(Music).
Hi, everyone. And welcome to The Mall.
Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Andrea.
And we are continuing to learn how to talk about the weather.
Yesterday we found out that there is a storm happening outside the mall.
And today, we’ll continue to talk about that.
I have something that I would like you to find.
Can you find it?
The question is:
What does Jack like?
I’ll say it again.
What does Jack like?
So listen carefully to our conversations to find this answer.
I know that you can do it.
Well, I know that all of you like to learn more,
so let’s go to the Information Desk.
Christina is right there waiting for you.
Hello. Welcome to the Information Desk.
(Chinese).
The storm is really getting bad out there.
Is it windy?
Yes! The wind is terrible!
It took my umbrella right out of my hands.
Oh. I guess I won’t go and buy a new umbrella yet.
Here’s a towel for you, Amy.
Thank you.
I wanted to walk home,
but I can’t do that in this weather.
Amy comes into the Jungle Cafe.
And she says:
The storm is getting bad out there.
The storm is getting bad out there.
Now here she uses ”out there”.
It’s another way to say ”outside”.
You can say the weather is beautiful out there or the weather is beautiful
outside.
Out there and outside, here they mean the same thing.
Well, the storm continues out there.
The storm continues outside.
And we have a couple key words that can help us talk about the weather.
Let’s look at the word:
wind.
Now wind is air that moves.
Sometimes when you’re outside, there is a lot of wind,
especially if you are in a storm.
Amy tells us that the wind is terrible.
The wind out there is terrible.
The wind outside is terrible.
Now how do we know it is terrible?
Well, she says that the wind took her umbrella right out of her hands.
Wow.
That must be very strong wind.
If the wind is very powerful, we can say the wind is strong.
If the wind is not strong, we can just say that there is a light wind outside.
Now if there is a lot of wind outside, what other word can we use to talk about
that?
Well, we can use another key word from this conversation.
windy.
windy.
You see the word ”wind” in that key word.
W-I-N-D, wind, plus a ”y”.
You use this word to talk about a day that has a lot of wind.
It is very windy during a storm.
So be careful.
Or you can say there is a lot of wind outside.
So wind is the noun and windy is the adjective.
Well done.
Friends, it is time for us to review these key words together,
so please repeat them after me.
windy.
windy.
I’d like to wear a hat on a windy day to keep my hair out of my eyes.
The next key word is...
wind.
wind.
The wind is blowing hard today.
I can’t hear what you’re saying.
Well, let’s keep listening to what our friends are saying in Conversation B.
You can wait here, and I can take you home after work.
Thank you.
My car is in the parking garage,
so we won’t have to go outside at all.
That’s wonderful!
Uh, can I ride with you too?
Sure.
I don’t want to get wet again.
You know, Jack, when I was outside, I felt scared.
Really?
Are you scared of storms?
Are you scared of storms?
Well, Amy tells us that when she was outside, she felt scared.
She felt scared or we can say she was scared.
Well friends, scared is a key word in this conversation.
When you are scared, you are afraid of something.
Amy said that she felt scared.
We could also say that she was afraid of the storm.
Now let’s use this key word with some example sentences.
We can say:
Sue is scared of snakes.
She is afraid of snakes.
She does not like snakes.
What are you scared of?
Clinton is scared of tall buildings.
That means he is afraid of tall buildings.
Maybe he is afraid to be up high.
He is scared or he feels scared when he is in a tall building.
Well, Amy doesn’t have to feel scared because Emma is going to help her.
Emma says that Amy can wait at the Jungle Cafe.
Her car is in the parking garage,
so she doesn’t have to go outside again.
Well friends, here we see the parking garage.
Now this is another important part of the mall.
Some people use a car when they drive to the mall.
Where do you keep your car when you want to go inside?
Well, maybe you put your car in the parking garage.
It’s a place where you can keep your car when you go inside the mall.
It’s important to learn about different places at the mall.
Last week we talked about the food court.
What do you do at the food court?
Well, that’s where you can choose a restaurant to eat at.
We also talked about different shops and different stores at the mall.
And another place at the mall is the parking garage.
Now one thing that is important when you go into a parking garage is to remember
where you parked your car.
Mall parking garages are often very, very big,
so you might have to walk around a long time to find your car if you don’t
remember where you parked it.
Well, I am glad that Emma parked her car or has her car in the parking garage.
That will help her and her friends during the storm.
And now let’s review our key word:
scared.
scared.
The little girl is scared of the big dog.
Well, don’t be scared, friends.
There is more to learn.
Let’s continue with Conversation C.
Not usually.
But this time, the thunder was so loud,
and the lightning was so close!
Then you said the wind took your umbrella, right?
Right!
I just wanted to come inside and stay inside.
I know what you mean.
I like watching storms but being in them is not fun.
It’s nice to be with friends too.
Now I don’t feel scared at all.
Well, I can understand why Amy was scared of this storm.
There was a lot of wind.
The wind took her umbrella right out of her hands.
And Amy also tells us that the thunder was so loud.
I don’t like thunder.
Actually, I’m also scared of thunder.
Now what is thunder?
Well friends, thunder is a key word.
Thunder is very loud.
When there is a storm outside, especially a rainstorm, you might hear thunder.
It’s a very loud sound.
thunder.
You know, I also think that when we say this word in English, we say it a little
louder.
We usually don’t say the thunder is bad.
We say the thunder is bad.
So we can even understand the meaning a little bit by how we say this word:
thunder.
Well, if you hear thunder, you might also see a bright light in the sky,
and that is called lightning.
Lightning is also a key word in this section.
Now during a storm, you might hear thunder and see lightning.
Lightning does not make any noise.
Well, it usually doesn’t make a sound,
but it is a bright light that you will see in the sky.
Usually you see lightning first and then you might hear thunder.
Well friends,
if there is thunder and lightning during a storm, we call that kind of storm a
thunderstorm.
A thunderstorm has thunder and lightning and usually a lot of rain and a lot of
wind.
So do you like thunderstorms or are you scared of thunderstorms?
We also found something in this conversation.
The answer to our FIND IT question.
What does Jack like?
What does Jack like?
Well, Jack tells us that he likes watching storms.
But being in storms is not fun.
So we learned that Jack likes watching storms,
but he doesn’t like being out there or being outside in a storm.
Well, I hope that you like reviewing our key words.
It’s time to do that together now.
The first one is...
thunder.
I hear some thunder.
A storm is coming.
The next one is...
lightning.
lightning.
The lightning quickly lights up the night sky.
Well, we’ve talked a lot about storms.
I think it’s time for us to take a break and then we will review.
So enjoy your break.
