure if it’s raining outside.
Kevin isn’t sure if he can finish all of his homework.
When you’re not sure about something, you don’t know.
If you are sure about something, you know.
We can say:
Daphne is sure that she is going to wear a pink T-shirt tomorrow.
I’m sure that it is not raining.
Keven is sure that he can finish all of his homework.
And I am sure that we can learn something together from this conversation.
Emma comes into the conversation at the beginning and says:
What are you doing?
She wants to know what Pam and Tom are doing.
What are you doing?
This is always a good question to start a conversation,
to start talking to someone.
What are you doing?
Well, what are Tom and Pam doing?
They’re writing an e-mail to an old friend.
Well, Tom is writing an e-mail to his old friend.
His old friend.
Now yesterday we learned that this is a friend that Tom went to high school
with.
Now Tom is not very old,
so this friend should be the same age as Tom, right?
So why does he say he’s writing an old friend?
Well, here it does not mean the person’s age.
When we think of someone as being old, we think of someone who has lived for
many years.
An old friend is someone that you have known for a long time.
I have many old friends at home in Canada.
Old friends are friends that you know for a long time.
Do you have any old friends?
Friends that have known you for a long time?
It’s good to remember that old friends are not old in years.
They’re old in how long that you know them.
And old friends are good friends.
I hope that Tom can write a good e-mail to his friend.
He can do it.
We know that Karla is not feeling very well.
Yesterday we learned that Karla is homestick.
She’s confused and feels lonely.
So Tom is going to be a good friend to his old friend Karla.
Well, let’s keep listening as we learn more.
Well, do you want my opinion?
Of course.
Tell Karla that she’s not complaining.
She poured her heart out to you.
You could thank her for trusting you.
Oh. OK. I’ll write that.
I just wish she wasn’t feeling sad.
Well, Karla doesn’t have to feel sad.
But she can’t help it.
She can’t change her feelings.
Maybe she can.
Welcome back.
Now let’s look at this conversation together.
In my opinion, there is a lot to learn.
opion.
That is one of our key words,
so let’s talk about it together.
What is your opinion?
Your opinion is how you feel about something.
When you share your opinion or express your opinion, you tell someone how you
feel about it.
What is your opinion?
Do you like winter or summer?
When you share your answer, you’re sharing your opinion.
Well, Emma shares her opinion.
And her answer when she shares her opinion is the answer to today’s Find It
question.
Do you remember the question?
The question is:
What could Tom do?
What could Tom do?
Well, Tom could thank Karla for trusting him.
That is also Emma’s opinion.
It’s true Emma poured out her heart to Tom.
Now when you pour out your heart to someone,
that means you share your real feelings with them.
It’s a neat picture, these words.
It’s like your feelings are in your heart.
And when you pour them out, you share everything that is in your heart with
someone.
Do you often pour out your heart?
When you pour out your heart, you share exactly how you feel.
Now friends, it’s not always easy to pour out your heart.
And we usually just pour out our heart to someone that we really trust.
So I think that Emma has a good opinion.
Tom can thank Karla for trusting him.
When you trust someone, you believe in them.
You know that they will do what you ask them to do.
You can trust them.
Well, we also see another phrase that’s good to learn in this conversation.
can’t help.
But she can’t help it.
That’s what Pam says.
Now when you can’t help something, there’s nothing you can do about it.
Kevin is sad today.
But he can’t help it.
There’s nothing he can do to feel happy again.
Or at least that’s how he feels.
We can say:
Simon can’t help being tired today.
He slept a lot last night.
He just can’t help being tired.
So we use this phrase when we just don’t know why we feel a certain way or what
we can do to help.
All right, friends.
In my opinion, I think we should learn some more.
What do you think?
Do you have the same opinion?
Well, let’s review this key word.
opinion.
opinion.
What’s your opinion?
Tell me what you think.
Well, my opinion is that we should keep learning.
Let’s listen to Conversation C.
Really?
Yes. Sometimes you start to feel the way you act.
Huh?
Here’s an example.
I don’t always like my job.
Sometimes I feel bored.
You never seem bored.
I know.
I act like I’m having fun.
I smile at people,
and then I start feeling happy.
Really?
Wow. I’ll have to try that!
In my opinion, Emma has a great idea.
What do you think?
She says that if you act happy, you will start to be happy.
Well, that’s an example of using her advice.
If you act excited, you will be excited.
If you act like you’re having fun, you’ll start having fun.
So this verb act talks about what you do.
When you act happy, you can smile and laugh.
When you act sad, you can frown and look down.
How you act is how other people see you.
Maybe a child will act very silly and do funny things.
Students can act like they are listening.
But I also hope that you are really listening.
I think this advice is great.
Emma gives an example.
She says that she doesn’t always like her job.
She says sometimes she feels bored.
I think this is true.
Sometimes we feel bored at our job or bored at school.
But let’s look at this word:
bored.
When you are bored, that means you are not interested in something.
When you’re bored, you just don’t really want to do anything or you’re not sure
what to do.
A person can be bored.
You can say:
I am bored.
But friends, you can not say I am boring.
That is not right.
I am bored.
But other things can be boring.
You can say:
This book is boring.
I don’t want to read it anymore.
I don’t want to watch more TV.
It’s boring.
But if you’re talking about a person, you cannot say boring.
A person is bored.
All right.
You got it.
Good.
We have another key word to look at here.
It is...
seem.
Tom says you never seem bored.
That means Emma never looks like she is bored.
How you seem is how someone sees you.
If someone is smiling, well, then they seem happy.
If someone is dancing, they seem like they are having fun.
You seem to people.
When you look outside and you see sunshine,
well, then it seems like a beautiful day.
When you go outside.
You’ll know for sure.
Well, it is time for us to review.
So here we go.
The first key word is...
act.
act.
When you open the present from Grandma, please act like you like it.
The next one is...
bored.
You say it.
bored.
I’m bored.
There is nothing to do here.
Well, that’s not true.
I’m not bored. This is exciting.
The next one is...
seem.
The dog seems hungry.
Should we feed it?
Well friends, it seems like it is time for us to take a break.
We’ll be right back.
