(Music).
Hi, everyone.
And welcome to The Mall.
My name is Andrea.
It’s great to have you back as we keep learning how to talk about the weather in
English.
Now many people love talking about weather.
I hope that you enjoy learning how to talk about the weather in English.
The title of today’s lesson is A Spring Storm.
Now I have something that I would like you to find.
Our FIND IT question today is:
What does Jack need?
What does Jack need?
Well friends, we need to go to the Information Desk.
Christina is there ready to share some information.
Let’s go.
(Chinese).
sell.
We sell many things at the mall.
OK, let’s see what our friends are doing at the Jungle Cafe.
Hi, Jack.
You look wet.
I am wet.
Why?
Is it raining?
Yes. It’s raining really hard.
Oh, no!
Oh, yes.
And I forgot my umbrella.
But it’s not going to rain until tomorrow!
I checked the weather forecast.
Well, the forecast is wrong.
It is raining now.
This is terrible!
Jack comes into the Jungle Cafe and he is wet.
Now why is Jack wet?
Well, it’s raining.
Jack says it’s raining really hard outside.
And that is why he is wet.
It’s raining outside.
Well, rain, the verb is a key word.
Let’s talk about it.
When it rains outside, that means water is falling from the sky.
If you look outside and you see a lot of water falling from the sky, you can say
it is raining.
Do you like it when it rains?
Some people like it when it rains.
They like to watch the rain or even walk in the rain outside.
But remember if it’s raining, you might get wet unless you have an umbrella.
Umbrella is also a key word from this section.
Let’s say this word together.
umbrella.
Watch the Ls in there.
umbrella.
umbrella.
Now when you go outside in the rain, it is a good idea to take an umbrella.
An umbrella can help you stay dry in the rain.
If you don’t have an umbrella, you might get wet.
You hold the umbrella above your head.
Then the rain falls on the umbrella and not on your head.
So you can use an umbrella when it rains.
But some people also use an umbrella if the sun is shining very bright.
In the summer, you might walk with an umbrella so that the sun does not shine
right on you.
If you go to the beach, you’ll see people sitting with umbrellas.
It helps them not be so hot.
So there are different ways that we can use an umbrella.
Most people do use an umbrella when it rains outside.
Well friends, for now let us review our key words together.
The first one is the verb:
rain.
rain.
The children can’t play outside right now because it’s raining.
It’s raining.
Now friends, let’s talk about this a little bit more.
When it rains outside, there is a lot of rain.
R-A-I-N.
That is the noun.
Now we can also use the word ”rainy,” R-A-I-N-Y, to talk about a day that has a
lot of rain.
We’ve learned some other words like it’s sunny; it’s cloudy.
You can also say it’s rainy when it is raining.
And if it is raining, make sure you have your umbrella.
Umbrella is another key word to review.
umbrella.
umbrella.
Take your umbrella with you.
It’s going to rain later.
Well, we’re going to go back to the Jungle Cafe for Conversation B.
Why does this bother you so much?
You’re not wet.
I want to plant some flowers after work.
But if it’s raining, then I can’t do it.
Well, maybe it will stop raining soon.
Sometimes these storms come quickly and leave quickly.
That’s true.
Hey, do you need a towel?
Sure.
That would be great.
I am really wet.
Why does the rain bother Emma or why did she say this is terrible when she
learned it was raining outside?
Well, Emma tells us that she wants to plant some flowers after work.
But if it’s raining outside, she can’t plant the flowers.
Well, Jack tries to help her.
He says:
Sometimes these storms come quickly and leave quickly.
And that’s true.
Sometimes it’s raining one minute and then it’s sunny again the next minute, and
then it’s cloudy.
The weather does change quickly.
But here Jack uses a new word.
He says:
Sometimes these storms come quickly and leave quickly.
Storm is a key word.
When there is a storm outside, that means it’s usually bad weather.
You can have a rainstorm.
That means there is lots of rain falling from the sky.
Often there is also wind blowing.
It is a storm.
Now friends, it’s usually not very nice to be outside in a storm,
especially if you don’t have an umbrella or if you don’t have a way to stay dry.
Now we’ve talked about a rainstorm.
There’s also some other kinds of storms that we’ll look at as our lesson
continues.
In our conversation, Emma says:
Hey, do you need a towel?
She asks Jack if he needs a towel.
Well, Jack is wet, so the towel might help him.
And I want to help you learn this key word:
towel.
When something is wet, a towel can help you make it dry.
After you wash your hands, well, your hands are wet.
And if you want your hands to be dry, you could use a towel to dry your hands.
After you shower, you need a towel.
When you shower, your body is wet.
Before you put your clothes on, you want to dry your body.
So you might use a towel.
Well, we also found something else in this conversation.
We found two key words.
And we found the answer to a special question.
Did you find it?
The question is:
What does Jack need?
What does Jack need?
He needs a towel.
And friends, we need to review these key words together.
The first one is...
storm.
storm.
This storm is terrible.
It’s really raining hard.
The next key word is...
towel.
towel.
We used a towel to dry the baby after his bath.
Well done.
Let us continue with Conversation C.
Here’s a towel.
Thanks.
Where did you get the umbrella?
Didn’t you forget yours?
Yes.
I just bought this one.
The mall sells umbrellas when it is raining.
Oh yeah.
I often buy one of those.
Me too.
I never remember to bring one to work.
I have ten of these at home.
Oh! I need to buy an umbrella too.
I didn’t bring one today either!
Emma brings Jack a towel.
Then she sees that Jack has an umbrella, so she asks:
Where did you get the umbrella?
Didn’t you forget yours?
Well, yes, Jack did forget his umbrella.
But he bought one.
He says:
The mall sells umbrellas when it is raining.
And it’s true.
Most probably sell a lot of umbrellas when it is raining.
Well friends, here we see the verb sell and this is a key word in this
conversation.
If a store sells something, that means that you can buy it.
A grocery store sells food.
You can go to the grocery store to buy fruits and vegetables and other kinds of
food.
If you go to a movie theater, if you go see Tom at the movie theater,
he can sell you a movie ticket.
You must buy the movie ticket.
You must pay money for it.
Now friends, the verb is sell.
During rainy days, the mall sells many umbrellas.
So the verb is sell.
But when we are talking about it in the past, it changes.
The mall sells umbrellas.
But yesterday the mall sold umbrellas.
It changes quite a bit from sell to sold.
S-O-L-D.
Karen’s store sells many things in the summer.
Karen’s store sold many things in the summer.
So watch that if you are speaking in the present tense or if you use the past.
Well, if I forget an umbrella on a rainy day, it’s true I would also go and buy
one.
Well, Tom does the same thing... er, Jack does the same thing.
He says:
I never remember to bring an umbrella to work.
I never remember.
That’s a way of saying I always forget.
I never remember to bring a lunch to work.
I always forget my lunch,
so then I go to a restaurant.
Simon never remembers his keys.
Well, another way we can say it is that Simon always forgets his keys.
Great job.
Well friends, please take time to review this conversation.
Well, review all of the conversations from our lesson today.
We learned many words to talk about the weather.
When it rains outside, bring an umbrella.
When it’s a rainy day, don’t forget your umbrella.
Well friends, let’s keep learning more.
But for now, it’s time to take a break.
